I hope that article is not bullsh!t. Del Piero would be an amazing signing. Not quite as big of an attraction as Beckham, but he would fill many seats. Alessandro is a legend, and I would by an extra season ticket if RBNY signed him!

If this report is true, then:

    1. Reyna is out, or

    2. Every team is getting an extra DP slot, and Red Bull know it

    3. Del Piero can be had for the non-DP max.

I really, really doubt that Del Piero can be had for the non-DP max, so I'd bet on the first two.

And can a Mod please change the 'Qrp' in the title of this thread to 'QPR'.

I'd like to see him signed. He's a forward, but more in the molde of creative forwards like Totti, Baggio, Bergkamp. Not too sure how it would work with the cap though (unless Reyna is either gone or takes the pay cut - which, despite all the rumors, I think is more wishfull thinking because, as I understant it, his contract is guaranteed). Unless there's a huge increase in the cap next year I don't see how he (or any new DP) can fit and allow for enough left over to fill the other holes on the team. However, I don't think he'll be that big of an attraction. He's not nearly as well known stateside as Beckham. There's a very short list of players who would get that type of an increase in interest (Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, maybe Henry and C. Ronaldo). Del Piero I think we'd get a bit of an increase, but not too much. He'd draw about as much as Lothar did when he was with us I think.

Yeah he might not be well known, but Richie will have to see a doctor to get rid of the permenant boner he'll be walking around with if the Juve legend signs. :D

I'd think we are a more attractive offer than QPR. I mean, being apart of the American soccer movement in New York with Becks on the other side of the coast seems alot cooler htan playing lower division english football. Who knows though

    Onionsack,

Those "rich bastards" as you call them reshaping QPR aren't just a couple of nobodies either. Fabio Briatore is the Managing Director of Renault Formula One and Bernie Ecclestone is the president and CEO of Formula One Management and Formula One Administration. They are BIG $$$$$$. Both Briatore and Ecclestone partnered to buy QRP in hopes to build a big team. The are getting ex-Palermo coach Francesco Guidolin and are shopping for team making players to get back up to the Premireship. Naturally, they serious about Del Piero.

    Metz,

Take Reyna a side and announce to him that Del Piero would be taking his DP spot. He then could get the choice of:

    1) Taking a huge pay cut and become an ex-DP or

    2) Ship out!!!!

I don't think MLS would stand in the way of the arrangements to get Del Piero in the league. Besides the huge upgrade in skill, there would be a huge upgrade with crowd attraction.

What a coincidence...I just finished watching a tape of the QPR/NC match this morning. After seeing the shots of Briatore's "friends" in the crowd QPR is my new favorite club, EVER! :)

I think Reyna will take option 3) Stay put and collect his money.

No one wants him, and he must be stupid to take a pay cut at this stage of his career.

As for Del Piero - I love to see him here but is NY the only option for him? There are plenty of Italians in NE and Toronto and both teams could use a big name player.

    Fevernova,

No, NY isn't the only possible home. I'm sure any MLS team would want him the way any team would want Beckham. However, I think you're right. I think he'd make a bigger splash in NY, NE, and Toronto because of the heavier Italian population.

Currently, what it comes down to is the fact that I only read about RBNY being the only team in MLS that has made an offer. I didn't read about any other teams.

As for Reyna, maybe MLS and RBNY would find a way to "let him go" to make room for Del Piero. I'm sure something would be worked out.

If not, maybe he would need a bit of (ah-hem) "pursuasion". Have they started pouring the concrete at Red Bull park? I hear that works well...just kidding!

Reports out of Italy are that he is going to sign a new contract today...it seems the Juventus sponsors didnt want him to go so they are going to give him special compensation outside of his new salary.

    Irish,

Sounds about right. Del Piero is a pillar of the team the same way as Totti is in Roma. The tihng is that since Gianni Agnelli died, there have been some real jokers in the Juventus adminstration pulling some crazy stupid stunts in the past and lately. I could understand their view if Del Piero was the oldest and highest paid player on the team...but he isn't. I could also understand if he was stinking it up on the field and wasting a spot...but he hasn't. Too bad the adminstration doesn't appreciate him as much as the Juventini, the sponsors, and Red Bull fans do.

Oh well, that's Italy for you. It's those types of clowns that has Luca Toni hitting it big with Bayern Munich...where he is appreciated.

    Irish,

Yes, I read about it on the Gazzetta site yesterday. Boy if he wasn't signed, there would have been riots in Torino! Oh well. It was fun to think about the possibilites of getting him foe a while. But hey, we got Reyna!
