With Joe Cannon's trade to San Jose, it got me thinking of all the possible goalkeeper changes from 2007 to 2008.

If potential transfers occur, this is how it could look:

    2006
    EAST
    2007 CHI - Matt Pickens--------------------2008 - Jon Busch/?
    2007 CLB - Will Hesmer---------------------2008 - Will Hesmer
    2007 DC- Troy Perkins----------------------2008 - Zach Wells
2007 KCW- Kevin Hartmann-----------------2008- Kevin Hartmann
2007 NE- Matt Reis-------------------------2008- Matt Reis
2007 NY- Ronald Wattereus-----------------2008- Jon Conway
    2007 TOR- Chris Sutton---------------------2008- Chris Sutton/?

    WEST
    2007 CHV- Brad Guzan----------------------2008 - ?
2007 COL- Buona Coundoul------------------2008- Buona Coundoul
2007 FCD- Dario Sala------------------------2008- Ray Burse Jr.
2007 HOU- Pat Onstad----------------------2008- Pat Onstad
2007 LA- Joe Cannon------------------------2008- Steve Cronin
2007 RSL- Nick Rimando----------------------2008- Chris Seitz
    2007-SJ - ---------------------------------- 2008- Joe Cannon

7 to 8 of the 13 teams could have goalkeeping changes. Seems like a large switch from prior years.

My question, is this type of turnover at the goalkeeping position something we should come to expect year after year?

Hey, if your keeper plays bad, that's a problem.

Perkins and Guzan are transfers, meaning they played very well. Onstad is riding out until his retirement (end of this year?). Wattereus needed to go and Seitz is a quality kid who should be a stud (and Euro-bound) very soon.

    Don't know about Pickens.

Burse is a great keeper and Sala is....aged. I kind of wish we could have traded for Burse as he is great. I was impressed by him.

And right now, MLS in general is in something of a transitional phase. Don't be surprised if things are shaken up league-wide for the next 2-3 years.

Unlike any other position for americans, several if not many of the keepers that played in MLS last year could easily be picked up by foreign teams as high up as the EPL and la liga. The salaries aren't high enough here to keep all the talent in that particular position. However, even some backups in the league (Burpo) are quality.

I don't really disagree with your post, but just wanted to point out that Sala is 33 years old. For a keeper he should be in his prime. Consider - Friedel is a few years older, Keller is about 5 years older. Age should not be the issue for Sala.

Maybe I used the wrong words....his knees seem aged beyond his actual age. His body just isn't reacting the way it should. He's still a good keeper, just not the great one he could be. Injury probably has something to do with that.....

Most of us expect Rimando to remain the keeper for RSL, with Seitz with the U-23s often (and at the Olympics) and Rimando coming off of a very strong year for the teal,

    Greg Sutton, heh.

Chris was an English forward who retired last may.

Honest mistake though, sorry for nitpicking.
