Well.... He is tall. I don't remember him being particularly fast. He caused Knave's thread a few years back amenting DCU's inability to make a Nat Borchers (and then Bobby Boswell showed up the following year). He is probably about as good as an average bobby boswell. Wouldn't be a bad pick up...
If you are saying that Olsen was lacking quite a bit as a wide midfielder last year, then yes, your statements are laughable.
To give Skippy credit, he never said the Argentine press were at fault. He just said whenever an Argentine transfer rumor is going around, don't believe it until he shows up on game day. And that I don't think is that far off the mark. My only caveat is I think it should be applied far more broadly to include Brazil, Mexico, and most of Europe. And any club associated with Ronaldo.
DCUtd can correct me if I am wrong, but it seemed that the Argentine press was reporting the entire spectrum of outcomes on both Veron and Simeone in the hopes that someone would get it right and scoop everyone else. We heard many stories about Veron reported both here and in the Argentine press and to suddenly believe a completely unsourced story and accept this one version as gospel would be, well, BigSocceresque. Is that a word? If it isn't, it should be. And FWIW, DCUtd, I agree with you about the Euro press and others. It could be that only the US press doesn't react to soccer transfers in this way because really, who cares except for a few internet nuts?
I'd really like to see us go after Borchers. He was a strong defender before he left, had something like 86 straight starts. He also played left back in norway and has the ability to play in the middle. Nice depth and possibly gives Burch the ability to push forward into the midfield (that idea has been thrown around). We'd have to trade houston for his rights, I wish we would have thrown that in with the boswell trade. They can't have the huge of a need for defenders, so i'm sure that they're asking price would be reasonable.
Nobody own Borchers' rights. If anyone did, it would be Colorado (who are likely to pursue him anyway).
Ives is reporting that Houston has his rights. I can't find where, but I swear he did in the last few days. Perhaps since the new change in the "rights retained" rules no one owns his rights.
Ramiro Corrales not Borchers: The club is interested in Ramiro Corrales but Corrales' MLS rights could be an issue. Apparently the rights belong to Houston. Yes, MLS rules are crazy. http://njmg.typepad.com/sbi/2007/12/osorio-press-co.html#more
This being the place for factless speculation, I will hereby speculate. Or postulate. Or verbally masterbate. According to this article, Nery Cardozo is considering a transfer move from Boca to Aguiles in Mexico. Cardozo is 21 and has just finished his 4th year playing for Boca on the wing (left, I believe). Verón said that if he were giving advice to a kid about a similar move he considered with United, he would tell him to go for it. So, complete factless speculation - United needs a young fast attack minded outside midfielder, and this could be a great pick up. Maybe Verón called him up and said "Hey, you should look at this club in DC!" and then called Payne and said "Well, I don't want to come, but maybe you should have a look at this kid." And now that he is considering a move to Mexico where the futbol is slow and dreary, and players are the best paid in the hemisphere, maybe a tantilizing move to follow Schelotto to the land of opportunity could convince him to go to DC instead..... Or not. But this is the rumor thread. So....
Goffblog reports Arguez is off to Hertha Berlin on a training stint. HB was Sanneh's club after leaving United err..getting dissed by Sunil over $50K.
Sanneh was a force at WC2002. Don't know if he has HB to thank in part for that, or if Sanneh could have been the player he was in '02 had he stayed in MLS. Arquez needs playing time. I hope that comes in DC at some point, but I wouldn't be surprised if this HB training stint helps lead to an overseas career for him (at some point). he's still age-eligible for the next U-20 WC, is he not? so any impact he can make there, will also likely aid his career.
Resurfacing an old rumor, this article (in Spanish) says now that Emilio has settled (or close to settled) his financial issues, he is deliberating the possibility of playing for Honduras. What makes this article particularly interesting is it says the team doesn't need Emilio so much because he is a proven goal scorer, but more because he is a good guy - a family man, who doesn't have a reputation for partying and living it up....
Good luck to Emilio if he plays for the Honduran National team. But, he will be the enemy on certain WCQ dates!
Which distinguishes him from some of the more famous Brazilian strikers who are on the Brazil NT ....
Goff hasn't reported anything, but last I heard negotiations were not going well. However, it would not surprise me if United push a little harder to re-sign Gomez, since they were unsuccessful in signing Veron.
Don't tell anybody, but I heard we're signing a new player. Word on the street is that he's a real pro.
Rumor here in Buenos Aires is we are signing a Facundo Erpen type player. By that I mean, a center back that has little name recognition in Argentina but is important for his team. Rumer in Bolivia is Etcheverry is signing a contract with Oriente today or tomorrow to be there coach. http://www.facetasdeportivastv.com/leer.php?id=42654
