I know $61,273.13 is probably $61,273.12 more than Chad Barrett is actually worth, but I still would have a hard time putting him in the "high rollers" category.

I'd probably add Dane Richards ($33k) to the "deals" list.

which number goes against the cap? base or guaranteed?
someone said guaranteed but then looking at some of these teams, that would blow the cap number by a lot. Isn't the base the cap number, and then the guaranteed "extra" is the allocation added money?

I guess you can add Laurent Robert to the 'high rollers' category.

How can Schellotto be making 425K but not be a DP? MLS continues to confuse me.

No wonder why MLS is second rate, how do they expect to field quality teams when most of the players make less than construction workers.

The list is incomplete. Half of San Jose, Trujillo and Lopez are missing from Kansas City. I'm sure there are others.

Re: 2008 MLS salary info out

Some that jump out to me:

    McTavish: $33,000.
    Ashe: $33,000.
Moffat: only $17,000?! The guy who scores the first goal of the MLS season?!
    Boswell: $33,000.
    Nyassi: $17,000.
    Galindo: only $80,000.
    Richards: $33,000.
    Cristman: $33,000.
    Quaranta: $35,000.
Guzan: $104,000. The best goalkeeper prospect in the league.
    Khano Smith: $46,000.
    Holden: $33,000.

I know the MLS has done a great job of being probably the most cost-efficient league in the world. But at some point, if the league wants to continue to keep some of these great prospects and bring better players in, THEY HAVE TO RAISE THE SALARY CAP.

Re: 2008 MLS salary info out

    Also of note:

Thanks to the San Jose Earthquakes, this is the first time in four years the Revolution do NOT have the lowest payroll in the league.

According to the spreadsheet, the Revs currently (...without Chase Hilgenbrinck) have slightly higher payrolls than Kansas City (...sans Claudio Lopez), Columbus (...without Padulla and So), and Chivas USA (...without Claudio Suarez).

So, congratulations to the Revs' front office for yet another first-class effort on the transfer market this winter. Baby steps. This year, 2nd-lowest payroll in the league, maybe next year we crack the Top 10?

Re: 2008 MLS salary info out

What makes you think that raising the salary cap will affect what the players earning the minimum (33k) or on dev contracts (12.9k and 17.7k) make?

Keep in mind they only work for 7 months of the year. Not a bad gig for $33k.

Re: 2008 MLS salary info out

Actually it is a bad gig. A player that is very lucky has 12 years of professional soccer to play, and could get a career-inding injury at any time. During that time they are foregoing advancement in another career. While a player may be able to work in the off-season, they can't really establish themself in a career. Making 33k is a bad gig, and 17k is just absurd. And don't tell me about appearance bonuses, etc. Moffatt or Nyassi should not be trying to live on that.

Why does an advanced skill make them immune from struggling financially?

I love that people rarely say "no one should ever have that wage." It's almost always focused on the fact their athletes.

And they do raise the cap. If you think they should raise it more, perhaps that's what you should complain about. The cap goes up almost every year.
