I see. If that's the case, then I am sure that the people who organized the rescue effort in California were motivated by demographics.
Well.... there's certainly more of a tax base to support local government services in CA. So they've got that going for them. Which is nice.
That's a studio apartment in my neighborhood. (I'm not rich by any means) I'm hating to hear all these comparisons to Katrina. It's a very different situation. First off, it's a FIRE. If there was a giant fire heading towards all those homes in New Orleans, I guarantee there would have been less people staying behind. Second, no one knew for sure that the levees would break and there would be widespread flooding. If THAT was known, more people would have evacuated. I will state, for the record, that people in San Diego are amongst the nicest "rich" people you'll find. Most of us feel incredibly blessed to live in such an amazing location and we all respect each other.
California real estate prices are ridiculous. I think it's completely different. But I also don't think it's completely inaccurate to talk about the government response in terms of the relative wealth of the people in harms way. BTW, my trip was canceled today. While the facility we're teaching the class in is scheduled to be open (UCSDX) on Monday, it seems too many of the SPAWAR employees have been "disturbed" by the fire. This week has just caused too much upheaval to ensure that we get the kind of turnout we expected. Since the feds are paying for it, and they expect a return on their money (it's not cheap to send two engineers to San Diego for a week), we're postponing until some later date.
You are very much correct. I've made 3 of my last 4 vacations in San Diego and the people are nothing short of awesome, and they are VERY prideful people.
I go there for vacations 2-3 times a year -- it's great having family there. Our last vacation, Labor Day weekend in Coronado, was incredible -- it was hot and humid inland, but down in Coronado, it was warm and breezy -- just like Hawaii, without the five hour plane trip and the really expensive hotels and food. Beach every morning, short trips in the afternoon to the zoo or Horton Plaza or whatever, evenings at the in-laws' place in Bonita for some pool time and grilling and wine -- one of the best vacations I've had. My wife wants to move there. I'll only go if they get an MLS team.
Truly, one of the only appalling things about San Diego. FWIW, Tijuana has a lower division team that's fun to watch and is making a name for itself. Although that name is impossible to pronounce (Xochitlansomethingsomethings).
Shocking turn of events that nobody has mentioned George Carlin's ridiculously cruel comments, but somebody gives a shit what Michelle Malkin says? Lovely. In case it was missed: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/justin-mccarthy/2007/10/24/george-carlins-view-wildfire-victims-get-whats-coming-them Don't like that newssource? People in San Diego should feel blessed to be only 90 minutes away from the mighty, mighty Galaxy. And by "blessed" I mean "like sticking knitting needles into their brains by way of their eye sockets."
Fox Fans the Flames BTW...the hundreds of comments turn out to be 2, it is suggesting domestic Environmental Terra or illegals
The scuttlebutt for the Santiago fire is arson. Not just any idiot with a match, either--they're thinking disgruntled firefighter. Two blazes struck within perfect distance of one another, and done "professionally". Whatever that means, or is worth. I hope they die in a fire, NPI.
While I won't defend his comments specifically, in theory what he says is correct: people are partially to blame because of their methods of construction & lifestyles. Does that mean they deserve to have their homes burned to a crisp? No. But hopefully it can be a lesson to those who live in fireprone areas that it takes very little money to fire resist or even fireproof your own home.
I'll defend him completely. It's Carlinesque truth in humor pure and simple. For 30 years, Carlin has been following the battle of Man Vs. Nature and has been rooting for nature the whole time. This is nothing new or shocking. George Carlin is the greatest contrarian of all time
http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=local&id=5726719 The only thing I could find in a news outlet, but A LOT of word of mouth going around town is that Minutemen were targeting migrant workers. So, you all heard about this in your national news outlets, right? Right?? Sorry that I don't have a link.
Give me a call when Carlin is trying to pass himself off as a serious commentator on national policy instead of comedian trying to be funny. That darned liberal media. ----------------------------------- Stogey23, I'm glad your place is safe, but I'm sorry to hear about your neighbors.
Of course, but I was pretty offended as a person who was forced to evacuate their home late sunday night. O, and I don't live in the middle of a freaking canyon.
I'm sure that is exactly what he was trying to do...he has done it all his life. If he were a presidential candidate, I could see the outrage. Since he is nothing more than a shock jock/comedian, you should probably just brush it off as bad taste. There really is no use getting offended over it.
