Re: RSL Makes Roster Deadline Moves: Welcome Yura?

All we'd get out of a player from Arkansas is a leaky spitoon in the locker room and the shame of being the only modern sports organization to have one of its players get busted for running moonshine.

(Note: I grew up in Missouri. Making fun of Arkansas is one of the things we did to forget the fact that we were in Missouri.)

I like this guy. He attacks the goal relentlessly but lacks polish. JK may just be able to help him with his finishing because he has lots of promise. Yura's goal to put the Wizards ahead against Chivas was very audacious.

    RSL gives up:
    • Part of the Freddy Adu replacement allocation
    • Natural third-round selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft
    • Natural first-round selection in the 2009 Supplemental Draft

    KC gives up:
    • Yura Movsisyan
    • A YI slot through the 2009 season

    Who came out ahead?

We won't know until we see what Yura does. I, for one, am excited about the move though.

    YEA!!! WOOHOO!!! FREAKIN' SWEET!:D :D :D

Any hints on who this YI might be that RSL has its eyes on, or will we move a current player from the SI to the YI slot and give us flexibility that way?

Is Movsisyan good on set plays and corners (header because of height)?

I don't think you can really decide until Yura plays for RSL and KC does something with the allocations and draft picks. So right now, RSL came out because we have a player and they don't.

I've actually paid attention to Yura since he joined the league because I have an interest in post-soviet football and also Armenian culture. Honestly though I've never been too impressed. In fact his first year I thought he was downright awful. This year he has improved a lot for sure. He is physical, can sort of hold the ball and hits his shots really hard.

I guess he does give RSL something they've never really had which is a large physical forward who at least has some skill. So in that sense he adds depth and a different look that Kreis can take advantage of in certain situations. I have not been a fan of the "small ball" RSL has always had to play with their forwards. So a new angle shouldn't hurt.

I do in another way get worried by this move though, as it seems to be a continuation a of trend which troubles me. RSL under Kreis has slowly been making acquisitions of solid, dependable players and building depth at key positions such as central midfield and forward. This is fine in principle. If RSL will ever become a good team they need these types of players so I have no problem with Kreis trying to collect a balanced group of role players. But when I hear comment's like "We've been after Yura for a long time" I sort of wonder if Kreis thinks these guys are the answer. These players Kreis has acquired can definitely become vital parts of the machine. But the machine still needs an engine. They need a player who is flat out better than anybody trying to guard him. This can be a forward or a mid. And it doesn't have to be someone who beats you on the ball like Donovan or De Rosario. It can just as easily be someone who beats you off the ball like Ruiz, Eddie Johnson, Taylor Twellman, or Angel. All the good teams have at least one such player. There just aren't any (or extremely few) MLS defenders who can singlehandedly mark any of these guys. They all require help, which opens the game up for everyone else. If the rest of the team is good, they're going to succeed.

It looks to me like Kreis is building the car and then putting in the engine. I guess that's okay, but I have this awful feeling that Kreis might think he's done when he's put a good player at every position and has a few good backups. That will only get you a good team, not a great one. I realize that such a player is not easy to come by, which is why I'm not expressing a criticism of Kreis but just a concern. But RSL had a player in Cunningham who very few MLS defenders could stay with one on one. And they traded him for a stock role player. So I worry that Kreis has the attitude that hard work and commitment are ALWAYS a replacement for talent. The truth is that a balance is needed. One or two very talented players are the engine. The car can only go as fast as the engine can push it. But a finely tuned machine around the car lets the engine reach full potential. That's what RSL needs to take into account, and I hope they are making plans to find that player or players in the offseason.

    WELL...........

We have tons of cap space and some allocation $$ from Adu (a little less now, but inconsequential compared to the cap) for a DP.

RSL was supposed to get Okocha (I hate to hear his name now), but I think a DP move is high on RSL's lists of things to do over the offseason. However, since the formerly mentioned deal fell through, finding a quality DP with only a month left was a task slightly too heruclean for our adept and foresighted FO.

RSL needs some quality offensive talent for a DP, but we also need to boost the defense. We need a lot, and we'll just have to wait and see what happens over the break. Movsisyan is a move in the right direction, although admittedly a(n) healthy Cunningham-type player who got along with Kreis would be better.

Just to let you all know, his one major draw back is that the man doesn't pass, especially inside the offensive third. He puts his head down and goes to goal.

As you folks probably know, Esky is also Armenian and quite proud of his heritage. I wonder what kind of chemistry will develop between the two. BTW, does anyone know if there are other Armenian players in the league.

And that mentality has both won and lost games for us this year. In a couple games, especially at LA and others, his aggressiveness singlehandedly earned us points. He also has looked very flat when starting, and at times too wasteful and selfish for a good team that plays best when everyone is involved.

He'll be closer to his family which I think is in Glendale, and I'm sure he'll enjoy playing with Alecko.

I'd say, for now, it looks like RSL... mostly because a 3rd round draft pick 2 years from now is, well, hard to tangibly value. The Supplemental Draft pick is practically worthless - some people get lucky on them, but that is the EXCEPTION.

So, part of the Adu allocation?? With our cap room, a DP still, and the fact that we can do a lot of offseason shopping means trading some possible value for future, speculative value is not so bad.

Most importantly, he's a decent big body pairing for the all our small guys.

I like this move, if only for the fact that it makes us younger and deeper up top.

    Let's all keep in mind...

    1) We have plenty of cap space and a DP slot to go after one maybe two higher profile players (notice I said highER not High, I don't agree with betting the farm on a David Beckham).
    2) Depth is a good thing. And I for one don't mind having several mid-to-high level players on our team. I bring up the Beckham factor again. One player does not win games and if you blow the bank one 1 or 2 high profile, big salary players it may put butts in the seats initially (see Adu) but the fans in the long run need wins, which requires a solid performance all over the field. Remember last year our offense consisted of getting the ball to Jeff. This year we've seen (with JK's acquisitions) the threat spread around a bit. Which is obviously more difficult to defend than our previous one man (triple teamed) offense.
    3) Is anyone arguing against signing 3 unknown Argentiner players? They've had a huge impact on our level of play, but no one's heard of them!

I applaud JK's pursuit of young unpolished talent. I'd compare his outlook to a savy baseball GM in a small market...see Milwaukee Brewers. Build a solid base of players at mid-level salaries. That way you have decent players all over the field, not just in one position.

Well, given that every player on our team is suspended, Yura should get a start against the Galaxy, presumably with Findley as his striking partner.

If so, there's probably no better MLS back line against which to make his debut. Here's hoping Yura's first RSL match--whenever it is--is as successful as the debuts of several other of our recent signings. A little new competition can only be healthy for the starters up front.

When is RSL going to bring a player or players that can take Popes place?

RSL has enuf players that can play F and M. RSL needs to look for players that can help protect the goal

I disagree with this. I think that even with Pope retiring that the biggest weakness is still a creative midfielder (unless Morales comes around and shows us more in this role than he has to this point.) My opinion is that our starting backline next year will be serviceable, even though we could use more depth.

Like most on the KC board, I am struggling to find the rationale for KC to make this move. If EJ leaves (which sounds probable) it seems that they could use Movsysian in some capacity.

Yura was born in Azberbijan (sp?) but he is Armenian...
I saw him play in Pasadena and know a few guys that played with/against him... The guy is an amazing talent...His name pops up all the time in the Rec-Leagues around here..
He was right under the noses of the Galaxy but they never saw him...which tells you something about the scouting system.
Movsisyan and Eskandarian will make a dynamic duo in RSL... Its (kinda) a shame that Eskandarian has one cap for the US... If both of them could play for the Armenian national team...they would end up as legends in that country.

Looks like you've got the beginnings of an Armenian mafia with him and Esky.

Sorry to pry, and pop into this thread, but did you guys recently drop Chris Lancos? (perhaps to make a space for this pick up?)
