well this answers some questions! http://www.acorn-online.com/news/publish/wilton/27269.shtml Kristine Lilly, the former standout soccer star at Wilton High School who later went on to Olympic and World Cup soccer fame, has announced that she is pregnant and will not play in the upcoming Olympics. In an exclusive interview with The Bulletin on Monday, Ms. Lilly said she found out she was pregnant in November, and is expected to give birth in July. While she said she would not play in the Olympics, Ms. Lilly, who is 36, said she did not plan to retire from the sport. “It’s going to be a little bit of a transition, but I’d like to play again when the women’s pro league returns next April,” said Ms. Lilly. “I would also consider playing for the national team if I get called up again.”
Yes, she is not “retiring”. The WNT contract has a maternity clause, so she still gets paid 50% this year for being out for that reason, and I think will still be under contract for ’09. Not “retiring” also does not affect any endorsement contracts she may have requiring her to be on the WNT and allows her to play for Boston in the new pro league.
Congratulations to Kristine and Dave. Something told me, from her post World Cup quotes and demeanor, that she was looking forward to other things in her life besides the Olympics. I guess this is the answer. It certainly opens the door for the emerging talent up front. Does anyone seriously see her continuing with the Nats post-Olympics....anyone...Beuhler? There is nothing of significance for a year and a half, and she has directly ruled out another WWC. The league, on the other hand, is a more realistic and fitting place for Lil to continue playing.
All best wishes to Kristine Lilly and her husband. It's nice to see so many of these women move on & have families.
Conradulations to her. I still have an autographed photo of her some 8 years ago when she was still dating Debbie Keller's brother, Steve on my book shelf next to my desk. It was during a visit to Chicago at a Fremd High School soccer game where I believe Steve still coaches. She's come a long way in finding the man of her life and now a family.
Congratualtions and best of luck to Lilly and her family. She had a great career with the WNT and there is no better reason to step away than this.
The things one misses when they step away for awhile! Congrats to the parents to be - but I can't see how this isn't the end of Lilly's WNT career save for a testimonial friendly. I could see her playing for the Breakers for a couple of years though.
please stop ... I'm getting a visual Seriously now - it will be tough to come back from that at her age
Life is sexually transmitted. Heres hoping its sextuplets, I would love to see a whole front and mid of little Lilly clones in about 18 years. grats.
Dude! I sent the money but still haven't seen any movies, my anniversary is coming up...need some new ideas! ; )
