This comes from a recent edition of the Italian weekly sports magazine Guerin Sportivo: Haddad chooses Israel Rudy Haddad, the 22-year-old ex attacker of PSG, Valenciennes and the French U-21s, has started the process to obtain Israeli citizenship and to therefore be eligibile for a call from the Israeli national team. Last July Haddad, who is of Jewish faith, refused an extension to his contract with the Parisian club as well as an offer from Anderlecht in order to sign a 3-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Unfortunately I don't think Haddad is allowed to play for Israel, under the fifa rules it states any player to take place in a competitive match for their country (at any level) can only play for that country in the future. To my knowledge the talented French playmaker has played 5 times for the France U21, scoring one goal in the process. Haddad is a really great player in my opinion and I hope I'm wrong but I think he's ilegible to play for Israel.
He was a massive starlet at the age of 17 in PSG's youth ranks where a career of greatness was predicted for him by many. He certainly hasn't come close to living up to his full potential, but contract offers from PSG and Andrelecht seem to indicate that people feel he is young enough to turn around his career yet. From a pure potential standpoint, he may be unmatched in the Israel squad.
It seems as if these are the rules, but we all know exceptions are made by FIFA to this sort of thing quite frequently. What doesn't make sense is the article to start this thread, He "has started the process to obtain Israeli citizenship and to therefore be eligibile for a call from the Israeli national team". You'd think he would only start the process if he knew he could play for Israel.
not necessarily, he could just be getting israeli citizenship so that he doesnt count as a foreigner on Maccabi Tel Aviv. and it shouldnt take too long right....he is jewish....
The article specifically states that he will be available to receive a call up from the national team.
Looks like(article in Hebrew) Haddad will get his Israeli citizenship this week and will be eligible for the Israeli national team.
