How about a name for our national team? Talk about a lack of development! Do we really want to be the (g)nats? South Africa is Bafana Bafana, although the president of S. Africa is embarrassed by the name. I think it means "the Boys." Are we too cool to be the Sams? Sam & Sam Bradley, Sam Altidore, Sam Adu?

Even though I am a Red Sox fan, I think The Yanks is the most fitting.

I never heard anyone on these boards call them the Yanks...You're going to lose New England and the South on that one! :)

"The Yanks" are pretty cool. I like it. Perhaps "Team America." Love that movie.

We could take a page from the US National Rugby Team and call ourselves "the Eagles."

    Team America works, too.

As a proud Southerner, Yankee is not a good nickname, it's an insult you hurl at others on the interstate, usually proceeded by "damn". :D

I say nominate something from Team America, the movie.

Yanks is British commonwealth, overseas. Listen to Flyin Ryan about how some southerners see it. So it's an insult, anglo-centric and masturbatory. I can just hear people talking about spazzin' yankers. There was a Team America in the past, I think Pele was on the team, maybe somebody can correct me. Eagles is pretty cool. Think Colbert's opening.

funny how alot of people dont have a problem with the term Yank..... Yanks-abroad.com.... hell even BS has a Yanks Abroad forum.... it seems to me that its becoming more common base to call americans Yanks as it is to call British Brits... if its meant to be an insult towards us (from britain and australia) then i would say it would make it even better

Team America?? >.< god i hope not

  13. I think Team America was an NASL team made up of mostly USMNT players with a few ringers... They were no good.

The Yanks purely sucks. I hate baseball and anything associated with it. The Yankees are absolutely the worst.

What about something like the "Screaming Eagles?" Not that great, but at least it sounds kind of fierce, and makes some sense since the bald eagle is basically our mascot. Our Ruggers are known as the Eagles too.

I also like Sam's Army, but with the present political situation I think it would be a bad idea. Plus that name is already used.

Jamaica has the best nickname... The Reggae Boyz.

Well the "Nats" seems to be used most colloquially.

"Reggae Boyz" is awful. Sounds like a 80s band or something.

I don't mind Nats at all. Maybe in a couple of years we will have something but as of now Nats will have to do.

Yanks or Eagles is simple enough but Nats is OK as well

How about Stars and Stripes maybe a little too much

"Yanks" is more than fine, it is excellent. When I have been cursed or threatened by political thugs on three different continents the colorful language was always attached to the anchor of Yank. If it's good enough to get clobbered for, in this Most Excellent of Worlds, it's good enough to kick a ball for ;)

Well according to fans "the Yanks" is normally used in English speaking countries outside the US. But Stars and Stripes seems to be the best.

Nats is like "the selection" that other countries use. But theirs sounds like an elite and ours sounds like a small bug.
So it's the Nats vs Bafana Bafana, looking forward to it!

Nats is "ok", but it has two flaws in my mnd [which is more important, you decide].
First, no one around the globe will know what you're talking about when you refer to the Nats, nor even most Americans. It signifies nothing about this country or the sport in this country.
Second, pronounce "Gnats". Then pronounce "Nats". Are we sure we want to be identified with critters such as these?:D

The rest of the world calls us the Yanks so we might as well go for it. And it is more than just the union soldiers or the baseball team, we were called the Yanks in WWI and WWII by just about every ally.

If the rest of the world called us "p*ssies" would you go for that too?

(Sorry, couldn't resist and I'm in an arguing mood right now. :D)
