Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov [Riz, I apologize for this while you are trying to be serious, but I just can't resist] Matt, given the image your statement put in my mind, I just hope he doesn't sit down...
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov Maybe he moved there recently
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov I worry for you if those are the images in your mind.
Re: Wash. Post - Stadium comment... I swore to myself I would never come back to this forum but I lied again. Why is suggesting Loudoun County being part of the suburban lunatic fringe (and do I get a card to this club)?? Chicago - suburb Dallas - suburb NYRB - suburb Galaxy - suburb Is Washington DC just a fantastic ********ing city that a suburban location for a stadium cannot be considered?? Don't bother answering because I won't be back to read.
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov Yes you will... You know, the 'I won't ever go to Loudoun County' mantra reminds me of the Philly people who said they'd never go to a game that was played over a river and across their border in South Jersey or the current ones in St. Louis who say that traveling 15 miles over the Mississippi River into a neighboring state just isn't going to happen. For those of us who live in Loudoun County...why isn't driving 45 miles and crossing a river into a different jurisdiction an anathema to us as the reverse seems to be for those living in DC? I completely agree with the lack of Metro argument...but otherwise, WTF?
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov How about the people who live 45 minutes on the other side of DC? Or further? The reason so many of us are pushing for the team to remain in the district, or at least within the beltway, is because it's a CENTRAL location. BFE Loudon County isn't Central to anything except suburban sprawl. I don't even live in the DC area anymore FFS, and I can see this, why can't you? Moving the team outside the beltway, particularly out to Loudon, would be a tremendous detriment to United's support.
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov Bingo. "Central" is the key word. I know that if the stadium were to be built in Loudon County that it would be significantly more difficult to come to games from my house in Annapolis. That doesn't even begin to touch the pain of our fans in the Baltimore area.
Re: Wash. Post - Stadium comment... You forgot the part about holding your breath until you turn blue.
Re: Wash. Post - Stadium comment... I don't know the numbers we had for tonight's match but it was a decent crowd for a Wednesday night. Considering the make-up of the area, where the majority of the work force comes into Washington, a weeknight match can be an after work affair. I know not everyone works in the city but the club is more likely to draw a bigger crowd during the week in the city or within Metro than it would in the outer suburbs. This is especially the case when you consider Loudon and the traffic for just the commuters to get home. This is also the same for the 270 corridor, 95 in either direction and Route 50 if you were looking in Annapolis. So a central location is very helpful with the season ticket packages as it helps create a greater commitment/loyalty to the club. In theory, on weekends it would not have that much of an affect. But a stadium in the outer suburbs of either side of the river would likely reduce the season ticket fan base from the other end. If the numbers could be made up by bringing more fans to the new home base, that may be a factor in the decision. But think of it this way, before the Nats came into town, it was more likely for baseball fans from the Maryland suburbs to purchase season ticket plans for the Orioles than it those from Virginia. I would think that a stadium in Loudon would likely mean that Maryland and DC fans would opt for partial plans or selected matches. And this would be the same for supporters from Alexandria and Arlington. That is my opinion.
Re: Wash. Post - Stadium comment... If by "Suburbs" you mean outside of Wash DC but still inside the beltway, most people don't think of that as "Suburbs" - And this is allegedly Plan B If by "Suburbs you mean outside the beltway, but still inner Fairfax, Montgomery and PG Counties, then thats OK - Still close enough to the beltway for traffic although Metro is unlikely Anything outside of that is not realistic for the bulk of the fan base - If you're harping for Ashburn or Brambleton in Loudon County, then you should also support plans for Frederick, Columbia, Odenton, Davidsonville, Waldorf, LaPlata, Aquia, Stafford or Bealeton
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov WashPo version of event yesterday Kinda funny article. A lot of editorial comment about the quality of the presentation and how the attendees were feeling. Then there was this gem:
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov I really do love Marion. VIVA BARRY!
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov It'd be pretty ironic if the activists lobbying against the stadium scared off United's competition.
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov Priceless. Viva Barry!! I kind of had a feeling it was going to go off....and it did.
Re: Wash. Post - Stadium comment... OK. As others have said, it's an issue of centrality to the region's population in general. DC is center. By moving DC United to a far western suburb, it shifts the center and leaves many regional fans on the periphery and some off the map altogether.
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov is this a bad thing?
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov Could be. Or they're just being extra-cautious.
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov It could mean United may be thinking of taking an alternative approach... Impeach Fenty!
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov As suggested by Alec, it'd even be more ironic if, at the same time, MacFarlane decided the long-haul aspects of the project didn't deliver the required financial return and built the stadium and related development somewhere else inside the Beltway, thus leaving Poplar Point the fallow, abandoned shell of parkland it is now and Fenty hoisted high up on his own petard. And yes, Alec, I do get how important it is for DC United to stay centrally located. Thank you for your kind and considerate approach to making sure of that.
Re: Stadium News and Speculation VIII | Email Fenty at Mayor@dc.gov or adrian.fenty@dc.gov The animosity is really directed at GoDC (whom I'd like to toss in the Anacostia), you just happened to walk through my cross-hairs.
Re: Wash. Post - Stadium comment... Any reasonable discussion of a western location is western Fairfax/eastern Loudoun County (i.e., Herndon, Dulles, Reston area). Along the dulles toll road, at the intersection with Rt. 28 at the location of the baseball VA site - the quarry area northeast of the intersection of Rt. 28 and Dulles toll Road - a large expanse of land with two highway entry points, and...... ...wait for it..... ....a ********ing future metro stop!!!! Let's not forget the immense latino community in Herndon, nearby Sterling, and not so far Leesburg, who I think will more than off set the lose of fanbase from Maryland (sorry guys/gals).
