He's been waived by NYRB. Think we should give him a look? I personally like the guy. I think with the right coaching her could be a wicked like he once was in College.
http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2008/01/red-bulls-waive.html He's been hurt a lot and Ives says he has a reputation for being lazy. He's only 23. Could be interesting if Frank can fix him.
Santino signed with MLS while he was still at Archbishop Curley HS in Baltimore, so I have no idea who you are talking about.
With the new waiver rules, it doesn't cost us anything to look at him, so I think it would be OK to do so. On the upside, Santino liked Frank when he was in El-Lay and he blamed the mess on "higher ups." Santino said that lots of players showed up to practice late and there wasn't much Frank could do about it. So I think that Santino might be happy to play for Frank again. On the Frank side, Frank has had plenty of time to evaluate Santino. He knows what Santino's strengths and weaknesses are. I'll trust Frank to make the call on whether or not Santino is worth a look. I won't be upset either way. Though I do sort of hope that he plays for us and Frank makes him into the killer player he can be. GOOOOO QUAAAAAAKES!!!! - Mark
I'm not a big admirer of Quaranta. From my point of view he's been pretty over rated, and as FUAEG points out he is injury prone. If Frank decides to take him on, I will certainly give him the benefit of the doubt. I think I remember his salary being quite high. I think the risk would only be worth it if the price was right. Risking a roster spot is one thing. A big risk who takes up a lot of cap space is another.
Correct. Frank didn't play santino in the few instances he was healthy. I saw santino in hermosa while he was "rehabbing" - fat pig, just wanting to hang with the little girls. put a fork in him, complete waste.
Amazing really. About 24 months ago it looked like he was going to make the WC squad as a back up RM. How quickly one can fall.
At one time I had hope for the kid, but he just hasn't developed at all over the past few seasons. I wouldn't waste a roster spot on him at this time. If he's still available in March, and we need a 3rd string mid then I might think about it.
That's been the story of his entire career. 7 seasons to show something and he didn't have one single good year in MLS.
At this stage he's probably over the hill. At the time of Donovan, Convey, and Beasley he was one of the league's promising young players but now, he looks like USL-1 material at best. Even if Yallop's magic touch he would suit Ian Russell again for a roster spot before taking a flyer on Santino. However, if Frank decides to roll dice, takes a chance on Quaranta, and he makes the team you're buying lunch/dinner!
Actually the way I remember it, his first few years with DC were pretty good, and Ives' soccer blog says something similar. If he lost (or never had) a good work ethic, I wouldn't bring him here. I'd expect that to be the #1 criteria for a Quakes player, and I don't think a low work-rate is something that can be fixed by other people. It comes from within.
Not only that, but now he's actually losing "a's" in his last name. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want a guy on the team named "Qurnt". It looks like part of a keyboard layout, like, I don't know, "asdf".
The big plus for signing Santino is that it will make all your overweight supporters feel better about themselves because they'll be able to look at Santino and say "hey, I'm in as good a shape as that guy, and he's a professional athlete. Maybe I can order the macho nachos..." It would boost concession sales... I gained 10 pounds while he was on the Galaxy roster...
Sgt: "I know what you're thinkin' soldier...you'd like for me to die so that you could piss on my grave, wouldn't ya?" Private: "NO, SIR, SIR!!!! AFTER I GET OUTTA THE ARMY, I'M NEVER STANDIN' IN ANOTHER LINE AGAIN!!!" (Old joke but it seemed fitting.)
Yeah, perhaps you're right, I was gonna check his career stats on mlsnet.com, but they've already dropped him from the pool of active players. That's cold. Quaranta never seemed to play much - always injured, or over weight/ineffective, or dealing with personal issues. Not to sound super judgemental, but he also fathered a child when he was pretty young - 17 or 18, and with a younger woman I believe, so he maybe wasn't all that focused on making it as a MLS player. Maybe that's irrelevant.
Not that I would ever try to go against my Italian brothers but speaking simply in terms of soccer is Santino Quranta really any good and has he ever proven himself up until now?
I remember that he and Eddie Johnson came into the league the same year and were both about the same age - pre-Freddy, they were the face of young potential in the league. They were supposed to both graduate to bigger and better things in Europe. I guess that while Eddie became a Grown-Ass Man, Santino simply became a Man with a Grown Ass.
Eddie still has a long ways to go too. Will going to Europe will help improve his game? Funny how on the other side of the coin, coming back to the USA didn't help the careers of Reyna & Jovan Kirvski or John O'Brien , at least not in any dramatic fashion.
