You guys... For the last time! :D

Iran vs. Iraq has never been a football rivalry. Perhaps a rivalry between the two will materialize in the future, but such a relationship does not currently exist...

    1. Iran vs. S.Korea (always a competitive, exciting match)

    2. Iran vs. KSA (the teams have seldom met recently, but the powerhouse rivalry remains)

    3. Iran vs. Bahrain (anyone care to start a fight every 2 mins?)

This is a good football rivalry developing.

Australia's traditional rival from Asia has been Sth Korea - we have met them plenty of times in the past for WC quals in the days before Oceania when we were both in the "Rest of the World" group that got a token rep at the cup.

Recently however it has been Japan that has been more of a rival. The J-League is at least known here, although we are getting to know the others now.

There will always be a rivalry with Iran due to '97. I travelled to Iran in '99 and the only thing the border gaurd said to me as I crossed in from Turkey was "Melbourne 2-2 Azizi";)

    Australia v Everyone

Seeing as Australia are the newbies to Asia, just about every Asian footballing country wants to, in one degree or another, give a bashing to Australia to show us that this is their territory so to speak.

i wouldnt say thailand vs singapore.

singapore vs malaysia would be apt.

history backdating to the malaysia cup days. where 'singapore' used to play as a club team in malaysia's own league.

nobody in singapore likes malaysia. and vice versa.

i don't think korea-japan rivalry is what it used to be. there is no passion for it in the korean side.

i also find the korea-iran controversy more entertaining.

Though Korea won 2008 Far East Football Championship, do you still think Japan is stronger than S. Korea?
In Asian Cup 2007, Korea has beaten Japan with 10 field Korean players.
And Korea is ahead of Japan in head to head record.

I didn't watch the Far East Championship, but I watched Asian Cup 2007, which is the tournament I based my comment on.

Do nations generally play with their first teams in the Far East Championship?

I was not impressed with S.Korea during the Asian Cup, as they really seemed to lack the ability to score. I realize that S.Korea beat Japan for 3rd place honors and that they have a superior head-to-head record, but after examining each team's results against other opposition, I find Japan to be the stronger side, overall.

    Just my opinion.

Korea Republic-Korea DPR used to be a fierce rivalry back in the 1980s due to political reason.

Anti-communism in the South in the day reached its peak so if you lose to the North on any given day, you would be treated as a criminal by the general public.

What about Korea vs. China? It's a strange little rivalry that still seems like a big deal...despite the fact China hasn't beaten Korea in the 30 last matches

if kazakhstan was still in Asia, I would say Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

For me it's always interesting to watch mathces between Japan and Korea.

I remember that playing Saudi was always a HUGE deal for Kuwait. Not anymore though, since they are hardly in the same league. In the 80s, it was a different story.
