http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sports/x254749052 The former Noble & Greenough School star midfielder told the Daily News yesterday that his plan, after fully healing from a leg injury that cost him the end of his final Blue Devils season, will be to head to Europe and sign a professional contract overseas Former Dukie, Region I, sometime U18 and sometime U20 Youth Nat drafted by the Revs will be trying his luck overseas. He holds a Portuguese passport. Any news regarding his activities, please post. Duke bio: http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.d...33&DB_OEM_ID=4200&ATCLID=158578&Q_SEASON=2007
I can't blame him for giving it a shot overseas, especially given his passport situation and age. Still, I'd like to see him play for the Revs for a couple of seasons in his early career. I doubt he's going get immediate first team action if he goes to any halfway decent team anyway. The Revs could really bring him along quickly in a successful environment and their reputation with scouting Euro teams is growing lately. His presence in NE could also free up Shalrie Joseph to go on his long over due Euro adventure, and most importantly, the fans would eat him up as a local success. Maybe he can do it as a loanee?
Revs need to invest more in Portuguese/Brazilian talent anyway. Have yet to understand why they haven't made any player moves to try and entice the Portuguese community there. I haven't read anything about it at least. If he was injured at the end of his season I doubt he was offerred much in the way of money by MLS. It just seems to me that MLS are starting to chase off good young talent by keeping the bottom end of their pay scale so low.
If Mike has a chance to play overseas, he should go. I don't imagine him getting too much playing time in the MLS, anyway.
that's a pretty optimistic assessment of MV's draft position after a couple injury-plagued seasons, but no doubt he'd be see playing time with any MLS team with the possible exception of Houston.
We train together a couple times a week here in Raleigh with the Carolina Railhawks and local UNC/DUKE/NCSU players in preparation for the upcoming USL season. I will check with him Friday at training and see what he is thinking about doing in the near future. Check back in then DMN.
He wasnt at training, perhaps he will be next Monday. Check back in then. Word on the street in Raleigh NC **the carolina railhawks own Dan Antoniuks contract** is that he has either signed in sweden or is currently on trial with a MLS club *revolution were mentioned.
bump...what happened to Videira? Any chance he returns to MLS? haven't heard about any trials whatsoever.
From Saturday: Midfielder Michael Videira of Milford, the Revolution’s second-round pick (18th overall), remains unsigned. The former Duke standout is reportedly looking to play overseas once he recovers from a torn quadriceps muscle. Link: http://www.telegram.com/article/20080330/NEWS/803300735/1009/SPORTS
I would like to see him at least try to get something overseas. We all have seen what can happen when a player signs with MLS then a few years later wants to leave to Europe and can't because MLS won't let them leave. I think he should give it a shot but if it doesn't work out then join the revs.
Just want to point out that this is a fantasy. MLS occasionally rejects bids it thinks are too low. There is no evidence that MLS does this any more than clubs elsewhere in the world.
Updated from the Revs board. From the Cape Cod Times: http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080416/SPORTS/80415018
Thanks. The most relevant portion, perhaps: Videira, 22, first trialed with Bundesliga bottom-dweller 1. FC Nürnberg. He said the club’s struggles to avoid relegation kept him from opening too many eyes. “I wasn’t there too long,” he said. “It was a really tough time for them.” Videira, who holds a Portuguese passport, said he got a longer look with Go Ahead Eagles of Holland’s Eerste Divisie. “They wanted me to stay longer,” he said. “At that point, it was kind of a tough situation. It was so busy and they were resting guys, so there wasn’t much training going on.” The former Duke star said he has fully recovered from the torn quadriceps muscle that cost him part of the 2007 collegiate season. He’s capable of playing fully, and is mulling heading back to North Carolina to train at Duke until he takes another shot at Europe.
Jeez, he's already dropping down to the Netherlands' second level for a trial? Don't most people of Videira's pedigree usually wait until the 2nd or 3rd month of no contract before doing that? Maybe Nybergsund is interested... Clearly, he should sign with the Revs.
He needs to get his a$$ to Foxboro, where he'd be a future franchise player. 2nd division of 2/3rd tier Euro leagues is not a good look at all for a player of his hype/rep.
You know if he was drafted by any other MLS team, this would make some sense. But to be drafted by the Rev's, who have a history of making college draft picks good MLS players, and not even trying it out is pretty stupid IMO.
If the Revs give him a 2-year $50-$70K/Y contract, I'd advise him to take it. But if they don't, I'd rather go to Norway's 2nd (yes, it is 4th tier Euro soccer) and hopefully start right away much like Joe Lapira.
Is it safe to assume Mike was the American training with Burnley during their stop in NC? Mike certainly has the talent and has the drive from the handful of his games I seen. He could easily see him getting minutes right now in MLS probably as a supersub eventually eorking his way into the line-up. If he impresses at Wolves, which I hope he does, it could be a good start to his career. Even though listening to Mick McCarthy's voice makes my head spin. Don't ask cause I don't know why!
