http://www.pgatour.com/qschool/leaderboard/ Troy Perkins' brother, Travis, is sitting in fifth place after three rounds of the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament's final stage! This is pretty exciting, because the top 25 players in the tournament receive their PGA Tour Cards, which means they can play in (just about) any tournament on the tour. The bad news is that there are still three rounds to go. Everything I've ever read or heard about Q-School is that it's the most nerve-wracking, gut-wrenching, confidence-crushing things you can ever attempt. That card is the difference between eating steak and lobster in Hawaii versus hot dogs in Laramie. So give Travis a little psychic shout-out in the direction of Winter Garden, FL. And, Troy, if you're down there and you read this, tell Travis we've got his back - and we can't wait to see him play this summer in the AT&T at Congressional!
That would be a weird coincidence, as Dominic Mediate's either uncle or cousin is PGA golfer Rocco Mediate.
What's also weird is that when I clicked on Perkins's page from that link, the banner next to it was the Woods/Federer/Henry ad.
And for all that, qualifying through that method is a very poor predictor of success on the PGA tour. It's much better to win on the mini tours.
After another round of golfing today, Travis is tied for 5th on the leaderboard after a 3-under. Now one round to go, and the odds of Travis getting a card appear very good.
1. You obviously then have never been so stupid as to ask a cheerleader out on a date (or so I've been told anyway). 2. Good luck to T-Bro in his quest. But then again, should he fail, who's talking about hotdogs in Laraimie--there is always a position with Dick's in Fair Lakes waiting for him and a future job in mortgage banking (should the housing industry ever return).
http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/columns/story?columnist=sobel_jason&id=3139907 And he's in! Congrats to Travis and the Perkins family. They have a small blurb on him (#9 on the list)...they don't seem to think he'll have a lot of impact, but screw them anyway. ESPN hates soccer.
Wow - if Carlos Ruiz knew there was a Hooters Tour he would have taken up golf instead of soccer: "After an unsuccessful 2006 season on the Nationwide Tour (he earned a mere $29,168), Perkins had three top-five finishes in 14 starts on the Hooters circuit this year." Who wants to win the Claret Jug when you can win the Hooter's jugs [ok, that was a little classless ]
All those guys out there on tour have wicked skills. Getting out there via Q school is a huge accomplishment and as someone pointed out, very nerve wracking and gut wrenching. There were two or three 2006 Q school grads who won on the PGA Tour this past year so a big expletive to you ESPN. Hope Travis can snag an invite to Tiger's tournament here in July. If he plays well, he's here. I think the number to retain your tour card was somewhere between $750-$775k. Three top tens secure that. Plus once the Fed EX Cup ends in September, there are four events in October where you can scramble to get the cash needed if you are on the fringe. A win on tour gives you a two year exemption plus numerous sponsorship opportunities. Go get it Travis!
Super congrats to Travis and all of his family and friends. Mini tour golf is a lonely difficult road. Qualifying as Travis did (passing through 3 stages of qualifying) is one of the great accomplishments in professional sports. In any PGA Tour Qualifying season there are usually less than 5 guys who make it from stage one into the top 25, so the odds are outstandingly slim. The list of players that he beat out in the final stage is also an incredibly impressive list (notably multiple PGA tour winners, major winners, and seasoned tour pros). Soccer analogy: Travis is Rushden & Diamonds and just made it through to the FA Cup Final, beating out Premier league teams en route. Cheers, Tim
Hey! There's no "[R]" in the thread subject! But seriously, folks... I saw a guy on the Golf Channel during the coverage, and he said a personable rookie could make about $175K once the shirt / hat / shoe / glove / ball / club / putter endorsements were finalized. And that's even before you get on the plane for Kapalua! And we all thought getting $100 for tying your shoe on TV was cool. Recommended sports reading: Bud, Sweat, and Tees - I forget the author, but it's about Rich Beem's rookie year on tour. Played in anonymity for months, then won the Kemper and EVERYTHING changed wildly. If I recall correctly, Beem was also a Q-School baby. So, go get 'em Travis! And suck up to Tiger for that AT&T invite!
Actually, isn't Roy Wegerle on the tour? If so, we're getting quite a DC United connection in the sports world. Hmmm....maybe we can get each of them to wear black and red on the course, or perhaps a United scarf....or instead of those woossie golf gloves (to prevent calluses) they could both wear a pair of Troy's keeper gloves--yeah, that's the ticket. Some good ways to increase exposure of MLS, United and also generate more word of mouth for both Wegerle and Perkins on the tour.
Roy's a fine golfer - he fluked into the Alfred Dunhill a couple of years ago through individual qualifying. But... http://www.minorleaguegolf.com/bio.asp?Record_ID=44 says: Career Earnings: $2,350.62 If Travis makes just one cut, he'll triple that in a week. This is NOT to say, by any stretch, that I'd not have Roy in my foursome in the DC United charity tourney. Too bad signs are verboten on the PGA Tour. Maybe if Travis plays locally we could do a little clap-clap--clap-CLAP-clap after he holes out each hole.
