Re: Soccer on Canadian TV pt. 2

Just to add my 2 cents (if anybody is still reading). I typically lurk on this forum as I find more (marginally albeit ;)) insightful discussion on the Vs board.

    a) Sure this is a democracy, but just as the Prime Minister doesn't do exactly what everyone thinks (s)he should do, the moderators are entrusted to have forsight to protect certain values associated with the forum, such that a vocal majority doesn't overrun a less vocal minority.

    b) A thread for discussing which networks are covering what is a good idea and helpful since these are issues unique to Canadian soccer fans.

    c) But yeah, EPL discussion belongs in the EPL forum.

    d) Canadian soccer supporters (ie, those that support Canadian players and Canadian teams) often have a sort of inferiority complex (I admit I do from time to time). This stems from the fact that we typically don't garner respect from other footballing nations, but also from the fact that a lot of 1st/2nd/3rd generation Canadians have a Eurosnob mentality and tend to support 'their team' rather than care about Canada (in soccer terms). A good way to piss a Canadian soccer supporter off is to say that there aren't any good Canadian players playing in the UK, or elsewhere for that matter.

    e) This isn't to say that Cdn soccer supporters don't follow the EPL - on the contrary, many have very strong affiliations with English clubs - they just know to discuss it where it belongs.

Of course, the natural problem with internet forums is that it is a lot easier to sound nasty and insulting, and thus disagreements degenerate into flame wars.

I look forward to more interesting discussions on Canadian soccer ...

    LOL

Well, as a good citizen, I went on the Canadian thread to discuss Canadian soccer. It was kind of like going to the annual meeting of the Apathy Society. And heaven forbid you criticize any aspect of the national program (if there is one). But this is the biggest problem we have in this country - we refuse to discuss the long list of problems with organized (and I use that term loosely) soccer in Canada. All they want to discuss is the progress of an obscure player in the Danish Third Division. Sending players to the lower divisions of the European leagues is not going to help our national program. Does England select anyone from Division II to play on the national team?

Well, technically, England did play David Nugent in a Euro Qual against Andorra. (He came on as a late sub). At the time, he was playing for Preston North End. But that's more exception than rule, I suppose. Also, a little OT.

Back on topic, it looks like FSWC is planning on airing some live Serie A this season.

Actually, we've had many threads dedicated to problems with soccer in Canada, and have no problems critisizing our sorry excuse for an FA. If you have some constructive comments on how we can better the sport in this country, that's great! Then you'd be talking about Canadian soccer ...

Not to nitpick, but Preston North End is playing in the Championship, which is the second tier of English football. When I said Division II, I meant the 4th tier.

Ahh, my mistake. I took Division II to mean 2nd tier.

I see a lot of personal discussion, and thread deterioration here, guys. Seems like "a lame way to circumvent the intent of the forum". Assuming that you apply your own rules to yourselves, you should go and start your own forum on these personal topics elsewhere, before the thread deteriorates any further.

I didn't know that being a fanatical EPL supporter also renders one clueless. If you don't like talk of Canadian soccer in a Canadian forum (for the 100th time) please read this post (if you can comprehend simple sentences) and post here

Gordon, I'm was trying to let it go but these EPL clowns are starting to get annoying. I just see whining about the fact they are too lazy to go to the EPL forum.

Further to that I've just been reading the sacred EPL/TV thread. While a few are trying to adhere to the intent of the thread, there are others spewing anti-Canada stuff there. That definitely does not belong in that thread. TV channels and game times, that's it.

Sorry EPL boys the anti Canada stuff is going too far. You are going against the intent of the thread and the forum. Right is on my side (not that that matters) Maybe it's time you guys got a taste of your own medicine, you had a chance to keep your precious thread. Keep up the anti Canada stuff (in a Canadian forum) and I'll do my damndest to kill that thread. Couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?

Ol' Joe Mac is warming up the flame thrower. :)

I make jokes about Canada. Like the jokes about how our navy is 2 guys, a fishing boat and a rifle. Or I say our air force is a couple aircraft that were used in WWI.

I do sometimes insult how "good" we are at soccer, and some other sports.

I hope you do not believe that does not make me a patriot. I will cheer for Canada, in anything, until the day I die. Even if they suck (The one exception being the toronto maple leafs).

Now I haven't actually posted anything in that thread about Canada's soccer system. But I would like to point out that part of being Canadian is being able to criticise yourself. They have every right to say that we suck at soccer, though I think it's best if it's:
a: in a seperate post from the TV thread
b: constructive criticism rather then just insults.

Not a truer word spoken. However...

There is nothing wrong with dissent, but while not a forum offense, people have to realize why these forums came together. They came together because a group of generally like minded people enjoyed talking about and promoting the Canadian soccer scene. We are pro-Canadian soccer,

I have yet to see a forum begun and totally dedicated to Canadian soccer haterz (unfortunately of whom there seem to be many). Some of these newbies seem to think dissent is not allowed. Because the Canadian soccer supporter base is so small, it has to keep vocal just to survive.

We are not so stupid not to see the many issues and problems facing Canadian soccer. But when you see the same negative comments and comments that aren't even well informed such as Golaras it gets your back up. Nothing wrong with criticizing but at least get the facts straight.

I have found that the majority of the posters in both the TV thread and the short lived thread on the English Leagues to be courteous and respectful of the purpose and intent of the forum once this was clarified. I am very impressed that some of them took the intiative to find a win-win solution and to do so in a manner that respected the rules of Big Soccer in terms of using this site. A few are pushing back. This is normal. Most, perhaps all, of them are/were new to the forum, have no understanding of the history of the forum in terms of the various battles with trolls and people intent upon wreaking havoc with this (and other) boards. Their intentions were genuine and innocent enough so the reaction, which was largely forged by past experiences and not this particular occasion, would seem excessively strong to them. Some reacted accordingly. One or two have not yet let go and are still around to get a few last digs in.

So I'd encourage everyone to just let it go, ignore things that irritate for a couple of days and see where we end up.

    You're new, right?

    OK...deep breath....

The idiot that I will not name was cut from one, ONE youth team. He had ample time and opportunity to make the right choice regarding his national team play. Instead he lied about his intentions and sold himself and this country out.

So, with all due respect, take your defense of the one that I will not name, and, well, dispose of it. The one I will not name is not a popular figure on Canadian boards, mostly because he's British now. Just ask him.

And how ****** hard is it to understand that a Canadian soccer forum is for talking about Canadian soccer?

Re: Soccer on Canadian TV pt. 2

Absolutely nothing has been lost except a few posters who never contributed to the Canadian focus of the forum and tried to shift it to an EPL board of which there is already one at BigSoccer.

It might have been different had a few of you contributed to the Canadian focus of the forum and not treated it with derision ie Canadians in UK etc. Therefore it is no loss at all.

Where are my manners? Pardon me about my lack of sentimentality regarding your sanctimonious swan song.

Great, I'll take pleasure in helping promote your site. Best of British luck, as they used to say in the old war movies.

And seeing as its mandate is An open forum for football fans in Canada and around the world to discuss the beautiful game in all it's glory you don't mind if we visit and talk about Canadian soccer do you?
