On another note f*** ticketmaster and all their convenience charges

A 10 dollar ticket cost me close to 16 bucks.

Oh well that one half I went to was worth it.

Good win, nice home crowd, great Richmond support -- here's a couple of random things I was thinking about the game:

Santi was horrible pretty much the entire game, no surprise he was subbed off. But as hard as it was to do worse than him, Long achieved it. He was atrocious.

I like Little Maher's game at times but he is really indecisive sometimes and it nearly caused big trouble for us a couple of times.

If Steele had been anybody else, he probably would've been gone with Santi in the first wave of substitutions. But you have to leave him on because he can produce great things out of nowhere and he proved his worth on the goal and in a couple of other good moments in the 2nd half.

Finally, I really like Bailey. It's obvious he's a new player and the chemistry just isn't there at times, but he's definitely an upgrade over Maher.

Steele or Carrieri men of the match easily...they played great...

Great keeping from McClellan again, great to see that wall again..

Rather small crowd is dissapointing...but it was hot and you know. So it will be interesting to see what happens next round

I didn't know if they would sell them after the 2nd half started. And I wasn't able to call them.

Anyone want to help me out and tell me where the offsides was on their goal that was called back? I'm pretty sure we had somebody standing in our goal.

Remembered something else that I wanted to say on here -- wtf was Maher doing giving them the ball back for a deep throw-in after they had kicked it out because of injury and then we pressured them when they threw it back in? Digusting lack of sportsmanship. I can take the silly tackles, pointless shoving matches, constant dissent to officials, but come on, you have to draw the line somewhere JailHawks.

I just saw it live and haven't watched a replay but I believe their goal scorer was offside b/c McClellan was further upfield than he was. In that situation, two defenders must be behind the offensive player when the pass it hit.
I'm sure one could find the official FIFA wording online.

to be onsides you must be behind the 2nd to last defender, including the keeper

richmond fans can complain all they want(not that they are), but McClellan was out and their 'goal-scorer' was only infront of one defender, therefore offsides

    edit: from fifa
    LAW 11 – OFFSIDE
    Offside Position
It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
    • he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
    second last opponent
A player is not in an offside position if:
    • he is in his own half of the fi eld of play or
    • he is level with the second last opponent or
    • he is level with the last two opponents

Crap, forgot about keeper as the 2nd defender. Good reminder before the fall officiating season kicks off

what about balls cleared after the crossed the goal-line? That's where we felt robbed. I will concede the off-side call (since I didn't see it thanks to the pigeon), but it looked like we should have had an equalizer in the last minute.

Wish we were in the same division, this could have been quite a good rivalry.

oh yea, i wish you guys played D1, we could use another team close enough to make away trips to...you guys are a VERY skilled team, Burke stood out for me....he is a great player.

Good luck with the rest of the season guys

Burke has matured well over the last few seasons. He used to be a guy who was all tricks and dribbling but then nothing would come of it. Now he's much more the team player, making some great balls to set up the rest of the team.

I think Worthen made a big difference in the second half, he is as skillful on the ball as we Kickers fans remember (and very hard to beat in the air).

Our fans were fantastic last night, we need to somehow transfer that energy and passion to our lackluster atmosphere at home. Cramming us all into one section really helped. Plus you have a great stadium that is really close to the action.

I was impressed by the size and spirit of the Richmond section--very positive and energetic to the end. And of course the Depot held their own in Sec 204 as well.

The game was a bit of a reverse of other RailHawk matches I've seen this season. I expect the defense to be rock-solid, but I thought McClellan was a bit shaky--and twice was saved by his defenders. The offense is usually short on quality chances, but I thought produced better than the earlier matches I've seen. Edozian has turned it up a notch, and Bailey is a big help.

Sure hope the Revs win tonight and come to Cary in September!

your keeper should have been sent off for picking up a ball that was cleared off the line by the defender with his feet. It was plain to see. But what hurts the most is the almost countless breakaways that we couldn't finish. You guys get like 1 and make it count.

    Huh?

First of all, picking up a backpass is not a sending off offense. If the play you're talking about is the one I'm thinking about, I think it's hard to seriously consider it a backpass when it was clear the defender's priority was clearing his line, not trying to make a pass to the keeper. That's a tough call for the ref.

Worst case, it's a yellow to McClellan and an indirect free kick, but that's a tough sell.

The real difference as you point out was the one play where Connally finished and the two line clearances by Carrieri and Sanfilippo.

Remember, only Dombrowski was starting last night as his normal starting position in the backline. Both Norkus and Stokes were out injured and Sanfilippo had slotted over into a CB position.

BTW, one of those saves off the line was by Chris Carrieri, a midfielder, not the defense. After the game I asked him how the shortest guy on the pitch could jump so high :)

One bad thing about being behind the goal is absolutely no idea what went on except a bunch of Kickers players lifted their hands in the air and yet no goal was ever given.

    What was announced attendance?

If New England beats Harrisburg tonight, the Railhawks will play the Revs in the semifinals in New Britain, Connecticut. It'll be our first road game in this cup. The other semifinal is FC Dallas at Seattle Sounders.

So if a player is in front of the goalkeeper, regardless of if the keeper is upfield or if the player chooses to stand in the goalmouth, is he onside?

Your question confuses me. Let me clarify the law.

For an attacking player to be onside, one of the following two things must occur:

    1) There are two players from the opposing team (keeper + field player OR 2 field players) between the attacker and the goal line.

    2) The ball is ahead of the attacker.

If either of those situations occur, the player is onside.

Now, a player may be in an offside position (i.e., neither of those two rules are met) but still not called offside because in the opinion of the referee no advantage was being gained.

Which reminds me of a famous soccer quote: "If a player is not gaining an advantage...he should be trying to" :)

Was sitting in the section with the Kickers supporters. We had our own small section of Railhawks behind them and we bantered with the Richmond-folk all game. It was quite fun and it was a great win.

Point taken about the defensive lineup. They weren't bad, just not what I'd seen before. It appeared to be mainly a communication issue, which you'd expect when guys aren't in their normal positions.

And I said "defender," not "back," because I knew it was Carrieri who saved the first one. In my mind a midfielder standing on his own goal line is defending.

Too bad, I would have loved to see the Revs here. As it is, my family is planning to go to DC the following weekend to see them play DCU.

So let's hope for a Harrisburg upset tonight so we can host the semis!
