I don't know, I think 4mybroRRT showed pretty good humor for having been hit studs up from about three or four sides. You know 4mybroRRT, it's dangerous posting anything controversial while folks are still pissed about a result and are ready to strike... Maybe if you'd waited until after next Thursday's victory.
Monster, I wish you'd show a little more passion in your posts and let us know how you REALLY feel! Here is my take on Moreno and Emilio playing when they did. 1. Soehn would have preferred to play neither player. If he could have gone through this match with both firmly planted on the bench, I bet he'd have loved that. 2. Moreno was probably a bit sore and definitely not in game shape or sharp but he was willing to play. 3. Emilio probably wasn't ready to play. As Soehn said after the match, Emilio wanted to test the ankle and it's also not a bad gamble to put him in and see if it changes the dynamics of the match. I recall Bora putting Wegerle in during the end of the Brazil-USA "94 match. Wegerle was a physical wreck at that point but you hope he'll be a decoy or divert the Brazilians. Ditto with Emilio--you give him a little competition to help get him ready for next Thursday in a way that practice can't do and maybe he gets his head on a ball in the middle of a scrum. With about 10 minutes left, it's not a bad idea. 4. Our game plan was to play twin holding mids so that Blanco would have no space PLUS if he took a dive and earned a yellow card, the other D-mid could switch to him to avoid an ejection. But if you play Moreno to start than you either need to play Kpene or you have to recognize that we're playing a 4-6-0 formation. Now that's a defensive formation that only Steve Sampson would see the merit in. 5. It's difficult starting players that you KNOW can't go 90. Heck, Emilio wasn't ready to go 45. I can just see a situation where we start Moreno and Emilio, then someone gets hurt and then our D-mid gets a yellow early in the match with Blanco and another warning from the ref--treading on an ejection. So we sub for the injury, we trade D-mids and suddenly we're telling Moreno and Emilio to "suck it up" for the rest of the match.
I don't think the coach had any option really...other than trading for a decent forward or backup several months ago. That's obviously beside the point now...I do wonder though if maybe our attack might've been better with Fred or Gomez as a second forward and someone like Mediate, Moose, or DeRoux on the wings. I haven't seen enough of them to really gauge how they'd do in a game like this but they would've added more offense than Carrol.
OK... is there any reason why this thread should remain open? What's that? I should close any thread that bores me? Done.
