help everyone.....I need people to point out the good and bad of it all........

my husband called me today from work on his lunch as he always does and was gushing about this kitty that was on the front page of the animals shelter flyer. It was female and had all its shots and spayed already....only 2 years old and short-haired, all grey /dark blue...really pretty I guess. So heres the deal......our daughter is really small and has asthma already. She is SUPER quiet and scaed around new people and strange places, so when we go somehwere new, she clings to my leg like a spider to a web.......that is, except if the place we are has a cat or dog around. She will chase after that animal and play with it and love it...she is very gentle and nice to them, too. So my hubby wants to get her a kitty to grow up with. Now- I am a cat lover- I grew up with one from kittenhood to age 17 myself and that cat was my baby- cried for a week after she died.
so the pros and cons for me.........
Pros---I know Ella would LOVE it...and if we go down to the county shelter and get one that already had shots and is spayed, that is much cheaper on us, and we can pick and choose as to how it reacts to Ella and everything else....i luv having kitties around (I miss it) and I think it teaches good responcibiity and such.......
Cons--we would have to keep her a secret from our apt manager which is fine, but it would be an inside kitty which means a littler box.....which my husband will fight to clean even though he'll promise it will be his job. We are jam-packed in this apt as it is and I honestly have nowhere to put it except for in the corner of our dining room (what nice dinner smells and looks, right?) and lastly- how do I keep my 1 1/2 year old out of the litter box?! No matter what kind we get, I know she will find her way into it and play in the "sand"........also- short haired doesnt always mean no shedding- and I HATE shedding!

so help---gimme your pros and cons and help me make the decision...pls!

Kitty litter boxes stink and out door cats get rabducted by goths on halloween. Otherwise cats are pretty neeto! (If someone else takes care of them). Get a kid instead, they are much cooler.

She's already got one of those.
It helps a lot to use a litter like Arm & Hammer that absorbs the smell as well as everything else.
Definitely make the cat an indoor cat. Not only might it get abducted by goths and assorted devil worshippers, there are also neighbor cats that it could get into fights with, there is the problem of feline aids, and in this area, we have coyotes, which love to eat cats.
I take it that the asthma has no link to a cat allergy.....since the little one already goes after animals.
Major problem sounds like the landlord.

Indoor kitty, by all means, Linds. And do whatever it takes to keep the cat indoors, even if you have to change the stinky-poo in the kitty box twice a week.

I'd hate to think what might happen to our poor baby puss puss if we ever let her become an outdoor cat again, especially at her age.

The last time she ventured out of doors (some years ago), she came back with a massive bite mark below her neck -- apparently, a dog she thought was friendly wasn't so friendly. We took her to the vet, blood and all, immediately with the fear that we were going to lose our poor baby.

Oh goodness, Linds. That's a good one, especially at Ella's age. I think you're right about her getting into the litter box. But I can offer two suggestions that might work for you. One get a covered box with a door. We have one and it helps in so many ways. First, the litter isn't in plain site. Also, it contains the odors. And, some cats throw litter out of the box, so the cover and door mean less mess from that. I've seen some wooden or wicker type boxes that you put a litter box in that might even help more and be harder for Ella to get into. They're really pricey though. But they might work as a side table or something too. Let me see if I can find one.... I'll post it in my next post if I can.

What we've done in our apartment is pull the couch away from the wall and put the box behind there. That might be an option. Though it might not. It might look funny and encourage Ella to play back there. But you can try it and see.

Anyway, that's the advice I have for now.

Okay, here's what I was talking about....

This one is really, really pricey, but it can function as a place to scratch place also: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3261+1926+14885&pcatid=14885

A rattan one that's less pricey, but still pricey: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3261+1926+10276&pcatid=10276

    And what we have: http://www.petco.com/product/5689/Van-Ness-Enclosed-Cat-Pans.aspx

Like I said, we have that last one and we put it behind the sofa. It works well. And we only smell the odor for seconds after the cat uses it, and only if we are sitting on or near the sofa. So it works well for us. But I'm not sure how well it would keep Ella out. Maybe because it's covered it might discourage her a bit....

One would want to know precisely the penalty for getting caught with lease-violating pet, and prepare for such before creating a bond between a young child and kitty that could possibly be broken. Up to the landlord (might have to make a deal, especially when kitty discovers the joys of hanging out on windowsills).

Litter box: Child can't get to what she can't reach. Think height. Kitty won't mind climbing to do her business.

Good advice! Especially about the window. We have a one pet policy here, and we were going to have two. Before even signing the lease I was straight forward with my manager. He said as long as we don't cause problems, he'd let it slide. But if we do cause problems, it's just another reason for them to come down on us. He also said he's done this for other residents, and I have seen that in the windowsills. :) We ended up with one cat anyway.

But that's a good thing to keep in mind. My manager also stated that if he left, he couldn't guarantee the new manager would do the same. I asked him what he thought would happen. He said we'd get a warning and have to find a new home for the pet first. So it's a very valid concern about Ella getting attached and then the manager/landlord telling you you can't have the cat.

Wow, I do this deed generally once a day and some times twice. Maybe I'm doing this too often

I use "SwheatScoop" or something like that. It keeps the smell to a minimum and it can be flushed. (Another hint for the landlord is kitty litter in the dumpster)

The Height angle is a good idea too.

Still quite a bit of work and alot of down side if you have to get rid of the kitty due to a lease limitation

well- I had my mind all made up and then my hubby came home with the picture of this adorable kitty and I dunno anymore......

We havnt had the time to really just sit and talk about it, but I am thinking that we will wait and just get her a kitty for her birthday present. Her birthday is only a little over 5 months away and our lease is up at the same time, which means we will be moving into a bigger place cuz I will (finally) be working again. I'm not really worried so much about the manager deal cuz she is a nice lady and everyone else around us does it, too......I think its pretty much like what Erin said- if we cause problems then they would get upset....the most they would do, though is charge us like $400 for a pet deposit. My biggest concern is that it is just so small in here already and we have every little nook and cranny full as it is.....I think just the smell of any pet in general would be just too much. Plus, I am thinking that Ella will be 2 and something as easy as feeding the cat would be a great little chore for her at that age and make her feel proud.....If I had her do it now, I think she would eat the cat food.....haha. Its not like the animal shelter will be out of kittys in 5 months....

but the picture of this little kitty is tearin me up inside.......it is ADORABLE!

    Very sensible.

It's not like Ella is begging for a kitty right now right?

The wait is good since your plan is to move into a bigger place.

I went to the Contra Costa link from this thread and noticed a link to this article about the exhibits like "Body Worlds2" (which I saw and enjoyed along with my 6 and 9 yr olds who both liked it too).

There is a poll attached to the article that is kind of amusing mainly because I was torn between the choices: There are people I'd like to see plasticized and Law makers have more important things to worry about.

I went for the second though I would have picked one that asked if I'd like to see the lawmaker in question plasticized

I saw this article in this morning's paper. I was just as amazed by the word "plastinized." Something new I guess. I think we have another over-reaction to imagined racism. Should have plastinized a couple of whities to satisfy the lawmaker.

Hopefully, this will be the top issue discussed when the primaries roll into California, since everything else obviously must be just peachy out here.

Note to Ma: Med change! Or could you actually be so knee-jerk and squeamish, you instantly throw out bills banning anything that displeases you? Might as well come down to SJ and join the "Madison Nguyen is the Antichrist" mob while you're in such a feisty mood.

I was wondering if I had that word wrong...

The exhibit in Sacramento is different from the one in San Jose and I don't remember any distinct race in any of the bodies I saw. Most had no skin so you couldn't tell if they were black or white.

The "Drawer Man" did have his skin and he was definitely caucasian though.

The word apparently refers to the process they are using to put the bodies in that condition. Never heard of it before. As to your pointing out that you weren't able to discern any particular race, that is probably the case. Ms. Ma may be the one guilty of racial stereotyping. I'd have to see the whole exhibit before I would be sure in my own mind of that, however.

The one photo with the Contra Costa article showed a person that definitely looked Asian and nothing like the displays I saw at Body Worlds2.

I agree, that I'd have to see all the exhbit to see if she has a point, but then again what did they do? Go abduct people in the far east just to prep 'em for some show?

After seeing Body Worlds2 I was ready to sign up to be put on display, I'd probably look great for a long time :D

    Apparently that's what Ma thinks.

I would like to see this show. One thing we can be sure of: with Ms. Ma creating all this fuss, it will definitely be more publicity for, and greater attendance at, the exhibition. :)
