That's a classic. It's one of my favorite Monty Python skits.

(Aerial view of München Olympic stadium)

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
Good afternoon, and welcome to a packed Olympic stadium, München...

    CAPTION:
    INTERNATIONALE PHILOSOPHIE
    Rückspiel

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
...for the second leg of this exciting final.

(German philosophers jog out of the dressing room)

And here come the Germans now, led by their skipper, "Nobby" Hegel. They must surely start favourites this afternoon; they've certainly attracted the most attention from the press with their team problems. And let's now see their line-up.

    CAPTION:
    DEUTSCHLAND
    1 LEIBNITZ
    2 I. KANT
    3 HEGEL
    4 SCHOPENHAUER
    5 SCHELLING
    6 BECKENBAUER
    7 JASPERS
    8 SCHLEGEL
    9 WITTGENSTEIN
    10 NIETZSCHE
    11 HEIDEGGER

(High shot of Germans jogging onto pitch)

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
The Germans playing 4-2-4, Leibniz in goal, back four Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer and Schelling, front-runners Schlegel, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche and Heidegger, and the mid-field duo of Beckenbauer and Jaspers. Beckenbauer obviously a bit of a surprise there.

(Greek philosophers, all in togas, jog from the dressing room)

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
And here come the Greeks, led out by their veteran centre-half, Heraclitus.

    CAPTION:
    GRIECHENLAND
    1 PLATO
    2 EPIKTET
    3 ARISTOTELES
    4 SOPHOKLES
    5 EMPEDOKLES VON ACRAGA
    6 PLOTIN
    7 EPIKUR
    8 HERAKLIT
    9 DEMOKRIT
    10 SOKRATES
    11 ARCHIMEDES

(High shot of Greeks jogging onto pitch, kicking balls about etc)

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
Let's look at their team. As you'd expect, it's a much more defensive line-up. Plato's in goal, Socrates a front- runner there, and Aristotle as sweeper, Aristotle very much the man in form. One surprise is the inclusion of Archimedes.

(An oriental referee, holding a large sandglass, walks down the centre line, flanked by two linesmen with haloes)

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
Well here comes the referee, K'ung fu-tsze (Confucius), and his two linesmen, St Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas.

(Referee spots the ball and the captains shake hands)

And as the two skippers come together to shake hands, we're ready for the start of this very exciting final. The referee Mr Confucius checks his sand and...

    (referee blows his whistle)

    they're off!

(The Germans immediately turn away from the ball, hands on chins in deep contemplation)

Nietzsche and Hegel there. Karl Jaspers number seven on the outside, Wittgenstein there with him. There's Beckenbauer. Schelling's in there, Heidegger covering. Schopenhauer.

(Pan to the other end, the Greeks also thinking deeply, occasionally gesticulating)

And now it's the Greeks, Epicurus, Plotinus number six. Aristotle. Empedocles of Acragus and Democratus with him. There's Archimedes. Socrates, there he is, Socrates. Socrates there, going through.

(The camera follows Socrates past the ball, still on the centre spot)

There's the ball! There's the ball. And Nietzsche there. Nietzsche, number ten in this German side.

    CAPTION:
    DEUTSCHLAND - GRIECHENLAND 0 : 0

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
Kant moving up on the outside. Schlegel's on the left, the Germans moving very well in these opening moments...

Well right now we're going back to the Olympic stadium for the closing minutes of the Philosophy Final, and I understand that there's still no score.

(On the pitch, a German is remonstrating with the referee)

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
Well there may be no score, but there's certainly no lack of excitement here. As you can see, Nietzsche has just been booked for arguing with the referee. He accused Confucius of having no free will, and Confucius he say, "Name go in book". And this is Nietzsche's third booking in four games.

(We see a bearded figure in a track-suit is warming up on the touch-line)

And who's that? It's Karl Marx, Karl Marx is warming up. It looks as though there's going to be a substitution in the German side.

(Marx removes the track-suit, under which he is wearing a suit)

Obviously the manager Martin Luther has decided on all-out attack, as indeed he must with only two minutes of the match to go. And the big question is, who is he going to replace, who's going to come off. It could be Jaspers, Hegel or Schopenhauer, but it's Wittgenstein! Wittgenstein, who saw his aunty only last week, and here's Marx.

(Marx begins some energetic knees-up running about)

Let's see it he can put some life into this German attack.

(The referee blows his whistle; Marx stops and begins contemplating like the rest)

Evidently not. What a shame. Well now, with just over a minute left, a replay on Tuesday looks absolutely vital. There's Archimedes, and I think he's had an idea.

    ARCHIMEDES
    Eureka!

(He runs towards the ball and kicks it)

    FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR
Archimedes out to Socrates, Socrates back to Archimedes, Archimedes out to Heraclitus, he beats Hegel .

(who, like all the Germans, is still thinking)

Heraclitus a little flick, here he comes on the far post, Socrates is there, Socrates heads it in! Socrates has scored! The Greeks are going mad, the Greeks are going mad. Socrates scores, got a beautiful cross from Archimedes. The Germans are disputing it. Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination, and Marx is claiming it was offside. But Confucius has answered them with the final whistle! It's all over! Germany, having trounced England's famous midfield trio of Bentham, Locke and Hobbes in the semi-final, have been beaten by the odd goal, and let's see it again.

(Replay viewed from behind the goal)

There it is, Socrates, Socrates heads in and Leibnitz doesn't have a chance. And just look at those delighted Greeks.

(The Greeks jog delightedly, holding a cup aloft)

There they are, "Chopper" Sophocles, Empedocles of Acragus, what a game he had. And Epicurus is there, and Socrates the captain who scored what was probably the most important goal of his career.

I've yet to make it to Germany the first time, sadly. I really want to, but finding the time and the money to do so make it somewhat difficult. :(

At least my German will be alot better by the time I can go there.

Well, the best time for me to travel in the near future would be around Christmas, but of course the Bundesliga in the midst of their winter break then. If I have enough money, I might just end up going to Blackburn again.

I'd have to say marching into and out of the stadium when we played Italy. The U.S. fans were amazing. We sang some great songs, chants that weren't boring like you hear in the U.S. The American fans were having such a great time & marched into the stadium with so much energy. After tying the Italians with almost our whole team red-carded (sorry for the exaggeration), we left that stadium as proud as we entered, even prouder!

The Italians at that point were speechless. The Americans chanted......"You might've won if we had seven, you might've won if we had seven......". We felt as if we had just won the game, considering we played a bunch of pus..es that should've entered the Summer Olympics with their diving techniques.

Anyway, that was one of the many highlights of our World Cup experience. We took our 3 sons & still talk about this trip on a regular basis.

The partying in Cologne was probably the 2nd best. Partying our first day we arrived on June 9 in Cologne with a bunch of drunk Englishmen & Swedes was a blast!!

I'll think of more later, but it's been over a year & my memory is getting bad (not to mention I was intoxicated almost the entire time we were in Germany).:D

I also enjoyed party with a banch of Englishmen and Swedes..it was the best game in Cologne....it was big party...I had tickets for the game...there was very big party on this day...Germany won on this game...and England-Sweden fans celebrated as well...it was funny place....Cologne rocked..

one of my sad memories is that one of my best american friend who was in Germany during the world cup and who promissed me to meet me in Cologne and I organized everything for him and his family..simply did not come...he changed his plans...probably his wife was jealously:)...it was sad...because I had great plans for him for Cologne.

and the most sad moment...Italy-Germany game..we lost in last 2 minutes....hm...we could have win the world cup..if these two minutes and these two scores in last two minutes had not happended.....

My wife was convinced I was about to start a riot because I kept asking the Italians (in my bad Italian) how much the referee cost.

Hey I've really been thinking about S.A. Would anyone give me a good idea of what expenses I should consider. How much money would be necessary in order to enjoy my time there well. I have never traveled as I'm only 19 but me and my friends really want to go to S.A. If anyone can give me an average of what they spent all together in Germany let me know please. You can PM me if you want to keep it private.

I actually travell a lot...and visited many countries..however, during the world cup in Germany I had an advantage - live in Cologne area, one of hosting cities...having family in Munich...another hosting city....so I did not spend so much money.......

however another advice for you...i think you can not compare South Africa with Germany...I think costs for Africa would be different...Euro is also stronger than Dollar and it makes travelling to Europe more expansive for you Americans....i hope someone here will help you...

if you have plans to travel to Germany or Europe, I can help you....but not with South Africa..

Sadly the players don't seem to agree that this is a classic fixture have you seen the list of players who were healthy for there clubs and won't play on wednesday for both countries. Sadly it almost makes more sense to do away with friendlies and just have week short training camps instead.

As for memories of the world cup sadly I couldn't make the trip (my school district didn't end till almost the end of June) but the best memory has to be Italy-US and the crowd the one moment that sticks in my head is watching the match on TV and an Italian corner and seeing the american fans in the corner diving and giving him the buisness it was GREAT. I diffenetly felt proud to be an american that day. THose of you who were there awesome job.

it depends on what activities are required for you to enjoy time. budgets prolly ran from $3500 - $10,000 depending on the class of accomodations, number of matches attended, amount of drinking etc. south africa, you'll be 22 and hopefully graduation from college. see if you can nag your rents to pick up part of the trip as a grad gift. Start saving 1500 a year now and you'll have a pretty kick ass time.

it was very diplomatic answer...but not right...

Germany actually did not lose against England in England for more than 30 years..
the final game at old Wembley Stadium was game against Germany....we won
and the opening game at new Wembley stadium was with Germany...and Germans won.
I think Englishmen must be schocked
it was only friendly game..but between England and Germany actually does not exist
"friendly" game..it is always game about prestige.
hm...it must be big pain for England....to lose home at new WEmbley stadium and this against German B-team (many top German players did not play....like Ballack, Klose, Frings etc.)...actually for some german players it was debut like for Pander (scored goal).

    hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
    I´m over happy today
