It always shitted me that even after the world Cup we were still behind the Neds and England Even though we knocked them out of the last two tournaments

I do not think Argentina are overrated. Surely they are one of the best teams as of right now. Definitely a top 5...

After the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a revised calculation procedure for the FIFA rankings was introduced; it is a significantly simplified procedure. The new rankings were compiled in response to criticism from the media.Meetings were attended by FIFA staff and external experts and a large amount of research was conducted by this group, resulting in the new ranking system. The new system was confirmed in Leipzig on 7 December 2005 by a committee of FIFA executives. Notable changes include the dropping of the home or away advantage and number of goals from the calculation, and the simplification of many aspects of the system.

The system, like the previous ones, is extremely similar to that of a league, -though with changes made to ensure that it is still representative of the teams' performance despite playing differing numbers of matches per annum, and the differing strength of opposition that teams have to face. The factors taken into account are as follows:
-Match result (Win/Loss/Draw) (Win (no penalty shootout) =3 , Draw =1 , Loss (no penalty shootout) =0 , Win (penalty shootout) =2 , Loss (penalty shootout) =1 )
-Match status (Friendly match x 1.0, FIFA World Cup and Continental cup qualifiers x 2.5, Continental cup and Confederations Cup finals x 3.0, World Cup finals match x 4.0 )
    -Opposition strength ( = (200- ranking position)/100)
-Regional strength (UEFA (Europe) =1.00, CONMEBOL (South America) =0.98, AFC (Asia) =0.85, CAF (Africa) 0=.85, CONCACAF (North and Central America and Caribbean) 0.85, OFC (Oceania) =0.85 )
    -Date multiplier (Within the last 12 months x 1.0 , 12-24 months ago x 0.5 , 24-36 months ago x 0.3, 36-48 months ago x 0.2 )

Ranking points = 100 (Result points * Match Status * Opposition Strenght * Regional Strength * Date Multiplier)

Teams' actual scores are a result of the average points gained over each calendar year; matches from the previous four years are considered, with more weight being given to recent ones. Teams must have played at least 5 matches within the last twelve months to gain ranking points.

So get this, you could actually not have played a game since the last ranking and moved up a couple of spots (Historical data drops off after a certain time period).

At this time I do not care where we rank - I care about what we do on the field. We could be 100th for all I care - as long as we bring home some hardware.

In the WC06 we were suppose to get out of the group stage and that was it. We came home with 4th place.
In Euro2004 we were suppose to make it to the Quarter finals and that was it. We made it to the final.
In the Euro U21 (2007) we were suppose to make it to the Semi-finals. We didn't get out of the group stage and we didn't qualify for the olympics.
In the WCU20 (2007) we were suppose to make it to the quarter finals. We got out of the group stage and that was it.
Last year we were suppose to contest for the cup. We barely made it out of the group stage.

We may look good on paper - but how does that get translated onto the field?
What good are the rankings - if we can't produce on the results when required?

Currently in football - like the Joga Bonito commercials say - we've lost focus on the playing of the game and have gone for the win at all costs.

As soon as some player does some fancy footwork - he is brought down in a bone crunching tackle or elbowed across the head. As soon as aplayer enters the box - he starts deep sea diving looking for the yellow notes and the penalty spot that are buried somewhere in the minds of some idiotic referees.

Our best players are not being protected - they stress Fair Play but the message is heard as "Anything is fair - as long as you don't get caught." or "I would say that is was a fair play for the fairer side." or "We'll see that everyone plays fair as long as it meets our needs fair and square."

You will see that very soon why. People dont understand tha greatness of croatian teams but they will. You portugeuse, do you realise croatia is a force in european basketball, handball, waterpolo, tennis and football. Do you realise that this countrey of 5 million has had more succes in sports than much bigger countries. But i dont think you realise. Croatia is a great sporting country and i can say greater than portugal. You will soon learn who our players are. We have a mix of good technique and the mentality of a german. I would like to see a Portugal croatia soon. Our midfield is barely 25 years old. We have a young team that will play together for atleast 10 years.

Eduardo - Arsenal (portugal dont have a striker of his qualities)
Petric - Dortmund (excellent striker and quality you dont have)

    Kranjcar - Portsmouth
    Srna (Shacktar)
Modric (Dinamo, best player in croatia since prosinecki, looks like Deco when playing)
    Rakitic (Schalke)

    Kovac (Dortmund)
    Simunic (Hertha)
    Corluka (Dinamo)
    Simic (Milan)
    Knezevic (Livorno)

And than we have a bench thats also not bad:
    Babic (Betis)
    Pranjic(Heerenveen)
    Leko(Monaco)

We are better than Portugal at this moment and you can laugh all you want but if we can be Handball and Waterpolo champions, if we can be basketball champions and Davis cup champions why couldnt we become world champions in football??

I say we can, croats are arrogant enough and have a good mix of technique and physique. Already proven in other teamsports.

    Just watch the next years.

Then read you moran. What right do portuguese people have when talking about sports. Except for a few footballplayers i dont know of any sportpersonalities. Portugal is like a third world country. The only thing is football. And before the period of 2000 you werent even good at football. You were a nobody before 2000 and soon you will be a nobody again. Croatia is like america for Portugal in sports.

I say again, you will see. What is funny is the fact that only little footballcountries have something to sat about the ranking if they dont .like it. I never hear the big countries talk bullshit like Germany, Italy or Brazil. Its usually the Hollands and the Portuguese. Too little confidence in their own qualities.

OK, now you pissed me off!
You wanna try playing some roller-hockey against us?
Never heard of Carlos Lopes, Rosa Mota (both Olympic Marathon Champions)?
How about the 2006 European Athlete of the year and 100M and 200M European Champion Francis Obikwelu and became the first athlete to win both 100 and 200m in the same Euros since 1978?
You never heard of Ticha Penicheiro (WNBA Champion and many times All-Star and European Champion)?

Beach Soccer, you guys even have a team or beaches for that matter?

I swear I was going to read it, I was. And then you attempted to belittle me by trying to call me a moron... and yet, ironically, and hillariously, managed to spell it wrong.

I'm convinced you're missing a few too many brain cells, try breathing sometime.

Didn't we beat you guys last year in a friendly?? With a lot of playing missing, I remember Tiago being there... But not maybe first team players. Serbia...there's a good team . Croatia ...not so much.

I'll list the players we would need to beat Croatia.

    C. Ronaldo (Manchester United)

    ....

    That's it.

Oh yeah, im sorry guys i forgot the marathon. Bravo!

In fact i like the portuguese team at the moment and they are for me better than Holland (i live in rotterdam) and England for sure looking at the way they play. I would never laugh at a country of which i dont know much about. Some portuguese fans do and act like they have germanies results. You are too arrogant. When you get in a decline you will only have marathon runners to look at. You belittle a nation that is america in sports for you without even knowing anything about a team. And the team croatia you played against is not the same team now. You could at least wonder why they are at the 7 position. But no, just acting stupid.

    PRE-World Cup 2006...

    Croatia... 26th

1 loss and 2 draws later they go bouncing out...

Somehow... a year later.. They're in the top 10. In fact, they're the only team in the top 10 that didn't advance in the World Cup... or EURO 2004 for that matter.

Congrats on beating England, and for beating Italy in a friendly. But let's get serious. The main basings of FIFA rankings, as it's always said is that a large portion is based on tournament performance. I'm just wondering what tournament Croatia won that they somehow managed to be in the top 10. They have no merits for being there, and are a tell-tale sign that FIFA just pops these out of their ass with no regard for anything.

What tournament did Portugal win? We were less than ten years ago third in the world. Have you ever had a medal in times of the colour tv?

One thing i have to say, you will see.
