EJ had something to prove -- his spot wasn't secure. Landon's was. the CA was for player's like Eddie.
    different situation.

I think Donovan has been playing his nutz off this season. The problem Cohen has is that Donovan is not Totti or Kaka. I recall Cohen even ripped him for having a bad game against Liverpool in a champion's league game. Man thats being overly focused on one man's imperfections. I do wonder what Donovan is thinking when Beckham gathers the boys together in the locker roon and tells tales of Manu and Real.

It wasn't for having a bad game.

He ripped him for playing scared.

They then played a clip from the Guardian Podcast from last week talking about DeMarcus Beasley scoring in the CL, and they said that Donovan had perhaps the worst performance ever in the CL.

Did he ever praise him for the first leg of the CL tie vs. Liverpool played at Anfield in which Donovan received the highest rating among players of both teams? On a scale of 1 to 6, I believe, highest (best) being 1, he got a 2.

Something tells me that performance has conveniently slipped his memory.

When I heard this show was gonna premiere on FSC I almost busted a load. This is the type of show I'd been dying for!! Guys talking about soccer, and ONLY soccer! Too bad these douchebags are well..Douchebags. My general impression is that Cohen thinks he knows EVERYTHING about soccer and well, he doesn't. They had that other Nick there and he was a little better but he left and now it's Nick Webster. Total Turd. Either way, they've spent the last 2 weeks talking about Landon. Talk about obsession.

They may be douchebags but, in their defense, they know their stuff when it comes to English football.

Steven is right. Landon got the award because of his stats. I'd argue that both Howard and Bocanegra had a greater impact on the US team's success than Donovan. He chokes in big games, and doesn't seem to make soccer his main priority. He is content to be a big fish in a small pond. It's his life and his decision to make, but true warriors who live to test their mettle against the best will always get more respect than someone like Donovan.

Is this award based only on play for the national team? or for club as well?

Well you have to take a good look at the person making the comment & that pretty much explains it right there. Cohen & his boyfriend on that show are always going off on players' for this reason or that so you have to kind of take it with a pinch of salt as nobody listens to them anyway. The most comical thing is how they both get so goo goo gaga everytime they speak about the 250 million dollar shirt salesman Beckham. The way they go on about him really makes me laugh. You would think the way they are all caught up in Beck's that Beck's wrte the book on the sport, like he's God's gift to the MLS & soccer in general. That's why I cant watch that stupid worthless show without laughing!

He was ripping the voters, not Landy, and their ignorance of soccer and the Americans who play soccer.

The award for MLS Player of the Year is handled by MLS and its callled MLS League MVP.

This is for National Team play only. At the end of the year, USSF hands out the Athlete of the Year award, and that award is for National Team play as well as club play.

MLS has their own MVP award - which has nothing to do with US national team.

It's good to be Landon Donovan, for sure.

I think Steven's rant, while directed at Landon's performance, etc., was really geared towards the sports media which, many of the sportswriters and bloggers who follow the game seriously aside, really have no clue. They voted for Landon because they knew who he was, not because of his performance.

I work in entertainment and its like years ago when the Grammy was awarded to Jethro Tull for 'Best Metal Performance' when Metallica, also nominated, was more deserving of the award. The majority voting academy chose Tull because they knew who they were.

Both instances are a bit of an outrage, but what do you expect? The Grammy voters are 'old school' music biz people who are stuck in their old ways and sportswriters are more invested in the 'major' sports (and probably like them much better) to care to pay attention to an award like this.

My disdain for Landon is just as old, but it's still valid. Boy is part of the entitlement generation, lacking heart and guts. His life might be good, but I wouldn't want him on my team in a clutch situation.

Entitlement generation? Sounds like Beckham as well. They could be brothers. The only thing that differs between the two is the shirt salesman, Beckham had played for two very big European clubs. In his time with United Beckham was surrounded by legends that decided the big games he was involved in with United, not the other way around. Same with Madrid. He was surrounded by legends. He was at best a decent professional by European standards with his time in Europe but nobody really paid much attention to him until he married the Spice Girl Posh, That move right there made him larger than life. Now he's in a contract with the Galaxy & stands to make with everything tied into it 250 million over the next five years & all he's done this far is sell shirts. Sure he is better at taking free kicks', corners' & crossing than landon but that's about it. At least Landon earns his money by actually playing. Landon might not be the best player in the world but neither is the shirt salesman Beckham. Not by a long shot!

Like Cohen is some expert in the sport? Come on! He's just a wannabe professional that never made it as a pro. He's totally bias as well. Most fans' in Europe view Beckham as a complete joke. Everytime Cohen talks about Beckham you would think God has come to Earth. It's funny actually as he goes on about Beckham & his wonderful God like talent for free kicks', corners' & crossing ability as if no other player in the world is on the same level. Cohen is only fooling the people in the States that know little or nothing about the sport. If Cohen were to say Beckham craps logs of solid gold these same people would believe him. Cohen & Beckham have something in common besides believing their own hype. They are both English & being so have that I'm English so I'm better than the rest of you outlook on life. Like I said Cohen is a wannabe pro that never made it & like Beckham he's making a living out of winging it.

I'm no Landy backer but you do know he existed before the last WC right? He was very good for the team in his early national team career but he has dropped off. He hasn't lived up to the place where most fans thought he would be. I really don't know where the 'entitlement generation' thing comes from. Isn't Beasley part of that same generation?

Of course. Based on my personal experience with those in the entitlement generation there is often a socio-economic aspect. I don't know the childhood stories or histories of either, but that could explain the different approaches.

You have a point but neither has Beckham. I mean, what has he done since going to America? Yes of course he's brought more people to games & increased the sale of Beckham & MLS related items on the market but thats what his deal was designed to do. On the field he's done next to nothing. Donovan dispite maybe having a slump in his career has done one thing alot more often than Beckham can claim which is play! This Cohen from what I've seen of him is always spouting off about things he's in the dark of in more ways than one. The funny thing is he's making a decent living out of being nothing more than a living room, armchair soccer player.
