Yeah, I know. Plus, they traded Chivas for their second DP. They seem to think that the second DP is a given....like everyone has two.

Yes - MLS usually makes up the rules as they go along but this is not the case. You can buy out a DP players contract - however, that means you lose the rights to that player. And you can not get them to renegotiate to a lower non-DP salary.

Reyna was offered a buy-out by RBNY and refused the offer.

As for the second DP - NY acquired that slot for a given number of years - I believe five. The DP they acquired from Chivas is not tied to a specific player so if they dumped Reyna they would retain the DP slot.

if we sign both Martinez and Peralta, shouldn't we let Vanney go?

We got McTavish as a back up, and he's a pretty good back up.

Then use that money to acquire a solid winger.

I'll tell you this much, from a guy playing with basically almost a full hispanic team with our captain being white and only understanding certain phrases and using alot of hand motions if it comes down to it we would still be good with benny captaining. Plus in other countries like argentina english is studied like Spanish in HS's here in the US. We'd be OK, soccer is an international language. Players understand more so the way they play than language IMO.
I agree with this, Vanney is going to be basically a super sub, and for what he will most likely want he isnt worth it. Let him go, and lets get a good winger or a fresh cheap defender to sit just incase.

From the way the Chivas players wanted to go at him, I am pretty sure he knows a few choice words! :D

Agreed. However, could Burch already be the winger we're looking for? I know this has been discussed, and Vanney as an outside back is precarious at best, but I thought it was worth mentioning again.

I hope Gallardo does come to play for DCU... (puts River Plate fan back inside)

He can definitely boost DC United in the middle.

Goff's absoute refusal to comment on this - even in the comments section - has me intrigued. Normally he's at least say he hasn't heard anything...

Goff has commented, and says that Dave Kasper "has declined to comment" re: Gallardo.

    Even more interesting...

The only thing more extended I found searching ar.yahoo.com was this piece:

    http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/deportes/8-97811-2008-01-22.html

Which mentions DC once in the second to last paragraph. Since I don't speak spanish I don't know if it adds anything.

It basically is saying how ramon's(ramon diaz thier famous coach) plan of getting Gallardo didnt work out, and he decided to go to play in the US instead.

And it said that the offer they made him, for being san lorenzo is abnormal not something out of the norm, im guessing the price of like 800grand US a year as i read i think before. And also it said Berro's(dont know who that is) isnt familiar with the team he's going to, US DC United.

Well guys, i think this firmly says it all and Goff doesnt want to admit it, but it seems with the veron crap at least, when all media outlets were reporting that he was staying yet we thought he was basically here, and SI/CNN screwed up and reported he was coming but the Argies were right this basically means IMO that Gallardo is ours, and is coming here. Thats it, we got him and Gomez will go to some other team.

This is my theory and i am sticking to it.

Yes I read that same thing, just can't find it now. It was 800k or 850k and 2.5 mil for the transfer fee or something of that nature.

    Berros is Gallardo's agent.

I also have link that put Gallardo with DCU as far back as last month. Read it and give me your opinions. NYRB feels that they are going to get Gallardo based on statements made by JCO, their coach, but personally I think that he's coming your way. He's trying to take a stab at some of that VERON money. Here's the link---> http://www.goal.com/en-us/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=529453

Well you probably havent been keeping up as this is more of a DC rumor, but someone recently stated that on ESPN deportes JCO admited that they have 2 DPs and that, that most likely wont let them get Gallardo and he admitted that.

So it seems we most likely will get him.

And i remember now when the veron deal was off, there was rumors circulating that he wase our second in line DP, and now that he is on a free transfer we can outbid most teams wanting him. We were about to pay veron 3 million a year. Not many if any teams could have matched that in America. How much is riquelme getting paid right now at boca? a Little under 3 mil euro a year right?

Yeah I agree, I think that Gallardo will go to DCU. Frankly since I'm in NYC I would have liked that he played for RBNJ, obviously closer to go watch. Anyhow it seems that this deal was in the works for a while now and it was probably dependant on Gallardo getting himself free from PSG. That being accomplished its turns into late breaking news. Good luck guys enjoy.

I hope he comes. Don't want to jinx it, but my gut feeling is that he will come and gomez is gone.

    1. He's coming on a free--there should be no transfer fee.

    2. Agree there were rumors a month ago. But with Veron supposed to be coming, there were all sorts of crazy rumors about an Argentine all-star team: Lopez, Gallardo and maybe Veron's cousin or brother all signing. So I think the earlier rumors were just that-rumors.

    3. Bolivian Fuego--as for Goff not admitting it, here is what I think the deal is: Goff right up to the denouement refused to say "Veron is coming to DCU." He'd always hedge, stuff like "well, it looks like it may be happening but let's wait until he actually arrives here." In today's Post he finally mentions the connection with Gallardo (which indicates that at least DCU and Gallardo talked--he won't mention a rumor just cuz it's out there). I think after the Veron circus plus the desire to make a big deal out of Gallardo signing if he does indeed come, DCU is being extremely closed-mouthed about Gallardo. These aren't the Ray Hudson days anymore.

What we have are quotes from Gallardo, a bunch of people around him, a range of foreign press articles and some circumstantial evidence. I think this probably means he's coming. But, for a variety of reasons, I don't think it happens until we hear the resolution with Gomez. I don't see us bringing in Gallardo and then going "and, uh, oh, Christian Gomez has been traded to X." I think that piece happens first--in part because that's how I think the organization works. So either we trade his rights or he completely leaves MLS but I think that gets handled first than we bring Gallardo into town and announce his arrival.

    Agree completely with JoeW.

If this plays out the way it looks now (i.e., Gallardo to DC and Gomez to Colorado/Qatar), I'd like to point out how amicable and professional both sides have been. I mean, neither United's management nor Gomez' people started sniping at each other in the press over the new contract. In a negotiation as drawn-out as this one (hasn't it been a couple of years since they started talking), I'm sure there have been many times when that seemed like a way to put more pressure on the other side. Thankfully, it never happened. Seems rare to me these days.

God, writing this post makes me feel old. Don't make me get outta this chair! I'm puttin' my teeth in! You kids get outta my yard!

    Two questions:

    1) You guys don't see DCU keepin'/gettin' both?
    2) What would have to happen for us to keep both?

Just wonderin', I know it'll be tough.

Gomez + Gallardo? Where would they play, and where would fit fred? I would say it was possible but the signing of neil makes it seem very unlikely since Gallardo is a #10 and we're set at forward now.

Well, there's the first overstatement of the new season. Way to go Count, now we'll have trouble scoring all season. Nice job. ;)
