Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal There is no reason for either Celtic or Crew to do a damn thing in order to a) make the Polish national team coach happy or b) make sure a player is game fit when a given international competition is imminent. It's simply not a consideration. Neither outfit is running a charity. Although paying actual money to some of the guys who've been wearing Crew unis lately is fairly close to it. What IS a consideration - for Celtic - is that they are paying 12,000 quid a week to a guy who never pulls off his warmups. They're not such a massive club that they can afford to eat that kind of salary. Add to that the fact that, with the transfer window closing tonight there is literally no place else on earth to send him but MLS and no team in MLS offeing anything for him except Columbus, and basically Celtic has no choice. Either make whatever deal they can swing with McCullers and Co. for a fee and some salary budget relief OR see him walk away in a couple of months for nothing. Indications are that Columbus is offering something in the neighborhood of $200,000 to get the guy right now. Add to that the roughly $300,000 they'll have to pay the guy between now and the end of the year, and that's an easy half million bucks, a hefty chunk of change for Celtic to walk away from purely out of stubbornness. Crew, on the other hand, can walk away from this any time. Their fans may not be real happy, but HSG has demonstrated numerous times that they wouldn't pluck a hair for the fans in Columbus. Celtic is over a barrel here. They'll huff and they'll puff but in the end they'll make the deal. They simply have no other option.
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal That's not true, Bill. Zurawski has stated that the main reason he wants to come to MLS is to prepare for Euro 2008. If the Crew don't help in prepare, he would deservedly feel wronged. He isn't coming to the Crew just to enjoy Buck-a-Brat night. You know I could easily refute this point, but why bother. Let me just say that this comment is inane.
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal And you can tell because when examining the blood under a microscope it's high in "polish sausage Cholesterol" (I hear large chunks are even visible to the naked eye!)
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal Alright, its the 31st and its HELLA late in Europe, so when will this shit be made official?
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal probably sometime before the MLS transfer window closes on April 15.
OK. So let's assume Zurawski is on his way to sunny Columbus. We have a clever Argentinian midfielder in GBS to feed him balls. Is there anyone else of that caliber in our midfield? Maybe we also need to pick up Christian Gomez?
I think we're OK in back if 2 things are true. 1) Marshall's concussions are over (which I doubt) & 2) This kid Iro is any good. Word on the street is that he has slow feet & is easily tied up by a clever dribble or pass. Well, we always have Marcos Gonzalez. Wait, we sold him. Ezra. He might actually be the oldest man on earth. Wasn't Brian Bliss a defender? Is Ezra older than him too?
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal No, you're just Pollyanna. He wants to come to the Crew so he can play and prepare HIMSELF. He's not coming so Sigi or anyone else can prepare him. Now if he came and the Crew didn't play him, then he'd have a beef. But Columbus isn't doing al of this for a benchwarmer. Your thesis is simply whack. The guys' coming to get some PT. We're bringing him in for the same reason. If it makes Poland happy, fine with the Crew. And if you had a sense of humor, like a normal person, then it would just be lonely for exercise, so I guess it's good you don't.
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal No, what is "daft" is some dude from across the pond using the most inaccurate measure of population despite anecdotes from people who live in Chicago, have been to Chicago, have a clue about Chicago, etc....The reasons for the census being inaccurate have been explained. God damn, and they say the US schools are bad
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal A report released on October 22, 2004 in honor of Polish Heritage Month, entitled “The Polish Community in Metro Chicago: a community profile of strengths and needs,” shows a Polish foreign-born population of nearly 139,000 in the Chicago area, which approaches the historical high of 165,000 reached in 1930. Approximately 68,000 or nearly half of the Polish immigrants living in the Chicago area arrived after 1990 Nearly 182,000 persons in the metro area speak Polish at home, making it a population larger than Rockford, the second-largest city in Illinois. Of these Polish speakers 41, 571 do not speak English well The population of Ohio is 711,470. Hmmmmmm...I don't know what point you guys are trying to make...other that theres a whole lotta Poles in Chicago. I think that "More poles outside of warsaw" started in the 30's and it's just become part of local lore. Whether it's true or not.
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal I don't know what that's about either. Anyway, not that anyone cares, but it's look likely that Zurawski will end up in Columbus: http://www.dispatch.com/live/conten...ew01.ART_ART_02-01-08_C6_OP97OM7.html?sid=101 There, now that that's out of the way, we can get back to our enlightening discussion of Polish-Americans, Polish immigration trends, and the value of the US Census. Please see, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_American and http://www.allied-media.com/ETHNICTV/polcensus.htm for more background. Finally, re: the census, I have no idea how accurate the census data are in counting how many Polish-Americans live where in the US. I would point out, though, that in terms of Chicago, you do need to understand just what's being counted. The City of Chicago's population is about 3 million. The Chicago MSA's (Metropolitan Statistical Area) population - which includes several counties in Illinois and Indiana - is over 9 million. There's also the Chicago Consolidated MSA (CMSA), which extends up to Kenosha, Wisconsin. So saying there are X Poles in "Chicago" doesn't mean much until you understand which "Chicago" is being referred to.
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal Your first link doesn't work, I found nothing on this subject in the Celtic website
Re: Zurawski to Columbus Done Deal Just try this: http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/crew/index.html
Looks like the Crew negotiated to hard of a bargain, Zurawski is headed to Greece. http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/display.var.2011707.0.window_is_not_closed_at_celts.php
Brilliant, well done MLS $600k is nothing these days in the transfer market, presumably even for MLS, as DC are prepared to spend $900k on Franco Niell
It's on Larissa's website now. I hate you MLS. I hate you and your single entity bullshit so goddamn much. F*** you too, HSG.
