At last, a knowledgeable football mind speaks the truth and concurs with my opinions:

"More than 30 years after his own heralded arrival to bring popularity to soccer in the United States, Pele has some unflattering opinions on the newest MLS star. "David Beckham is more of a pop star than a player," said Pele in an interview Sunday in a German newspaper."

"English soccer star David Beckham "is more of a pop star than a player," and Real Madrid is a great team because it can afford to buy star players, soccer legend Pele said. "

That's funny, I'm not sure who's opinion I care about less.

Considering that Pele would show up to the opening of a ********ing newspaper kiosk, I don't really think his opinion on Beckham's media-savvy is worth spit.

If Pele had half a brain, he'd be doing something more worthwhile than interviews.

Wow, the level of stupidity that comes out his mouth nowadays is on the same level as his soccer playing skills in the 70's.

So you stated, but then the rest of your post was all quotes from Pele.
    I don't get it.

    Look

Galaxy fans question everything... dont be a friggin robot like Alexi Lalas wants you to be.

Pele's comments are all very credible, his stature in the soccer community is impecable and his credentials are astronomically greater beyond what becks has ever done or ever will do.

David Beckham is an average soocer player. With an enormous image. sure he helps puts asses in seats. but will he put silverware in the trophy case?

Right now.... and that means right now mind you. All signs are pointing to david beckham being the biggest sports fraud since the 1919 black socks scandal.

Thanks, TequilaJoal! I was wondering when a non-robot would post a comment. I simply cannot believe some of these guys attacking PELE! WTF? What he says is the truth. Someone had to say it (Even though I have been saying it since day one). I have been getting shelled for it, but now find comfort that the GREATEST OF ALL TIME concurs with me.

Move on. Get some real players with that money. Do we really need a "sexy" coach and a "shirt salesman"? LAG is not a real soccer team. It is a travelling souvernir booth.

    "Beckham a sporting fraud"

Being a Real Madrid fan and an England fan, i saw the results last season when RM tried to do it without beckham, and i see where England is now for trying it without beckham.

That is all i have to say.

PS: These Pele comments are at least 2 years old, and why don't you include in your post the comments Pele made about Beckham being one of the best in the world.

United85, maybe they don't teach English in Paris, but, if you click on the links I provided, you would see that they were from YESTERDAY. Or, are you saying that, apart from being the greatest footballer ever, Pele can also see the future and knew two years ago that Beckham would be playing for the Galaxy and would be stinking it up?

Gee, mods. Maybe you could re-title this thread:

Pele Agrees With Directortecnico: And they are both wrong, again!

Who's trying to shut up the greatest footballer in the history of soccer?

And since when is being the greatest footballer in the history of soccer in the world of the universe give you the authority to be right about anything you say about other soccer players or the sport in general?

God forbid you try to understand other people's opposing opinions, rather than belittling them, oh greatest bigsoccer poster this side of the galaxy who is so great that the greatest soccer player in history of soccer agrees with him, and not the other way around.

Is Pele still playing? You know, still lacing up the boots for the Cosmos?

    No?

    Then why do we care?

I'm sure Becks is hurt....he gets to wipe his tears with dollar bills and give Posh the business every night. He'll pull through, I think...he's heard it before, a time or two.

Doesn't matter what Pele says, there's no evidence of anything. There's no evidence that Beckham will be a great player and there's no evidence he'll be a pop star. He's been injured almost the entire time! Pele is talking about someone who's only even played a handful of games, and for how many was he actually fit? I don't mind criticism of active players but be fair at least. Pele is one to talk, he was a party animal in NY.

You know...I also wondered why in the world Pele just retired from the game he loves so much; after his playing career, he became a FIFA ambassador/face. For a man so accomplished, why doesn't he manage? Can you imagine the team coached by the man who is basically the essence of soccer, like what Jordan is to basketball (speaking of which, same question)? He's around the same age as Sir Alex Ferguson.

Being a good or even great player doesn't make you a competent coach or even a smart person. Jordan was a failure as a mentor to the Wizards...I'd pick him first every time at the park though. Pele, too.

    Pele: legendary player, useless pundit.

Because that would be too much like work.

Life is so much easier when you can go from banquet to banquet accepting adoration and unquestioning responses when you say really stupid things. And the money is probably better.

This is NOT something to trumpet... it's something to keep buried in the closet.

Pele, while easily the best player of all time, has consistently proven that his off-field knowledge is weak, at best. In particular, his knowledge of American soccer is absolutely non-existant. His recent comments about the MLS salary cap and that rich teams should be allowed to buy all the talent thee want, prove his stupidity beyond a doubt.

Pele should continue to let his feet do his talking. The drivel that comes out of his mouth is laughable, at best, and only serves to be an embarrasment.
