Got to feel for Roberto Soldado, He hasn't much of a chance but Saviola and Baptista have come off the bench and gotten goals, he's probably superglued to that bench now.

Robinho and Robben changed the way the whole team was playing.

What annoyed me was that Robinho should have got a foul on the left outside the box but didn't get anything. If the game depended on this decision, i would be furious about it.This happens to Guti as well quite often.

Baptista scored a great goal.I don't see him as a starter yet, but he definitely proved he deserves to appear on the team sheet.

Robinho and Robben get a lot of respect from the opposition defenders, there was an occasion Robben was surrounded by four green shirts, and Robinho by three in his first touch near the goal.

Definitely a completely different team after the first two substitutions.Hats off to Schuster for making the right choices.

We really missed Ruud's hold up play today(as we did against Almeria)...I would have liked to see Soldado given a chance to do that job.

    Park bench
If the ref had given the foul(which it blatantly was), he would have had to have given a second yellow and sent him off...to put it bluntly, he bottled it.

Not a great game but points are here and that is what matters. One thing I don't understand. Schuster prefers playing 4-2-2 system. But he plays Diarra, Guti and Sneijder at the same time on the field, that means that Sneijder is forced to play winger. If he wants to play 4-4-2 than he must bench Guti and play like this.

    Robinho----Diarra-----Sneijder------Robben

    -----------Raul-----------Rvn----------

They swayed the game in our favour. Before their introduction we were looking grim with the exception of some decent passages of play. All well and good if doing it in the first two-thirds but when it comes down to the final third we had no killer pass nor finnish. Robben and Robinho's introduction, which was a no brainer imo, gave us width and pace in the attack. Similar to the Bremen game we were just too narrow and it's so easy to trap conjested play in the middle like Betis did. They stretched their offence and allowed Raul and Sneijder to have more of an impact as well so it was not just hteir excellent individual performances that caught the eye.

Schuser really needs to stop persisting with Higuain as a winger. Granted Robinho won't sparkle week in, week out on the flank he still offers more there than Higuain does. We are becoming far too predictable with Higuain and Sneijder on the flanks. Once his fitness improves Robben can be a real weapon on with his pace and skill so lets just hope we keep him out of the injury table.

Away from these individuals it was a poor performance and an unconvincing win. Betis should have at the bery least taken a point from tonights game and had their finnisging been better up top then they would have sailed away with the 3 points. I guess Betis are like Almeria where you just have to grind results out...We'll take it and move on I suppose but when the fixture list progresses and the big boys we will have to improve.

    Key Points:

    - RAMOS MOTM, but we need him BAD at RB.
    - Respect what Ruud does for the team, him not on the pitch caused alot of problems during build ups.
    - Guti loses possession too much
    - Respect what Diarra does for our team, without him deflecting that FK in the 74 minute the game would of probably been different.
    - Good subs helped make the game for us. Baptista's touch looks improved.

    Players

Raul - Tried well, was very unlucky with his shooting through the first half. His great character is shown when instead of diving for a PK he tries to keep his feet. Good job.

    Saviola
    - Good start the first 15 minutes then disappear. Bad.

Higuain - See Saviola. Also I will re-iterate that he is not a right-sided player and seems uncomfortable there. He seems to always trap the ball back towards the middle... I wonder why?

Guti - His performance was horrible until Robben and Robinho came it. Probably because without Double R. Lost the ball ALOT.

Sneij - Was made invisible by the opposition. He was no better than Guti, just didn't lose the ball as much as Guti did. He too improved when the subs came in.

Diarra - Best player besides Ramos, did his job and well. Assisted Baptista's goal and worked hard and well.

Torres - Lamentable. Like 4x4s always says the guy SUCKS ASS against quicker or fast oppposition. Most of their attack went through his side and Cannavaro had to give up the close FK, which was nearly a goal had Diarra not deflected it off the cross bar. We desperately need Ramos at RB.

Cannavaro - I feel sorry for him. First he has to cover for Salgado and now Torres. Blegh... he tried his best.

Ramos - MOTM, I shouldn't even have to describe what his contribution is. However he helped with the attack (lobs down the field), had great tackles and worked his tail off. I loved the crushing slide tackle he made at midfield to get the ball away from a Betis player.

Heinze - Lol, but I actual prefer young Marcelo over Heinze. However Heinze did defend well but his crossing is no better than Diogo or Cicinho. o_O

    SUBS

Robben - Great sub, even though he didn't look fully conditioned he helped to create the PK Raul took and had a goal ruled offsides. He is definitely an impact player, although when he was taken down it gave me a scare.

Robinho - Great sub, even though I see nobody here commented on his good run. Glad to see his stepovers amount to something other than a turnover. His first touch lit up the game for us too bad his shot after the run didn't go in.

Baptista - Great sub, I was cursing the fact he was brought in. He made one clumsy touch then all of a sudden began controlling the ball better. He had a great bicycle kick assisted by Diarra and I see he's trying to make a good impression. Good for him.

    Other notes:

Before the subs we were ABYSMAL. Thank GOD Schuster subbed when he did, because if he didn't I would of broke a expensive TV.

Higuain is not that good at the right side. He always is trying to get back towards the middle but loses the ball or disappears. He needs to be played more centrally. Saviola is the same (just regarding the left side).

We shouldn't play Raul, Saviola and Higuain at the same time. Too many SS which don't make enough substance.

Does anybody else notice the close relationship between Diarra and Ramos?

WHAT A GOAL!!!! Baptista really burried it and did it with style. Robben was awesome to watch. Robinho provided some spark along with Robben. Higuain was too stale at times. I know I am gonna take some heat for it here but Raul should've burried some of those chances we got. We weren't that bad in terms keeping the game under our control but Betis did have some flashy moments where the game could've easly tilted their way. There was no question about the penalty although the whole didn't even realize the call was given until Robinho scored and the goal was waived in favour of the penalty. But that whole play was created by Robben and oh! what a play that was, how many defenders did take on??

I still prefer Ramos on RB over Torres, but I suppose havign 2 injured CB doesn't help. There wasn't much of an impact from Torres either. Ramos is still the man whether he is on CB or RB.

Its getting there, the team is gelling and Schuster is giving majority of the players opportunity to get some play time which will be vital in latter stages of the sesason. So far so good, Schuster, so far seems to be the right guy for Real.

On your note on Diarra, it should also be pointed out that Diarra has been fasting too. Not to get religious or anything but any man who can fast during the day (no food no fuid) and goes and plays a high tempo football game deserves a whole lot of commendation. By the way, I also agree with your whole take on the game. Good eye.

Then I'm not the only one. I'm constantly worried that he might get injured every time he is taken down.

nice writeup. great work by all the subs and totally agree good for baptista to get that goal. i have immense respect for baptista wanting to prove his worth at RM and this will definitely help. it really seemed like the whole team rallied behind him after the goal - it was almost a mob scene in the celebration. looking forward to this weekend's match and hopefully more time for both robben and robinho on the pitch at the same time

YS, I pretty well agree with most everything you've said. I absolutely loved that sliding tackle Ramos did in the midfield. Definitely a wow moment. But the biggest wow that still has me stunned is Baptista's chilena for a goal (Remember when he attempted that a couple seasons ago and whacked it off the crossbar?)

Diarra and Ramos do seem to work and communicate well together. Was that what you were referring to by "close relationship?"

I was at the Bernabeu tonight. What surprised me was the ovation Baptista got when he was subbed on. It seams the madrilenos really like the guy...

This even makes his effort more remarkable. Almost remarkable to get MOTM...... uh... nope, Ramos was just too good. :D

I hope posters start warming up to him more. Although he lacks the "flash" he is very effective and I think he is proving his worth.

What made it worse was that he just laid there. I think the whole stadium was worried.

The Ramos slide tackle at midfield was great. He cleanly took the ball away then got some of the player, lol.

The bicycle was perfect. Great effort from Diarra and an even better eye by Baptista. I mean the reaction time to do that is ridiculous.

Diarra, Ramos and Canna seem to communicate well together, most likely because of last season. I mean we're pretty solid when Ramos RB, with Canna at CB and Diarra peering over at times.

However what I meant was they have a "friendly" relationship. Like after goals they're always joking together. I remember last year a couple of us thought Ramos was childish for the tap at Diarra for messing up his header, but now I see they're actually buddies. They do that stuff ALL the time on the pitch if you really take notice. The thing is its exclusive with them and nobody else (besides possibly Cassano pre-nutcase).

Bah, admit it you we think alike on alot of things.

    C.Ronaldo
    Kaka
    Formations
    etc..

    Just watching the replay
    First Half thoughts:
YS, i really enjoy your style of post-match reporting, good read...and I must agree that Ramos' midfield crushing of Edu was beautiful!!
Torres looked shaky, and doesn't contribute much to the attack, has something to do with Higuain being stuck in one spot on the wing, Torres can't overlap, so he just sits and waits for a back pass.
Heinze was good enough and looks cool out there, should get better and contribute more in terms of crossing with more time...prefer Marcelo, but like a veteran's savvy for tough matches
I noticed Sneijder doesn't pass with touch that often, most of his passes are blasted..Took a nice free kick saved by the keeper at the bar
Guti needs a rest, looked sloppy, maybe given too much responsibility in terms of creating..move Sneijder to the middle against Getafe.
Diarra was very good, kinda clumsy as is his style of course, but effective.
Saviola disappeared and I fear his stature when we are forced to play long ball makes him invisible
Higuain should be given the opportunity to play as a SS, he'll be much more involved..For YS, I saw him flub a nice opportunity in the box with his left foot which he really should've done better on..echoing the statements of many, he is working hard but is not and wil never be a winger, has a nose for the ball which could be utilized better up top..but we are freakin stacked up top!
Raul ran his a** off and had chances.
Ramos and Canna did very well, other than Canna's duck on Odonker's cross, which caused all kinds of havoc...Casillas did well and saved our butts during that melee in the box
Pretty one-sided really after that half, Betis created a few solid chances towards the end of the half, but we had the majority of the posession..lacked that killer instinct and the attack stalled just outside the box. Better penetration by Sniejder, Higuain or Saviola would've helped. A 0-0 scoreline was fair to me.

    2nd half thoughts to come.

Game is supposed to start now on GolTV.

EDIT: It's actually on in an hour. The TV guide conflicts with the schedule on their website.

Just got to watch the game... I figured this thread would be in riots because Higuain was having a very poor game, imo. He could not get anything going, made a lot of bad passes and fumbling, but maybe everyone was so flat that he wasn't that noticeable.

In general, it was one of those bleh games. We weren't the worst evah, there were some good moments, but there was just something off for most of the game. Like everyone, I was delighted for Baptista, what lightning quick reflexes he had to judge it and slam it home. I think we would feel a lot different about this game (winning on a penalty) if we had not gotten that 2nd goal from him. Robben is just so dangerous when he's on the move, it really did change the game along with Robinho. I did notice that Robben stayed on his feet in a few situations where I was sure he was going to go down.

Ramos was excellent again, seems sooooo comfortable at CB in these last 2 games, much more than last year. I thought Heinze was very good, Canna was good with a couple of peculiar moments and Torres looked rusty, as I expected.

    3 points.
