Michael Owen, until he refinds his goalscoring he doesnt warrant a place imo.

Players should be called up on merit. But Beckham has been great for England. A major reason we have made the last two tournaments. Forget that goal against Greece? If everyone hd played to that standard we would have got far further. He dragged us through game after game at one point. Couldnt do much more. He's given the opportunity to get his 100th cap at the twilight of his career and we treat him like this?! People were begging for him to be back in the side for the Croatia, Russia, Israel games. So we use him when we want him and offer him nothing back?! Thats English mentality all over. Shit, its English ideology. The reason this country is a s1ht hole, not just in footballing terms. But the reason people who live arent proud of the place. Would it have hurt to give him a game? Even if its his last? England are out. We're now truly a second tier team. Not good enough. We cant even compare ourselves to Croatia. Its not all about Beckham, but why give a sh1t about the team? Its not me or us that have anything to prove. Its down to the players now. The whole organisation that is English football needs to prove a point to the fans. Show they care. This reaks of the same old sh1t. We dont qualify for a major tournament, sack the manager, bring in a new one and hope that once again fills the fans with hope. Whereas in reality, it just gives us false hope. I couldnt care about the result. We're not going to the Euro's. Playing Beckham would at least have given the crowd something to be proud about. He's been world class throughout his career. He's achieved, unlike most the squad. I agree he's done, he wont play a big part in the England and shouldnt while in MLS. However you look at it, he's been treated badly. So what do we gain out the game? Try out a new side. Would have been affected by Beckham. Check out Capello's new style of play. Wouldnt have beenb affected by Beckham. Lift some of the gloom of not qualifying by getting a win. Wouldnt have been affected by Beckham. Including Beckham could only have had a positive impact. Would have taken the light off the other new players in the squad, and made them more relaxed. Would they resent? Probably not, they, like us, would have realised what its all about.

******** England mate. Im not going to forget November. No matter what result they get on 6th, we're out, they're to blame. I hope Engand do well, hope the teams grows into something string that can win, but this friendly - pointless and embarrasing.

Also, as for merit. Beckham has proved time and again that he merits the honor of getting his 100 th cap. Now, aside from playing a few new players, which I remeber Eriksson being blasted for constantly in his friendlies, the game has no importance. We're a poor side, but could have shown a bit of class, instead of Capello making the same point as McClaren, dropping Beckham to show he has balls, well Ive seen this before, and it got us to ... where was it ... watching the Euro's at home. Good move cvnt.

Totally disagree, Beckham has been a great servant for England I aknowledge that. However the Team doesnt not revolve around the Beckham circus, any England team should be about England not player Xs 100th Cap.

If Beckham was to be in the squad, Cappello would have to drop SWP or Bentley or Young. All players imo who are to feature heavily in the next campaign. Its time to rebuild and forget about our past which wasnt that great.

Thanks for the memories David but you will have to wait till the Summer for that 100th Cap, you cant expect to take a premier leagues players place in the squad when you havent played for 4 months and im sure Beckham knows this himself as he has never believed in his own hype unlike many of our squad.

But why would dropping one of those players have been such a problem? What does this friendly represent?! Its embarrasing. Wont prove a lot either. Why get a team embedded and used to each other for the summer and then play Becks. Get his 100th out of the way. Then move on. Same thing as Shearer hanging over Newcastle. Beckham will have the same impact on the England team. I dont think he's good enough to play for us. But I dont think much of any of the players at the minute either. I just cant understand the reasoning. So he hasnt played for 4 month? We're a second rate team anyway. The Swiss are our peers, we're no better than them. We're crap, so why would playing Beckham have been a problem. This new start bullsh1t is just that, hype. Rubbish. Neither SWP, Bentley or Young are better anyway, just younger, and not Beckham, which seems to be the main point.

Plus, in terms of international football, Brazil are known for flair and skill - something we lack -, Italy for their great strength and organisation - um,unlike us-, France for their speed and skill and quality - again, unlike us - and what are England known for? None of the above as we dont have the technical ability. We're known for passion, bravery and loyalty. In dropping Beckham we have shown none. I just think its a shame, and this friendly a money making sham...

Agreed. Beckham is paying the price of having joined MLS. You really can't expect Capello to select players who aren't match fit and I'm happy that he's showing no sentiment in regard to Beckham's 100th cap. He's been training at Arsenal, but really that's not a substitute for playing matches. If and when he gets match fit is the time to consider him for selection. Also good to see others not playing regularly - Defoe, Robinson etc - don't warrant a place either. Otoh, I think Robert Green is extremely unlucky not to have got selected.

No you are right the players who will replace Beckham arent better at the minute, but they could be in 12 months time. Do you really think Cappello will let Beckham hang over his team? I dont.

Beckham will get a little 20 minute cameo in one of the Summers friendlys and that will be it. Beckham knows he wont start a competitive game for England and again. After his cameo he will do the decent thing and retire from International football so he doesnt endure the shame in being dropped from another squad.

The friendly isnt a waste of time either. We have World Cup qualifiers this winter and our manager has yet to meet the players. Do you not think he should try and spend as much time as possible with these players so that he can enter the qualifers with his best possible 11.

It represents Capello's first England squad and his chance to set out what he expects from the players - no free rides and no sentimentality. In not compromising this for Beckham he has established what he expects from his players and shown that the team is the most important element, not an individual milestone for one player.

If Beckham was on 98 caps then there would be no complaints at his omission and he will get his 100 caps once he is playing for his club again.

Really. And how would Beckhams inclusion have harmed that? No free rides, no sentimentality? Didnt the previous manager do the exact same thing? With the same player. In the same game. At the sametime of his career as manager. To prove the same point. Doesnt this just show we have not moved on in the manner we would have wanted? Established what he expects? What do you expect. The cvnts are useless. Hapless andunable to adopt to different styles of play. On quick cameo and then goodbye to the Beckham hysteria would have put it all to bed. Look at the papers in the morning and see if Im wrong. The team selection wont be the main headline, Beckham will. Then wait until we host a team heading to the Euro's in our next friendly, and the papers will be saying the same thing. Its going to become a cloud over the side. All of this new era bullsh1t has been over and over again. Beckham is an England legend, the players in the side at this time are not. Extremely far from it. Probably wont become anything either.

The friendly is not important. The result wont matter. The players will not be hindered or progressed by it. Their development in the side wont be harmed, and if it is they harmed by this, they shouldnt be in the England team at all. And we'll be calling for Beckham come the World Cup Quals anyway. However, play Beckham, get him his 100th, and the game means something.

People always complain about footballers having an obligation to behave in a wy youngsters can aspire to. To be model people we can look up to. Barton is villained for being a thug. People hate Beckhams lifestyle. The money is attcked incessantly as being undeserved. All this makes the young of this country 'bad' and 'anti social' because they dont have any good role models. So is it a good thing the nationl coach shows no sentimentaility? Shows that feelings count for nothing. That achievements mean sh1t. That your hard work in the past will not even be honoured with a cameo appearance? Dont club sides have testimonials for such occasions? England cant have a testimonial, so Beckham, the best player we've had for the last 10 years should be given the cap.

Hey, our yobbish youth culture will continue if not anway ...

Their are better players for England who didnt win 100 caps stop riding him. Big deal if he doesnt win 100 caps.

There's a big difference between the two omissions, imo. McClaren left him out when he was fit and had the expectation that he'd be playing regularly for Real. This is what he said:

Capello isn't considering Beckham because the guy hasn't played a single game at 100% match fitness in the last 7 months. Similarly, he hasn't selected other players who are not playing such as Defoe and Robinson.

Because it would show that the accomplishments of an individual would be more important than the creation of a good team.

McClaren left Beckham out because he wanted to mark himself as different from Sven and stubbornly left him out when he should have been recalled. Capello has left Beckham out for one simple reason (which you seem unable to comprehend) - the fact that he has not played a game for four months. He has said that once he is playing he will be considered.

It lays a marker down that the individual is not more important than the team.

And that is the problem. The game is not and never has been about Beckham getting 100 caps, it is about Capello's first chance to work with his new players.

I couldn't give a toss whether Beckham is a legend or a new kid on the block. He hasn't been picked because he is not match fit. Nothing more, nothing less.

It is important as it's the first time an a long while that a new England manager will have had a number of friendlies to work with players before being thrown into a qualifying period. If international friendlies were not deemed important then they woul not be played.

We'll be calling for Beckham if he is playing regularly and playing well.

He will get his cap if his form merits it. It's also worth mentioning that he would already have his 100 caps if he hadn't "cleverly" got himself suspended in the 2006 WC qualifying campaign.

Jesus wept there's some long winded stuff here - does anyone even bother to read it, cos I don't......

Single cell intelligences like yourselves, should limit your replys to monosyllabistic grunts and groans, or at most, a sentence (3 Lions excepted)...:)

Someone start a thread about the likely starting line-up, so we can get away from Beckham et al........

I would like to see (fitness permitting):

    ..........................Carson

    Richards.........Rio..........Ledley (Capt)........Cashley

    ........................The Yank

    ........Jenas............Stevie.............Joey

    .............Looney

    ..............................Mikey

At half-time, if he's anything like Sven, he could change it to:

    .......................James

    Johnson.......Woody........Lesco.......Bridge

    SWP........Carrick........Barry........Downing

    ..........Agbon.........Crouchino

If Beckham hadn't been sent off in 1998, he would have reached 100 with the Croatia game at the very least.

    So there's that at least.

Cappello knows Beckham has worked with him and knows what he can bring . Picking a half fit player isnt going to help him just the media to write him off again because he isnt going to look as good. There are plenty of players he doesnt know and he will want the opportunity to do that now before every result is vital again. Finally because it at least shows some backbone 5 minutes into the job and each national newspaper had chosen his first team for him for this friendly.

I get sick that the media and fans are always dictating who the managers should pick. Its not just suggestions and thoughts anymore its outright demands or else talk. Just for the sake of him getting his 100 caps, Beckham can earn them the same as all the players before him have and at least he can say it wasnt given to him.

I think you are being a little harsh on Bridge. Yes he was shyte against Croatia, but who wasnt? He has been playing well of late and after A. Cole would you honestly want to see Shorey? I am suprised Baines has not flourished at Everton, I really thought he was on the cusp of great things when he moved from Wigan.

Terry and Lampard (like it or not) will return to the squad eventually and most likely force more players out of the squad, but for now I expect to see Shorey, Upson, Davies, Woodgate, Downing (hopefully), and possibly Owen dropped.

Nice to see Capello considering some youngsters as well.

His family emigrated to Canada and he was born there. Then he moved from Calgary to Munich when Bayern got him.

    How is he a Yank?

I would have thought that the fact that Hargreaves was born in Canada would have been pretty common knowledge for England NT followers. His parents emigrated to Calgary 1 year before he was born. He could play for Canada, England, Wales and I think Germany (residency) and he chose England.

Do you think a person born in Scotland would want to be called English...in many ways it is the same.....Canadians do their upmost to differentiate themselves from the US, but most English people are not aware of the differences and, truth be told, most could care less.

I'll put my coat on now.

Apparently there are as many ignorant people in Blighty as there are outside of it. For the past 230+ years there have been clear differences between the two countries, in fact when Owen's parents were born Canada was barely even independent from the UK. Hardly cause to name him after the country to the south. Just stupid if you ask me. If he chose to represent the country of his parents' birth and his heritage why the hell not? No-one complained about players born in any of our other colonies, etc...

What will WHF do if Almunia is picked for England? Commit suicide?

Wasnt the first time Hargreaves lived permanently in England when he moved to Man U?

Doesnt seem to be the perfect national. Not that I give a shit. This nation sucks.. we need as much help as possible...
