I will never forget that game i saw at the Checker Dome. St. Louis steamers vs the LA Lazers. that freaking place was rocking. i think the final score was 7-4. That was a long long time ago. Slobo Ilieski was the goalkeeper. Anyone remember that?
One of my weirdest memories of the original St. Louis Steamers was having a rivalry with Wichita. Wings fans would travel to the Arena and hold up banners. It always struck me as comical. I couldn't imagine traveling to Wichita to reciprocate. Agreed, Steamers would not be a good name for an MLS franchise.
I think back to those days of watching the MISL and seeing the sold out crazy games of the St. Louis teams. My Uncle took me to to the soccer park right when it was sort of complete. He walked up to and started talking this guy named Harry. They talked for a while and then finally, my Uncle introduced me to him. He said I would like to introduce you to Harry Keogh. Oh my God. What a gentleman he was. He didn't know me from Adam and he sat there and chatted. What a class guy. It is a freaking crime that you guys don't have a team.
I met Slobo about a year ago, he was working with the team from Yeshiva High School, and I was coaching against them (for Metro High). He was pretty amazing when I was a kid and saw him play. And Harry Keough has reffed several of the girls games I've coached. He is a great guy. Man, St. Louis soccer history is great.
I wonder if the kids Slobo coaches now are aware of what a stud he used to be. I am glad he is still in St. Louis. that is cool. Soccer history and St. Louis do belong in the same sentence. I was born there in 1974 and my parents moved me to Houston in 1976. All my family is still there. I can't wait to share MLS stuff with you guys.
man, this forum is a hoot. glad i stumbled in here. i hope you guys get a team, because your BS forum could set a new precedence for derailing threads with bickering. should make for great, late night reading. oh, and united is taken (unless you guys want to be the 'other' united, that's cool too)
I'm glad you guys created the idea of calling a soccer team united. Oh, and the DC United crest looks just like the one on a Germany t-shirt that I bought at the 2nd round world cup match in Chicago in 1994 between Germany and Belgium. Here's hoping that we get to bicker in the MLS teams forum in the near future.
Well one of the economic guys from Collinsville gave us the team name at the meeting. We will be the Joggernauts. That's right Jogger not Jugger.
I say we just give them all blue shirts, call them St. Louis FC, and call them the Blues. I hate Chelsea, but I like this idea. Either that or Arsenal St. Louis. (screw colorado)
Take care of that T-shirt, it must be worth a fortune... But jokes aside, don´t people see that the DCU Eagle is asian in design? German Holy Roman Imperial Eagle... DCU with an asian touch..
Yeah, let's name our team after one of the clubs involved in the most disgraceful cheating scandal in footballing history. Let's associate ourselves with them. Italian football is the scum of the footballing world; the violence, the horrible stadiums with no attendance, the cheating, the racism. No thanks. If we're going to go european with this name, let's go English, since it's the same damned language.
The Italian league has it's share of problems, but name a European league that doesn't. Let's not forget that Hooliganism was once the norm at football grounds in England and several incidents proved just how bad it was. Racism is out of control in several countries- no matter what FIFA says. I don't think the name AC St. Louis (though not my favorite) would be a nod to AC Milan anymore than St. Louis United would be aligned with Man U.
First off I never said AC was anyway related to AC Milan, and nothing is wrong with Serie A or their fans.
and why would we want to call our team an 'Athletic Club'? When do we ever call our American soccer teams that?
Missouri Athletic Club , It not uncommon, Its not over the top, don't be afraid of what you don't know and we would be called AC not Athletic Club
Depends on the club, but for Milan (as referenced a couple posts above) it's "Associazione Calcio" (or however the Italian is spelled) as in "Association Soccer" ... or I guess "Association Football" if we must ... hell, what continent are we on now?
AC is what people will relate the team to if it has that name, regardless of your intention. Secondly, yes, there are unbelievable problems with Serie A and their fans. Have you lived under a rock for a few decades or something? Their fans riot more than any other, are racist, etc. Example: read this article. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sa=N
SamLakey, stick to the Premier League. Serie A is and entertaining league that I watch and enjoy. I remember seeing a video of a soccer match between England and Ireland, in this game the English started a riot just so the didn't have to lose to the Irish thats RACISM look it up. stop making this a issue on a Name and Jersey thread
What? Are you really suggesting that the English are racist against the Irish? Is that what you're suggesting? And then, after you say such a thing, you say that I should "look it up"? I'm really struggling to grasp this. Not only the statement that, because the English didn't want to lose to the Irish, they made up racist chants about the Irish; but also the implication that you KNOW what "racism" is because you understand, and I don't, that English people starting riots against the Irish is racism... What, that they were WHITER than the English? This is all very confusing. I'm not making it an issue; I'm making the point that, if we were to be named AC St. Louis, then people would obviously associate our name with AC Milan, just like everybody associates Real Salt Lake's (ridiculous) name with Real Madrid. And since AC Milan and their league, along with the league's fans, are a constant detriment to the sport (keep in mind I never suggested that the English were great, just that they're MUCH, MUCH better than the Italians), I would rather it not be AC St. Louis. Oh, and Irish is NOT a race. :-|
