good lord, they're not building a stadium in St. Louis, they're building a city! that is an amazing plan. just give season's passes the residents of the 1600 housing units for the first couple of years and you'll be guaranteed a decent crowd.
It's not in St Louis; it's in Collinsville, Illinois across the Mississippi River from St Louis, 15 miles East. I would have no problem driving 15 miles to see a soccer game but into another state and across the Mississippi River might be an issue. I bet people from St Louis hardly ever go to Collinsville. http://maps.yahoo.com/;_ylc=X3oDMTE...,+IL&trf=0&lon=-90.105915&lat=38.631891&mag=6
Interesting perspective. I drive 45 miles each way, over the Potomac River and into a different jurisdiction (DC) for United games. Should we ever get a stadium at Poplar Point I'd be crossing two rivers to get to it. I guess the difference is that we're so used to seeing the DC and its surrounding states as a whole that we don't have a mindset that we're entering strange territory. Now, if our team were to move to Baltimore, I would completely understand.
St. Louis is a very strong soccer community. They will have no problem crossing a river into IL for the game. They drive a lot further than that to go to another major city. Building in Collinsville will give the people a reason to go there and it's likely that many people live there and work in St. Louis. By the map, it appears to be a bedroom community for St. Louis or in other words, just a suburb. A great plan and good for them!
