Bingo, this stereotype is starting to bother me, considering all the punishment our player got just for being good. Oh the powers the be at FIFA and UEFA really have it out for us. Always did, dating back from 66 when our WC title was stolen from us.

FORCA PORTUGAL! FORCA SUPERLIGA! WE ARE GIANT KILLERS!!

Ahm...much better than yours? I really love these n00bs.

As for Adu, I really don't see him playing much this season considering all the options Benfica has. His style of playing is attractive but doesn't impress me at all. I've seen plenty of technically gifted young prospects and more than half end up being show off.
Adu seems very motivated and a with great spirit right now. That's vital. Hopefully he'll rise to be a good star.

Ah yes, let's see, since I haven't spent much time (er... any) watching the Portuguese professional league, I'm a n00b. Your logic skills are right on par with your reading comprehension skills. Excellent point Chess_Kitty

"I'm pretty sure I'll get thrown in right away," Adu said. "Then again, it's not a done deal. I still have to earn the right to be on the field."

Regardless, he doesn't regret leaving MLS and brushed off criticism that he never had his heart in MLS.

"People are going to say stuff," he said. "I tried hard for every team I played for. I have heard that I didn't give it all I had. I did give my all."

So he thinks he'll get thrown in right away but then is quick to be politically correct and say that he'll have to earn the right. The article also says that Santos will most likely allow him to play his natural central attacking midfield position.

I think this has potential to be a great signing. I just want the kid's head to be in check and not full of ego like that Porto player who plays the wing.

Put it this way; Adu is a small investment risk, especially since there are quite a few players that I believe Benfica have that are better than Adu right off the bat. And then you also have Adu's attitude problem, etc.

If he buckles down he may be able to learn while in Portugal, and go on to great things, otherwise, he's going to be loaned out to Alverca or Gil Vicente, play a few seasons there, transfer to Porto, and by the time he's 27 he'll have finally won something.

Your post looks like you talk of our league in a depreciative manner. Specially if you first mention us diving and then wonder how our league is...read before you write.

And like SantaClara said, end of this.

To all you Benfica fans, Good luck! Sad to say that I'm sure in a year you'll all know what many of us have known all along!!! Good Freddie is about 4 or 5 years older than his mommy claimed when they brought him into the USA, just like thousands of other African footballers. Looked REAL talented playing against kids a few years his junior but when he had to play with the men, even the weak MLS players, he was just an average player...

    Another African scam artist...............

    Europe BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Normally I would call your comments a racist generalization but as I try to avoid personal attacks I will instead share the facts.

11 Years a go when Freddy and Fro were 7/5 Adu's mother won a "lottery" to immigrate to the US. When the came to the US they both enrolled in school and neither played organized soccer. Freddy was seen playing on the school yard by a coach who got him to come play organized soccer....

So lets do this from your perspective. Freddy and Fro's mom upon winning the lottery decided that her boys were going to be football stars in the states. In order to make this happen she pretended her 10 year old was 5 and her 13 year old was 8. To make sure they got the big soccer contract she didn't sign them up for soccer but staged his playing in the school yard with other kids, knowing a local coach would be watching and snatch him up. Just to throw people off the scent she had Fro skip the sixth grade and take up referee training. As a further insurance policy to protect here master plan she turned down a "six figure" offer from Inter Milan when he was 12 to send him to Florida and train without compensation, knowing the MLS is where the big money comes from.

Now that I look at it that way, it makes perfect sense thank you for your special insight!

Edit: Thanks for reminding us he didn't dominate grown men when playing MLS at age 14, 15, 16, 17......that proves everything!

Please, please, please bring up Danny Almonte (the baseball player) so I can demonstrate that the only things they have in common is immigration and brown skin. If what I read about Portugal is true, the Portuguese people are the wrong audience to share these racist views.

Im pretty sure he was just a troll...not a Benfica fan.

Half our team is black...I don't see how a Benfiquista could be racist.

Agreed, I have seen the squad, thats why I said Benfica fans were the wrong people to try to spread that crap to. I was really asking why Quaresma was quoting the post, in support or dissent.

I just hate it when people generalize about any group of people, especially when they don't know the facts of their life. If Freddy's mom was looking for the big payday could have cashed in with Inter Milan when he was 12.

I respect her for not sending her little boy away.

I agree...however it is disappointing that Freddy was pushed professional so young, and in a country that has no reputation for cultivating talent.

True, but in reality the options were pretty limited back then. The MLS didn't have the academy infrastructure it has now.

Short of sending her child off to be developed in a super club academy MLS might have been the best option. High school soccer would have been a waste, kids of the same age were not a challenge. Just look at his U-17 play when 14. USA soccer wasn't prepared for a kid like him, they are much better prepared today, I believe in large part to getting caught unprepared with Adu.

In any event, he's 18 now and in a great situation with Benfica so I guess it worked out pretty well.

I'm a Porto fan but I think Freddie Adu coming to Benfica is a good thing. I'm sure there are going to be a lot of requests to get the Portuguese league on american television. This is the move that's going to make it happen.

I completely agree, but I think it's a satellite thing b/c I can't find anything on cable, I get most of the soccer channels so maybe somebody will make a deal for the superliga in the future...
