Re: Official D.C. United vs. Chicago Fire Eastern Conference Semi-final Leg 2 Pre-Match/In-Game Thre

W.S. Churchill had the right spirit in this 4 June 1940 radio address:

"I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.

At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation.

The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

Really? you have a link that 999 out of every 1,000 penalties on target go in?

this study of French and Italian first division games suggest that at least between 5% and 10% of pk's taken are not on frame (see table 4) with a 75% scoring rate. So I'd suggest that of ten total kicks taken, you can expect a goalie save on 2, and a miss on 1...assuming each goalie saves one, it's the missed shot that determines the winner.

My experience tells me, though, that a shootout is generally about which team takes their pk's well, the GK rarely saves a well taken penalty. Ask Roberto Baggio how it goes. And now I'm thinkin' with Luciano, Jaime, Gomito, Olsen, and Vanney, I really like our chances on PK's.

I thought we had home field advantage and don't have to go to France....

I would add Fred to that list but add a thought...how many of those guys would be on the field at the end of 120 minutes of soccer? I think there's serious doubt whether Gomez, Moreno, or an injured Emilio would...

Here's a guy who hasn't liked all those pesky flags for a long time.

Maybe if they were just waved after goals or something...

Alas, poor Cuauhtemoc! I knew him, Gomez; A fellow of infinite crying, of most excellent dives; he hath found himself on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those danglies that I have kicked at I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now, diving douche?

I agree with everyone else's lineup

    Perkins
    Namoff Boswell Vanney Burch
    Simms
    Olsen Fred
    Gomez
    Moreno Emilio

With possibly Moreno stepping back with Gomez.

    Anyone have the referee info?

Wow, that is profound. I'm gonna cry in a minute.

Does anyone know why he is allowed to go on with his gestures and obvious contempt for the referees without penalty?

To foul, or not to foul - that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to confine the fouls to Cuauhtemoc's extremities, or to take arms (and feet) against the neckless one, aim at his manroot, and suffer the slings and arrows and rosy card from the referee--'tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Moreno is FIRED UP, no PKs, we win straight out. I guess that no call in game one on the Conde hand ball got to him.

Have we firmly established the undisputable fact that we're doomed?

/ I don't really know if we're doomed or not. I just like to prepare for the worst.

    I'm confused.

If you like to prepare for the worst, then you should prepare for us to be doomed. You don't need to ask if it's been established that we are, in fact, doomed.

What's your real question? Do you want someone to reassure you that we're going to win?

Sorry, can't do that. I believe we're going to lose 1-3.

you heard it here first. Boswell scores late winner, al la 2005 regular season.
seriously, i've tracked the stars, the House of Capricorn is in regression, which means the water signs are ambigious at best. Chicago should stop to notice the small things in life, like pollen. Red works, but not for them. Libra is rising and out to ******** them stupid. The Fire should tackle those feelings of hopelessness by giving up.

PS, and chris armas sounds like leon sphinks.

    Did somebody say "doomed"?

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

It is absolutely imperative that we score first. If Chicago scores first, lock it up, go home, the match is over.

Chicago's gameplan is really simple. Keep lots of bodies behind the ball, pick and choose spots to counterattack. Look for and exploit 1v1 situations against our defense, specifically our central defenders. As long as the score stays 0-0 or WORSE if they score first they can play this tactic, and they play this tactic very well. They will gladly pack the box, push, pull, grab, and foul to frustrate us... and we will get frustrated.

The longer the game goes in their favor, the more chances we need to take. Which means the more chances they'll get for 1v1 against our ponderously slow defense. The more we push forward, the greater their chance is of scoring (ironic I know).

    HOWEVER

If we score first the whole thing is different. Chicago is not comfortable when they have to carry the run of play. If we have the lead, that means we get to play "keep away", which we are VERY good at.

If we win this and win this good (which, just for Knave, I predict cannot happen), I think we win it all.
