http://blogs.chron.com/sportsmedia/2007/11/post_17.html According to this guy's blog MLS did pretty good in Houston area, but got killed by American football later on.
5.6 is very good. That's going to catch the attention of local media even more than the team already had.
NFL games will pretty much slaughter anything else that's on TV on Sundays. This is Texas we're talking about. An 0-16 Texans team would likely manage to pull the highest ratings in Houston on Sundays.
The NFL will probably destroy anything anywhere, Texas or not. The only chance for MLS Cup to beat NFL anywhere in the country would be if a team like Columbus made MLS Cup final.
If I remember correctly, they got like a 4.0 for the game last year, so this combined rating would be a significant improvement over last year.
its good that an improvement..but its still extremely low for a cup final. the game time was horrible..11 am in houston. Why not a Sat night?
if you think 114K homes for a cup final in a strong soccer city is very solid then the mls isnt anywhere close to what you make it out to be.
Yes, I think it's very solid, particularly when you consider it was going head to head with the Texans game and the combined rating is better than last years' final. You're not going to beat the NFL on Sundays. That's never going to happen. You can't look at what the NFL gets and compare to that. It would be unrealistic to expect anybody to beat their local NFL team, at least for the time being.
Any American Football game will kill any rating for any sport or even in Texas. Hell. "Jesus Christ's Second Coming LIVE!" would be even preempted.
Yeah, because no one in Texas -- or elsewhere in the country -- watches college football. And Saturday night is actually a horrible time for TV viewship in general; I wouldn't be surprised if Sunday afternoons do better in general. It's worth pointing out that the sport that can call it's own shots when it comes to a championship (the NFL with the Super Bowl) has their game on a Sunday in late afternoon. Anyhow, next year, it'll be a much more normal time on Sunday afternoon. That's probably the ideal at this point for MLS.
Wow; just, wow. Sportsfan, you're amazing; and I don't mean that in a positive way. Anybody who knows anything at all about television ratings would never, ever, claim that a 5.6 rating was a bad number. You're always complaining about how people don't listen to you and that nobody has a grip on reality and/or is in denial and/or can't handle criticism. But, more than any of the other insane things you've said on this board, the fact that you consider a 5.6 rating to be a bad number reveals just how absolutely clueless you are.
It's not just the cluelessness. What I don't understand is why he's so emphatic and intense with his contrarianism. I get the whole cynicism thing. I get why it's satisfying to puncture hype. I just don't get why it seems to be his driving mission around here, and why it's so excessive. The language choice alone tells the story: "sucks..." "extremely low..." "horrible..." "isn't anywhere close..." Those aren't the words of someone interested in a reasoned back-and-forth. They're the words of someone who apparently enjoys visiting here so he can get himself all pissed off about the overenthusiastic soccer fans. They're maddening to him, and he likes the sensation of feeling maddened.
So, here you go. Last year MLS Cup got a 4.1 in Houston. This year it was a 5.6. That's a 36.6% increase over the previous year. That's also only one point lower than the World Cup got in Houston. http://blogs.chron.com/sportsmedia/2006/11/even_with_dynamo_in_mls_cup_nf.html
He's pretty much a joke around most forums. It's really at the point where everyone should just ignore his posts. I'm not saying he shouldn't be able to post because it can be quite amusing to read but it's clear he really doesn't know what he's talking about and he is only trying to get a response. Anyway, 5.6 is solid. Good work all around Houston.
And let's not forget; the first hour's rating even eclipsed "FOX NFL Sunday" and "The NFL Today". If it wasnt' for the Texans game cutting into the Cup, those ratings woulld have been way higher than the 5.6.
Game time was awful. 9AM west coast time. Sorry, I'm sleeping in until 10AM and then the NFL is on anyways. It needed to be a Saturday night game.
