At the ugly Seahawk night game on Oct 14, the USL Sounders were supposed to be recognized before the crowd at halftime & the new 2007 championship banner was to be raised on the west side next to the 2005 banner. Did that happen & were there any photos taken. (Of course, NBC Sunday Night Football would ignore this) Which players/coaches/staff of the 2007 Sounders were there? Were any comments made on the field about 2008, the Seattle Sounders, and MLS or USL?
The Seattle Times had this blurb at the very end of their Seahawks coverage: • A banner commemorating the Seattle Sounders United Soccer Leagues First Division championship was unfurled at Qwest Field at halftime, and the Sounders were honored on the field with a video-board tribute. Around 5 players were on-hand, according to a person at the game. No mention of anything other than the Championship.
At a 2009 MLS Sounders match, some new fan will notice those banners hanging in Qwest Field, turn to his buddy and ask, "What are those about?" His buddy will respond, "The Sounders already have four championships, two of which happened here at Qwest Field". - Paul
Banners perhaps, stars no: http://goalseattle1.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=mixer&action=display&thread=1192292673 When Seattle MLS debuts they will have exactly zero FIFA Division One Championships to their credit, but a strong division two past to remember, in context, as a part of the city's soccer history. I'd like to see banners for 1988, 1995 and 1996 also made...from supporters contributions...since the stars will go bye-bye on uniforms and such with the arrival of MLS.
There's no reason why we couldn't create facsimiles of said banners and bring them down to PGE for Portland's home opener next year. Sharing is caring. - Paul
Perhaps give them to the proprietor of either the Bitter End or the Bullpen for "safe keeping." That would be quite the giggle and well worth the $$ to make laminates for them.
The Sounders were the 1st Division Champions of the USA in 1995 and represented the USA in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup 1996. Where they played with only half of their starting line up and finished in 4th place. So they do deserve 1 star playing in the 1st division but this is a different league and when you are playing in a different league you should never carry over something you won somewhere else.
FIFA didn't recognize the 1995 A-League as 'division one,' but I guess it was by default, since MLS was still planning: http://www.sover.net/~spectrum/year/1995.html
Yeah the A-League back then was designated as a division 2 league by USSF, even though it was the top level back then.
Could stars from the A-League/USL chamionships be incorporated somehow into the shield/logo/crest, and future MLS stars be above the crest? That way the city's soccer history is represented and carried forward with the MLS side.
So if you took this and put the stars in the green/white/green/white/green above the name, then I think it would be a great nod to the USL Sounders. You could also think of ways to do this with the other logos, but I think that it's a great way to commemorate the soccer achievements of the club.
