Well, my thoughts are... relax, let Dom work his magic. So far we haven't signed anyone who hasn't blossomed in Houston, maybe they have seen something in Tony that is going to work out for us. So, for now, chill... in anxious anticipation. :D

that press release smells like Wharton School, Marketing Degree. if not, at minimum its still east coast, private university.

if you work in the Dynamo marketing department and wrote the above or know who did, let me know if i'm right. i like to revel in my awesomeness :D.

I was talking to a friend of mine who was born in Scotland and when he heard his name he basically said this:

    Gabor Kiraly > Tony Caig

And Kiraly has been known for numerous gaffes (mistakes). He most recently was seen in Burnley v Arsenal when Eduardo went through 1 v 1 and Kiraly didn't even try for it he just bent his knees and stayed glued to the spot.

Four freakin' years - I hope he is on for like $50,000 or so. He's not the future, just Onstad's backup for the next two years.

There's no way that Dom is excited to "obtain a player of Tony's caliber". I did see that DC signed a South American keeper to compete with Wells; maybe we can get him back sometime if he boots a few balls.

Let me start by saying I know nothing about this guy and he may not be the answer.

That being said, if I read correctly, we only signed a two year deal with a two year option, which means we are only locked in for two years (he is locked in for four if we want him). This makes sense to me. If we get a development guy at some point this year, you want to give him a few seasons to come up to speed. In that time we need an experienced backup to Pat. If at the end of two this guy 1) does not work out OR 2) the younger guy is ready we can decide not to exercise the option. It makes perfect sense to sign this type of agreement for an experienced keeper.

As I started with - he may not be the guy but I will trust that Dom has seen something in him at least to be a back up. If you work under the assumption that you trust Dom on the player - the deal makes sense. Hey, Dom has done nothing to make me believe he does not know what he is doing when it comes to evaluating talent as it fits into the Dynamo system.

Don't be too quick to condemn Tony for giving up a goal lobbed by another keeper. That's pretty awful, but most veteran keepers have given up some incredibly embarrassing goals during their careers.

For example, in 2003, the SJ Earthquakes acquired a 35 year old keeper out of the USL, Pat Onstad, who scored a keeper's own goal in a game against KC. IIRC, Preki took a corner and Onstad reached up to tip the ball over the crossbar, a fairly routine keeper play. But instead of tipping it over the crossbar, he just slapped it right into his own goal. It was bizarre. That Onstad guy turned out alright anyway.

Re: Welcome Tony Caig - Agrees to four-year contract

Ah, Tony Caig. I have season tickets to the Whitecaps, I saw nearly every home game he played and even a couple on the road. My son and I had a pre-game ritual of standing behind the goal (about where the photographer's line would be in a larger stadium) and watching the keepers warm up, so we even talked with him a few times.

By USL-1 standards, he was very good. He didn't split time, he simply didn't spend the entire season here either year. Arrived in May 2006, left in June 2007. With him, they were the best team in USL1. He organizes exceptionally well, he's a pretty good shot stopper. As noted, he does flap at the occasional cross, but overall, we were impressed and hated to see him leave.

But, he left on a weird note. After 2006, Toshack left, and Caig, seemingly happy, took on a role as player/goalkeeper coach. But early in the 2007 season he apparently told the Whitecaps there was a family illness that would force him to return to England. He said he would leave in six weeks, apparently even offered to give them a list of available English keepers. Sure enough, in early June, he left. Within a couple weeks, Gretna was trying to sign him. Vancouver believed he had been tapped up, and refused permission. But once the USL season was over (which is after the transfer window closed) and his contract expired, Gretna was down to one keeper, and was allowed to sign him as an amateur, he couldn't sign a professional contract until the transfer window opened on Jan. 1.

Now, just as he's started playing regularly there, he's off again. And as Lenarduzzi implied, what happened to the family illness thing?

Even so, I hope he does well for you. Seemed a decent enough guy when he was here, and he certainly brought the Caps some success.

Re: Welcome Tony Caig - Agrees to four-year contract

Someone posted this on another website earlier and I thought it was a joke. That's an absolutely crap signing, you'd better hope that he's not your number one 'keeper because he's woeful.

Saw him ship two goals against Morton recently in the Cup, and while he wasn't *solely* at fault for either of them, he could have done ten times better with the second one. Plus he flapped at crosses.

I wasn't at the replay but Morton then put three past him at Palmerston.

I said during the first game that he was rank rotten and nothing's changed my view since then... I hope he is your number one, that would be funny :D

p.s. I've only ever been to one Dynamos game, it was at FC Dallas and it finished 1-1, whoever you had in goal that day was far, far superior to Caig on that showing, albeit he didn't have that much to do.

nachOking, you better get your butt back to Texas and attend a match in Houston. Love to have you :D

As for Caig, he will not be our #1 GK - that spot is for Pat Onstad. I have to say we have been spoiled with Onstad. Nothing like a grizzled vet to lead the way.

Sorry, my girlfriend's from Dallas, so that's where I go and that's whose matches I watch ;)

I have only once been to Houston, and it was to visit her grandparents, who have since moved. Impressively large place... but far too humid for me!

Art - what's your source on this? If true, then I'll be the first to say that they overpaid. That is more than any other backup keeper in the league made last year, and Caig's experience and stats don't seem to say that he's worth that much.

I was hoping they would get him for $40-$45k, $50k tops.

Re: Welcome Tony Caig - Agrees to four-year contract

The trouble is though that was just one example of his awfulness and cock-ups. There were plenty, plenty more. Ask most (sane) Blackpool fans what they think of Tony Caig and they will just laugh and hope to God we never have the misfortune of having him back. He was bad enough playing for us in the third tier of the Football League which no matter what any footy snobs over here might think is of quite a bit lower standard than the MLS.

And I wouldn't read too much into him having been at Newcastle United and Charlton Athletic in the Premiership as at both clubs he was a back-up keeper he certainly wasn't ever first choice at either club. And the bit about him having a wealth of "international experience" just made me laugh.

As I said before I hope he does ok for you guys and I do wish him and you lot well. Just I don't really hold out much hope.

Anyway we signed Paul Dickov on loan from Manchester City today so thats another 35 year old for us. :D

    Interesting bits IMO:

coaching? The article mentions opening up a coaching school, but what's this about the deal with the Dynamo and "coaching?"

Return home regularly? Not on a five figure salary, he won't!

I hope that is just bad information.

"But Houston stepped in last week to offer him a dream move to America with a two-year playing and coaching deal, with the option of a further two years."

No offense to Tony, but who is he going to coach? Unless this means the Academy Teams.
