Oh, I know about the '98 games. I went to both of them. They were at Zephyr Field. I got such a rush going. I felt as giddy as I did going to my first New Orleans Saints game when I was 13 years old a bazillion years ago. But you're right, MLS will never be in New Orleans.
I was there as well I was at the first Gamblers game back in 1993... against Claudio Reyna and the U23's or U20's. We lost 2-0 and the game was called due to lightning... good times.. good times.
From what i read and heard the hispanic population boomed due to all the construction jobs that opened up to rebuild the region. but will they stick around who knows. Apparently lot of discrimination going on. but i agree i would love to go down there for a game.
I'll be going back down there for a week starting this weekend to do some more clean-up work. It can't be in that good of shape.
Thanks for going down there and cleaning up. The 9th ward is still awful from what I've heard. if you have the opportunity: Travel to Metairie and find a restaurant called Drago's. Fantastic food, decent prices. The owner/manager was in fantasty leagues with me and shot hoops with me as well. Great guy. Fantastic options: Char-broiled Oysters - favorite of Drew Brees. Entré - I love Drumfish Tommy. Eat well.
I lived in Metairie when I was a kid and then all last summer doing cleanup work. Find any restaurant or business and spend some coin with them. It will help. Is Drago's off Vets? I usual hit International Steak and Ale for watching games.
Drago's is on N.Arnault, two blocks from Lakeside, and maybe 3 long blocks off Vets. I think if you took 34h (?) Street (Post office, Morning Call - Mall), crossed Severn, take a left at N.Arnault, Drago's is on your right. I'm hungry already.
New Orleans could possibly be a good fit for an MLS team. I don't think just jumping in there would be beneficial though. Here's an idea: what if the Houston Dynamo (nearest MLS team) played a couple "home" games there for a couple seasons, to gauge the level of support in the city. That would actually be doable.
I still say we were robbed. Should have been a PK for us, plus they called a goal offside when it was clearly not. ROBBERY! We had a little joke "Ali Zahali giveth, Ali Zahali taketh away". I don't remember if he was the ref that night, but it reminded me of it. == Dynamo to play in Houston: I don't think that is good for Houston to do. What I would like to see is Houston to play a friendly in NOLA against a European team.. any team, have a sponsor put up $250,000 winner take all, and let see how that goes. Plus the Hornets would need to leave town.
I really don't see that working. Clubs really don't like playing "home" games. Plus, there's a big difference attendance-wise between a few matches vrs. week in week out.
yea, i agree. the best thing to do might be hype the PDL teams and then bring in a bigger team or two for exhibition. MLS only works in NOLA in one of the smaller, more intimate stadiums in MLS. I don't see a Popular Point project going up any time soon.
But now that you mention it - why not? Wouldn't now be the perfect time for someone to come in and propose such a venture?
If this were to really happen (and I personally think it could), here are two concerns: (1) How important is a strong soccer tradition to MLS franchise success? (2) Wouldn't there have to be a retractable roof of some sort for the field?
Hey, I just got back from Lousiana yesterday. Unfortunatly, we were in the southwest part and we never got into New Orleans. We worked in the Lake Charles/Camron region, so I don't really have much of an idea of how NO looks now
Wife goes back in two weeks, I go back in September. I'm sure MLS in NOLA is 10 years away or until the Hornets move and Rita Benson falls in love with Becks.
Kansas City's got plenty of black people. the reason ethnicity is overrated in these discussions is that white people are more likely to be able to afford tickets (in most cities, Atlanta being the most glaring exception), regardless of what sport we're talking about. black people in kc go to more royals games than any other sport. why? because it's 8 dollars.
There is only one place to go to watch footy (both breeds) in NOLA and that is Finn McCools on Banks street. Tomorrow should be a really fun day Come on You Irons!!!!! They are in no rush as we are all still wondering how the city will be by then, its getting better, but there is a long way to go. If we could get rid of the muppets running the town and state, things would look very good but as things stand they are doing their level best to destroy us. (that is a really nice way of stating that by the way, I would probably get banned from BS if I said what I really feel) I don't agree with the Netballers having to leave though, a local business man just purchased 26% of them and is looking for a complete buy-out. He was quoted as saying "S East LA has been good to me and my family, now I'm going to do good for s East LA." I would not be surprised if he and his group have something to do with an MLS team in NOLA in the future. To what extent, I won't guess but even if it was just helping with the stadium it would be good. P.S. Don't work or own Finn's, its just a great place with alot of great people who are very passionate about football. Hope to see some of you there.
Thanks for the link. Good to know that some deep pockets are still in the area. I still think someone should see about Rita Benson meeting Becks, then it would happen
The Hornets moving is on the cards, Shinn is a slimy, slimy bastard. He was in talks with Oklahoma City until the NBA slapped him on the wrist behind the scenes.
