I just wanted to start a thread for fans travelling to Portland. Feel free to post questions and we will keep you updated on all upcoming info for the matches in Portland. Also check on http://www.soccercityusa.com for info as well --CHEERS
I'll be flying in from Boise, Idaho for the 10/2 and 10/6 games. Any chance that perhaps a block of tix can be set aside for a Sam's Army type of section? Any cheap but decent hotel recommendations in downtown?
Don't know about the block tickets. I believe the Timbers Army will probably try to swipe up a lot in a specific section and we would be happy to have others who aren't opposed to a little singing and standing. As for places to stay, there is a Days Inn downtown on SW 6th Ave that costs somewhere around $50/night if you stay at the right time of year. It is one light rail stop from the stadium and right in the heart of downtown. There is also a youth hostel in NW Portland on NW Glisan I think that is literally a 5 minute walk from the stadium. It is in the trendy part of town and might not be a bad place to crash. Generally speaking the closer to downtown the more expensive the hotel. Our economy sucks so you might be able to find a good rate if you call around. Anything in the downtown area is an easy walk/light rail to the stadium.
Seattle? Salem? Flying in from Des Moines (if we can get tickets). How long a drive is it to Seattle (realistically), we have relatives up there we'd like to visit between games. We also have friends in the Salem area we might visit, what's the travel time from Portland? Thanks!
Seattle It's about a 2.5 - 3 hr drive to Seattle depending on traffic through Olympia and 45- 1 hr to Salem, also depending on traffic.
When I was planning my trip several weeks ago I was also thinking of trying to catch a University of Portland game. Here is their schedule for when the WWC comes into town... http://www.portlandpilots.com/sports/wsoccer/schedule.asp 9/28 - Pacific (2:15pm) 10/3 - at Oregon (7pm) 10/6 - Oregon State (2:15pm) I *may* try to make it down to Eugene. How far is Eugene from downtown Portland? Also...where is the University of Portland in relation to downtown? Does the MAX go by it? I'd like to see the 10/6 game but obviously there is a BIG conflict that day. Maybe the two schools can reschedule for later in the day...like noon or something.
Fear- I thought your first post may have been a typo, but the semi's are on 10/5. From the USSoccer web-site: Oct. 5 W25 vs W27 PGE Park (Portland, Ore.) TBD Oct. 5 W26 vs W28 PGE Park (Portland, Ore.) TBD
Yeah I discovered my mistake last night. I also made this mistake in my previous post regarding University of Portland games. The Pilots play Oregon State on October 5 and not on October 6 like I originally had it.
I would highly recommend a visit to the University of Portland. Merlo Field has one of the best pitches in the US and the stands are right on top of the field. Also getting to see a Clive Charles team live is worth the trip. The university is located on the bluffs of the Willamette River in North Portland, an easy 10-minute drive from downtown. The light rail Max doesn't run there but you can take the #1 bus from the transit mall downtown. It drops you off right at Merlo Field and is about a 20 minute bus ride. Costs is $1.55 one way. Portland to Eugene is about 110 miles and takes no more than 2 hours if there isn't a Ducks or Beavers pointyball game.
Schedule for Portland September 28 Match 23. D4 v D1 at PGE Park, Portland, Oregon Match 24. D2 v D3 at PGE Park, Portland, Oregon Quarter finals October 2 Match 27. 1st C v 2nd D at PGE Park, Portland, Oregon Match 28. 1st D v 2nd C at PGE Park, Portland, Oregon Semi Finals October 5 Match 29. W25 v W27 at PGE Park, Portland, Oregon Match 30. W26 v W28 at PGE Park, Portland, Oregon For the beer lovers, there may be a couple Oktoberfest celebrations around the city.
Did someone say, "Duffs"? Damn. I had just convinced myself not to make a left coast trip. I hadn't considered beer in the original decision. This is one decision to be made without consulting the wife.
Re: Did someone say, "Duffs"? Guess I should probably let everyone know that Portland has something like 36 microbrewies in town. We take our beer, coffee and soccer seriously in these parts. Will post Beerfest info when it becomes available.
tickets, where am I? Alright, purchased my tickets and the Ticketbastard seating chart sucks on-line, can anyone tell me where Section 110, Row C is? Also, anyone that wants to buy my Sept. 28 match tickets I'll sell them cheap, I can't be there for the full week (stupid job) so anyone that wants to go for a World Cup doubleheader experience that weekend can PM me. The Group D final games will be there, which should have China's last game since the US is in Group A. It looks like they'll mail out the tickets in mid-August.
Re: tickets, where am I? I'm in the opposite corner wedge as you in 114. Use this seating chart: http://home.comcast.net/~kurtds2/4.html
does anyone know where section e8 is? it's not on the seating chart. tickets there cost $200+ so they'd better be decent. maybe temporary seating on the far side of the stadium?
From what I have gathered, the south bleacher tickets (section "S", they cost $75 for the three sessions) appear to be the area designated as a supporters section. This will be especially true if the US team plays in the semifinals. This is a temporary bleacher section set away from the normal grandstand so should be a good place to stand, sing, and not annoy other fans.
The south end is selling fast. I just picked up my seats in Row R (they were on D an hour or so ago).
I ended up with $75 seats that are in 103, row U. The $107 seats put you in the same general area (101, to be exact), but row V. I figure that one row isn't worth $32. However, I'm guessing by the map on the Timbers web site, I'm in what would be the "Fred Meyer Family Section". Any of you regular Timber supporters know 1) what this means (I'm guessing no beer) and 2) Assuming that FIFA will trump Timbers management, will any family section rules be in effect anyway? Mucho thanks for the info.
The family section is generally a section reserved for families to sit for a discounted price and where beer is not allowed. I am certain that this won't be the case for the World Cup. I imagine that there will be a lot of families in attendance throughout the park but there won't be one special section. Enjoy your beer and your seats, which aren't the greatest but certainly aren't any worse than the more expensive ones you passed up.
Whenever I have people coming to see me who need a hotel room, I always end up getting my deals on the Portland Visitors Association website, at http://www.pova.org I've heard there are more deals out there this year due to the bad economy & the need to fill the hotel rooms.
Ok, I'm checking out seats as well. Am I correct in assuming the west side is the bench side? I'd really prefer bench side if I can get them. I also assume the park isn't that big so the 200 section won't feel way too far up, correct? thanks!
University Of Portland Schedule Portland has resceduled its games to avoid any conflicts with the Women's World Cup. The changed games are as follows Sept 27th v's Pacific 3:30pm kick off Oct 4th v's Oregon State 3:30pm kick off Ticket prices are very reasonable so why not watch some of the young USA Stars. Lindsey Huie, Angie Woznuk and Stephanie Lopez.
Oktoberfest The best Oktoberfest in the area is Sept. 11-14 in Mt. Angel about an hour south of Portland. More information can be found at www.oktoberfest.org. I grew up in Mt. Angel and most of my family still lives there and are active in the festival as volunteers. And, yep, I have lederhosen. The Mt. Angel Oktoberfest is bit early for the WWC, but there may be other Oktoberfests in Portland sponsored by restaurants or breweries during time of the WWC. I'll keep you posted. Enjoy Portland.
