From 12 to 2 tomorrow I will be a Fire fan. A draw or a win for Chicago eliminates the scum from the playoffs. It would be fitting that neither the Scum or Quakes made the playoffs since 2005. Since I don't have a team to root for on the final day of the regular season it's some consolation to have a team to root against.
Don't hate me, but i'm actually hoping that the Galaxy somehow find a way into the playoffs, simply because of David Beckham. Its pretty safe to say that the new image of the MLS is David himself along with Blanco, and i want the MLS marketed well and succedd. People overseas have been laughing, calling David's first season in the MLS a complete failure. I'd love it if it came down to David becoming the reason why they go to the playoffs in dramatic fashion, everyone would be . Gross, i never thought the day would come where id want the Galaxy to win. This is pretty much how ill look at it from now on: Galaxy fail to make the playoffs -> "haha you guys suck" Galaxy make the playoffs -> "wow the MLS has some exciting soccer"
Say what you will, they have bene on an incredible run and have shown enermous character. Winning tomorrow would be a well deserved out come for them. Yes, I know, I'm kicked out of the club...
Actually, the rest of the world will likely laugh at MLS even more if a team like the Galaxy that's sucked for most of the regular season suddenly got hot only at the end of the season, made the playoffs and won MLS Cup. As my loyalty to the San Jose Earthquakes trumps any sort of loyalty to the league (always has, always will!), I hope that the Galaxy loses badly on Sunday, though even a close loss will do. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
wow, that's a tough one. As sweet as it would be to see the Galaxy fail to qualify again, the league benefits with Beckham in the playoffs, definately. But ultimately, even though it's great having him here, I can't help but hope Chicago inflict a thrashing.
How about rooting for the Fire because Chicago is a town full of genuine people and true sports fans, and because you remember how gracious they were when we beat them for the cup in '03? If the situation were reversed, they'd be rooting for us.
I'll definitely be rooting for the Fire. As far as the league looking bad in the eyes of people from other parts of the world, they'll put it down no matter what happens. If LA wins because Beckham is there, they'll say it's because the league is weak, if LA loses, they'll say it's because the league is weak. Can't win.
I see it differently. Everyone knows that the Gals are horrible. If they somehow won the cup, it would show just how easy it is for a bad team to win it. Getting into the playoffs in MLS is way too easy. In the West, all you have to do is finish ahead of Colorado and RSL. Come on. They shouldn't have made it into the playoffs two years ago, either.
I don't know anything about the people in Chicago, but anyone is better quality than that trash in LA.
Well, FWIW, after getting off work at Flemington Racecourse today, which involved nearly ten hours of set-up and function work on a Sunday, I think I capped the day with the best way I could (other than engaging in a couple of knock-off drinks with my mates, that is)... Went into the nearby TAB SportsBet and placed a bet on the Fire to effectively end the Galaxy's season. Chicago, incidentally, is a $1.90 favorite to win the game outright.
The situation was reversed back in 2001 and they did root for us, so you're right. LA beat the Fire in the semifinals but a huge number of Fire fans already had tickets for the MLS Cup in Columbus anyway. They weren't going to cheer for the team that eliminated theirs, so they pulled for the Quakes. I guess that's a long way of saying that I'll be returning the favor today.
I'll be rooting for the Fire. As far as the Beckham marketing goes, this season is a loss. If LA almost make it, but fall short on the last day, they will be able to hype the sports soap opera all of next season. I can see the dramatic music and painful montage already. If he makes good next season it will be one of those he really has heart/prophecy fulfilled deals. Can't you just hear Max Bretos and his man-crush. Of course he plays for LA, so I hope they suck next season too!
just throwing it out there, because anything is possible, but going to the playoffs means a chance at the MLS Cup. If the Galaxy somehow find a way into the playoffs and somehow win the cup, how can anyone in their right minds call Beckham's first year a disaster? I don't believe an excuse of the league being "bad" would be enough to cover it. Lets face it, if the Galaxy get in, it will be rightfully so. What a story for this year's club. They bought Beckham to be their savior, and now heres the situation where they put him to the test. It will be exciting to see what happens. I want them to pull it off, only because i think it will silence Beckham's critics overseas...but if Chicago wins 4-0, ill laugh and say go Quakes =] Mixed emotions, cant you tell? =P
Anybody who roots for the galaxy today isn't a true San Jose Earthquakes fan. Screw Beckham, screw alexi, screw AEG! Their suffering and loss should ONLY bring joy to your heart, anything less and you're a fairweather fan.
BTW, if anyone else is having trouble locating the game on your broadcast dial, try channel 66. My DirecTV channel guide says I'm watching "Los Videos Más Asombrosos del Mundo," but it's the Fire/Unspeakable Evil match. Go Fire!* *Limited time offer good only on 10/21/2007
Cannot find it anywhere on DISH (time to switch to another technology, I think...it's degraded significantly over the years). However, I see they're awfully nervous on the LA board. One of the slime did post this helpful link, http://stream3.12milesout.net/cash1700 -- so we are following the game via radio. Not quite the same but looking forward to hearing the crowd explode when the Fire finally punch one through.
The stage was all set for the ex Manchester United player to get the game winning goal and bring his team to the playoffs. And that's just what John Thorrington did.
