i would think you would like something colorful to look at after the how many games with out a goal streak your team has.
At first I thought the idea was kind of nice. But, now I do wonder if having a logo on the field will distract from watching the actual game in progress.
They get to use those nets because they are the current MLS champions- also why they get to use Gold Balls at home instead of the MLS standard Blue Balls. Not sure if any team will be allowed to use two tones or a "design" like the Hoops even if they win the Cup
Re: team logos Isn't this league already Americanized with the XTREME!!! kinda XFL feel to some teams? The Wizards are pretty "NFL'd" enough, try to keep the game simple and stick to its roots, we are not trying to attract NFL fans. What's next, cheerleaders and motivational music when a play is buidling up like in the NBA?
Exactly right. Why do some people want to "jazz things up" or "Americanize" things so much that they ruin it and turn it into a carbon copy of everything else that has been "jazzed up" or "Americanized"? If I want to watch gridiron with crazy paint jobs on the field I'll watch the NFL or NCAA. If I want more gratuitous stuff painted on the playing surface, there's the NBA. Why is it so terrible that soccer is different? That's what I like about this game. It's not a bad thing to be different. Soccer doesn't need to be "fixed". Leave it alone, dammit. And as someone else pointed out, FIFA may be corrupt, but it ain't toothless, that's for damn sure, as history has proven on a number of occasions. The internet forum equivalent of a temper tantrum won't change these facts. Sneering won't change these facts. And thank goodness for that. It's nice to have a worldwide sport where everyone is playing by the same rules. Basketball can't say that. Baseball can't say that. The many other varieties of football can't say that (except within their own codes, and sometimes not even then). Let's be happy with the little historical accident that is association football, rather than wishing we were "blessed" with the "freedom" to tinker.
Well, it would be even better if teams had two separate lineups for attacking and defending. Think about it, every time there's a transition from attack to defense, teams would switch out the whole roster, opening up a few seconds for advertising, and who doesn't need a little break from the game to watch some beer commercials?
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. No pitch needs logos. There is nothing about a logo that will attract people who are afraid of a "fern" sport, and people who already love the Game shouldn't feel the need to change anything about it anyhow.
i'm nooot really big on the logo at midfield i don't really think that it's needed, but i do think it'd be cool for mls jersey's to sport the teams crest at the bottom of numbers like the EPL or La Liga do. ex. the new Man U jerz with the lion at the bottom of the 7 (Cristiano Ronaldo of course) ... no mo
As far as I know, those leagues put the LEAGUE logo on the bottom of the numbers (ex. the lion representing the PL on the bottom of the numbers) And they do that here. Every MLS jersey has the league logo on the bottom of every number.
New England have their team logo at midfield tonight. It's hideous. And even worse, it's their NFL team logo.
How? For football, the necessities are a pitch and a ball. Period. No logo is a necessity, unless you're referring to revenue- then you might have a point.
I don't think it's really necessary to have a team's logo in the center circle ala the NFL, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. I just don't think it would work at present time. Maybe when all the teams have their own stadiums then sure. Why not. Try it for a season. Afterall it's just paint.
you can't just change the rules. then every league in the world would have to do that, its just not practical. besides being a rubbish idea
I actually like this idea. However, I would only put the home teams logo in the center circle of the field. I think that would be pretty cool.
These things have already been tried before! Logos at center field, the penalty area a different color all done before look it up! NASL check it out for yourselves! http://www.tv4u.com/show-large-vide...50&t=Washington vs. Ft. Lauderdale&cat=Sports
I think the graphics on the field during NCAA final fours with each college's name in a different area look cool. But I don't know if that's the same topic as huge logos in the center circle
I'm a little amused by the positive reception some are giving to the idea of adding a logo to the field. The first post I ever made to a soccer board (rec.sport.soccer in 1998) was to suggest something similar, although I was thinking maybe just a modest team logo in the area between the center-line and penalty area, near the right sideline, where it wouldn't cover up any markings. I was immediately flamed for suggesting something that would "commercialize" the game (which I found odd considering the players are walking billboards). But I don't think it's a good idea anymore. I think we all agree that we would not want any advertising, just the team logo, right? Well, what about the logo for Red Bull NY? Isn't that advertising the drink? If we decide that's okay, how long before other corporate logos get "incorporated" into team badges? (And it's not just this league. Bayer Leverkusen's badge is an Aspirin tablet...) ------RM
You may not appreciate the jokes. But the ridiculous idea of putting logos on the field is no different. If MLS starts heading back down the road of bastardizing the game in an effort to lure in people who don't care about the game, count me out. So really, the jokes about the scoring and the shoulder pads and all of that are absolutely no worse than the original point of this thread -- which would be the funniest joke of all, in a sad way, if the people who thought it up weren't serious.
