FC Superfund is no more => New club: SK Austria Kärnten (= Carinthia)

All clubs of season 2007/08 in order of last seasons results:

    FC Red Bull Salzburg
    SV Josko Ried
    SV Mattersburg
    SK Rapid Wien
SK Austria Kärnten (replaces FC Superfund)
    FK Austria Magna Wien
    SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz
    Cashpoint SCR Altach
    FC Wacker Tirol
    LASK Linz (got promoted)

    Predictions:
Salzburg has got the best team by far. Rapid and Austria Wien will be better than last season. Sturm Graz has got a young and sharp set team. Altach and Tirol are considered to be on bottom of the table. The rest are question-marks and will be somewhere in between, surprises are expected.

Ranking something like that - in order of (expected) quality of the team:
Salzburg, Rapid, Austria Wien, SV Mattersburg, Sturm Graz, SV Ried, LASK Linz, SK Kärnten, Wacker Tirol, Altach

News today is that Red Bull Salzburg's board unanimously voted to remove Lothar Matthäus from his position as co-manager of the team. Trapattoni will lead the team by himself in the coming season. Seems Matthäus was the source of much discontent in the locker room. Those of us who witnessed his antics in MLS aren't shocked...

I like your overall analysis, though based on the final months of the past season, I don't think anyone deserves to be ranked below Wacker Tirol.

True. He was not satisfied with his authorities and he is a difficult person to deal with. Futhermore he has other tactical visions as Trapattoni.

His work on the field will not be missed but he still is a well-known personality which helps to acquire new players. (e.g. Sasa Ilic, former playmaker of Galatasary, who signed a contract with Red Bull Salzburg last week.)

However, I think Red Bull Salzburg will have no problems to go without him as he is one trouble spot less.

Well, I dont know how good they are going to do next season. Wacker Tirol now got Peter Orosz from Salzburg for the offense and perhaps they also get Aleksandr Knavs from Salzburg (fullback). On the other hand Ferdinand Feldhofer (defender, key-player) could leave.

Next season is going to be much more interesting than the last one thats for sure.

Rapid Vienna has signed (although not official) Daniel Xhafaj (Striker) of KF Teuta from the Albanian Superleague. He scored 20 goals last season in 33 games. He refused to play in the Russian superleague with Amkar because he wanted to be closer to home. This are the words of the president of KF Teuta.

    SK Austria Kärnten's move

With this recent move do you think this will greatly affect FC Kärnten and their fans?

    Re: SK Austria Kärnten's move

Atm they are not doing as planned. Many players did not want to move from Pasching to Klagenfurt and there are some other problems (stadium, training facilities) Btw: New coach is Walter Schachner.

Of course fans of former SV Superfund Pasching were disappointed about that, few of them chose to support LASK Linz (same city, Pasching is a suburb of Linz) and some are now with the new founded club FC Pasching (4th league).

The fans of FC Kärnten are divided - some are pro, others against the new club.
Furthermore its not sure who will get the license of the "old" club in the 2nd league. Perhaps there will be a "amateur" team (youth team) of FC Kärnten, perhaps the license goes to another Austrian club. Future is quite unsure atm.

You'll have to check back again, it doesn't appear that they have the time of day for the matches set yet.

No, times of the matches are yet to be determined.

Austria ist not very big, from Vienna you can go by train very fast to Linz and Salzburg (direct connection).

I would´ve recommended watching Salzburg vs. Arsenal on 07/25 (friendly on the occasion of opening the extension of the stadium => 32.000 capacity) but I think there are no tickets left as its already sold out.

Great matches are always Rapid vs Austria (derby) or matches of Salzburg vs the viennese clubs, especially against Rapid.
e.g. on 07/21: FK Austria vs RB Salzburg in Vienna (Franz Horr stadium)
or on 08/18: SK Rapid vs. RB Salzburg in Vienna (Gerhard Hanappi stadium)
or on 08/04: SK Rapid vs FK Austria in Vienna (Gerhard Hanappi stadium)

The Bundesliga season starts momentarily, on Tuesday, July 10th, as LASK hosts SK Austria Karnten (formerly SV Pasching).

When I went to the sport1.at website, it looked as though the pay-channel Premiere is offering some programs (including football) over the Internet, and I got my hopes up thinking I would be able to watch this match on-line.

Unfortunately, it is only available to residents of Austria and Germany. What a let-down.

Everyone says the Internet is making the world “smaller,” but it seems to me like geographic restrictions are becoming more troublesome, not less.

With all the soccer in the US, Canada, and Venezuela, I forgot about the Bundesliga.

    Thanks for the reminder.

FT: LASK - SK Austria Karnten 1:0

LASK gets a late goal from midfielder Florian Klein in the 89th minute to open the season with a nice home win.

Vastic hit the post in the first half for LASK and Krajic hit the post for Karnten just after the Klein goal.

Interesting start to the season with the two new Bundesliga teams squaring off. Vastic propelled LASK back to the top division, and I suspect he's got enough left in the tank to still make an impact at this level. We'll see as the season unfolds.

How much of a continuity is there between Pasching and Kärnten? There was an earlier report that many Pasching players didn't want to make the move...

According to the season previews I read yesterday at sport1.at (which, by the way, is an outstanding one-stop destination for an outsider like me who wants to have to go to only one site to follow the Bundesliga), the SK Austria Karnten roster is broken down as follows: Ten players from the old FC Superfund (Pasching), three players signed from GAK, and six young players signed from FC Karnten.

The oddsmakers have SK Austria Karnten pegged as 4th favorite to win the title this year, but I really expect them to struggle. Their youth players don't have much experience, and all their players with experience seem older. I really expect them to break down later in the season as the crammed schedule (done for Euro 2008 scheduling purposes) really takes hold. And with few home games early because of stadium issues, they seem destined to get off to a very slow start. I can't see them down at the bottom, but I find it hard to envision a scenario where they are at all competitive, and I don't even think they have a great chance at the European spots.

Yeah, that's surprising. I think Salzburg is runaway favorite to win the title. Rapid and Austria should round out the top three. Though coach Walter Schachner has had success in the Bundesliga in the past, I can't imagine Kärnten will be the best of the rest.

Incidentally, here are the remaining results of Round 1. No real surprises, I'd say.

    Rapid Wien 3 - 1 Wacker Tirol
    Ried 1 - 2 Mattersburg
    Sturm Graz 2 - 2 Austria Wien
    Salzburg 4 - 1 Altach

They have got some good players, at least good enough for the Austrian Bundesliga, but they are no team. I expect them to do better as time goes by but atm they are going to face hard times and just have to struggle to survive.

Hi, i`m new. I find it fascinating that some people from the states care about Austrian Bundesliga.

    Latest Results (Round 2):

Wacker Innsbruck* - Sturm Graz 0:0
    Altach - Ried 2:3
    Kärnten - RB Salzburg 1:0
    Austria Wien - LASK 1:1

Mattersburg vs. Rapid Wien was postponed `cause Rapid played UI-Cup in Bratislava against Slovan (1:0 - aggregate 3:2 - Rapid is facing Rubin Kazan in the next round).

*Wacker Tirol renamend to Wacker Innsbruck (reffering to the original FC Wacker Innsbruck, 5x Austrian Champions in the 70s.)

Thanks for posting--and for the name-change note. The current Bundesliga squad Wacker Innsbruck doesn't retain the rich championship history of the previous incarnation that went bankrupt, or does it?
