I know there was a reason (or so I think) we protected Pavon instead of Gavin (something to do with foreign born players perhaps?). Is there someone that can explain this to me? I'm confused why we would protect him and then waive him.

Curious as to why we protected Pavon in the draft, only to waive him? There was no damage done, but I wonder what the logic behind this was.

i think we take Nunez. He is capable of playing on the left hand side of midfield which is more then can be said of anyone else on our roster at the moment.

What if Veris is claimed tomorrow, will he not play against Wellington this weekend? Weird timing.

Isn't orlando perez also a decent defender? We could use a few more decent defenders...

Llamosa fits in w/ the Galaxy's current plan for identifying "young talent."

Could it be that they were looking to move him (thinking that he had some value) but no one bit on the offer? Perhaps there is a possibility of a decent signing in the works?

I'd like to see Merlin given a shot. He's my favorite from the list.

You know he played a lot of minutes up top for Chivas, one of the best teams in the league, and scored a single goal (against us)

Playing for our team, starved for service, how many goals might he score?

I think that we should take a look at New Englands Chris Loftus he is a 6'5" forward could be nice to bounce balls off of his head. Nunez and any other young guys would be ok to but know old men. lol I saw a couple on the list.

I'm not sure how the waiver draft in MLS works, but in other sports if a player is put on "waivers" another team may claim him under the terms of his current contract. If nobody claims him he then becomes a free agent.

I'm anxious to see if we pick anyone. I really hope we get someone who can contribute and provide us with depth but of course its a waiver draft and there isn't much to chose from. I'd be happy with Nunez or Arvizu. I wonder if anyone would pick any of our guys?

I could see Yallop taking Friesz and possibly Veris. In fact I would be surprised if nobody else took Veris.

Oddly enough the only guys I would be interested in taking are from Chivas. Nunez, Merlin, Perez could all be useful.

We had to protect 3 of the 4 senior internationals. In other words, we had to protect one of Pavon and Xavier. My guess is we knew that San Jose wouldn't take either and we thought Pavon might have some trade value.

If Pavon clears waivers, we still have the rights to him and we can renegotiate the salary. We might trade him to someone at a cheaper salary.

Speaking of Xavier, he wasnt protected and as far as I know hasnt traveled to Oceania for the friendlies. Does this say something about his status with the Gals? I would definitely like to see him back next year.

Early reporting of the draft has Yallop picking Pavon as his first selection.

Or absinthe. If you mix absinthe and champagne it becomes Ernest Hemingway's fave drink "Death in the Afternoon".

Xavier was not protected for the Earthquakes expansion draft, but that is done, and he wasn't selected. He was not placed on waivers. And he was in France & contemplating knee surgery, from what we heard last week.

None of these players was "placed on waivers". They were unprotected for the Waiver Draft. There's a huge difference.

OK, I'm sure you're correct, but what's the distinction?

"On waivers" would denote that anyone could sign them. However, MLS doesn't have that sort of thing. They have the waiver draft which is basically a one-time opportunity for a team to get a player at their current contract. If they weren't selected, the original team would still have the rights to those players for the next 12 months.

However, they weren't "unprotected". All those players were actually waived; some might get new contract offers (Pavon, Nunez, Herron), others might get camp invites in the pre-season, but most are likely going to have to find another league (or line of work) all together.
