Apparently Rangers are in discussions for Szetela. Also mentions Galatasaray and Parma. http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/sport/f...objectid=19458094&siteid=64736-name_page.html
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Galatasaray is probably out since Turkey isn't a EU nation and Danny would take up one of 6 non-Turkish slots on the squad. Others are well within reason.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Hmm, Parma getting linked to both Adu and Szetela.... It must be because they know Rossi was talented and they figure he's only playing for Italy because he couldn't get on the USA Youth teams... so the guys that played must really be good. I'm not sure where Szetela will end up, but I'm guessing he's out of MLS within the next 6 months.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Sadly i agree with you. For whatever reason, Szetela has never seen major minutes in Columbus. I think for some reason Sigi Schmid has a problem with him. I feel Szetela is a much better player than danny orourke who is a fixture for the crew, while szetela doesnt get off the bench.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? I agree with you. I've been in Ohio for a bit now and have gotten to some Crew matches and I'm always amazed how little Schmid seems to think of Danny. Personally I see some good things in him, but they sure as heck haven't been developed/nurtured in Columbus. Then again, sadly that can be said about a lot of players in Columbus. Personally I've never been a big fan of Sigi, so at least I get to blame him for not playing/developing Szetela
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Not sure where I stand on Szetela's development, but let's assume he had gone to a European team a few years ago. Would he have gotten any more first team minutes than he did in Columbus? Plus he was hurt a lot.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? As the article says, he can sign a pre-contract beginning on July, 1. Not long to wait.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Szetela is a twiner. Can't control a ball, play quick passing game to be a distributing center mid, doesn't read game well enough to be a pure destroyer (that's why danny o'rourke is ahead of him), to slow to play winger, not skilled enough to be Dempsey-like "poacher from miedfield". If he learns to read the game better and foul less, his abilities to make long passes, finish and be agressive near opponent's goal will be a big bonus. But he needs to be adequate for the position he is playing first.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? I know you're joking, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rossi had put in a good word for some American players of his age group that he might know or be familiar with. A decent amount of our South American scouting has always come from tips from the South Americans on the roster.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Yes, as soon as July 1 rolls around, we'll know the future of Danny Szetela.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? C'mon, seriously? I have to defend Danny Szetela's playing time in Columbus to Crew fans now, too? Allow me to quote myself in full from another thread in here: **** Danny's "future" got "fouled up" by the fact that he's spent the vast majority of his pro career injured, or away with national teams. 2004: 8 games, 4 starts, after joining the team midseason. 2005: 16 games, 13 starts. He was unavailable for 3 games for the U20 World Cup, and NINE games with concussion effects. 2006: Broke his foot in April, missing 16 games. Two weeks after returning from that injury, he hurt his knee and missed the rest of the season. 2007: Only got one appearance. He would have started the game against RBNY, except he's off again with the U20s. He missed some games earlier this season thru injury. This season has been pretty much the only time he's missed games via "coaches decision" (ie, not played despite being available), and it's mostly because he's been unable to unseat Grabavoy, O'Rourke and Oughton in the midfield. Oughton is the most likely to be beat out - Danny is definitely more skillful, but Oughton provides leadership that the Crew desperately needed. Szetela's problem isn't the fact that he's in some kind of talent "black hole" in Columbus. For most of the prospects who have flamed out here, I can provide neat and tidy explanations, if anybody wants them.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Don't you think his agent is negotiating with the "interested" parties already?
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? July, 1 is just the beginning of the signing period, which is what Dave was alluding to. Given Danny's last negiotiations, this one may last a while as well. Then again, he doesn't need his mother involved in this round.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Szetela's agent Shep Messing is quoted on americansoccerdaily.com that two teams (Siena and Celtic) are the two front runners for his services though a number of other teams are interested. http://americansoccerdaily.com/news/szetelachase.htm
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? His mother is a nice lady. Sister too. Met the brother once, big bald dude. Came up to me at a tailgate once, cool guy. Shame that Danny was on the Crew, seemed that a bunch of family/friend types wanted him to play for Metro. I think he'll do ok in Europe. Loved how he kissed the badge when he scored against Poland. Class.
Dunno if Rangers will be allowed to make any more transfers this season if a fraud investigation happens at the club
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? And if Roy is Danny's actual agent, then why does Shep keep talking to the press about him?
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? Well, Danny's in a way his client by association, in that it's Shep's agency and he has a personal and financial stake in his agents getting good deals for their clients. In any case, conflicts of interest abound.
Re: Rangers in for Szetela? I am not saying she isn't but they went through a ton of agents the last time (the only time), the Szetelas had to negotiate a deal.
Question. Have American players always been linked Spain and Italy like they have been lately? I've only been following us soccer for about a year so I'm curious.
