I saw that too. Loose ball and Nguyen has a head start, only to find the Argie beat him to the ball. I always stereotyped Vietnamese being fast. Not this one. Maybe he's been deprived of nuoc mam while playing down in SA.

I have to say that was the first time I saw the kid on the pitch but the lack of speed might have just been a case of just being put in the game and not tuned into the speed of the game.
As for him being Vietnamese it is a stereotype that gets placed on Asian players being fast and extremely fit. Look at the Koreans and Japanese tireless workers on the pitch we speed and energy to burn.

Great news, the kid NEEDS to play somewhere this season. He ain't getting any younger and really needs ot start seeing more playing time in order to continue improving.

Looks like Nguyen has a great future. He needs to get some action in a league that requires fine technique and a lot of brain. Mid table club in Spain, great. Top 5 teams in Holland, good. France, ok. MLS is too much muscle, so so technique and no brain what so ever.

    Kevin8833,
Nguyen will more likely have a career ending injury in the MLS, than gain any experience.

He's too slow and small for MLS.

    Just look at Freddy Adu.

I just wanted to point out that, in fairness to Lee, last night against Colombia he didn't look nearly as slow as he did against Paraguay.

He's never gonna be a blazer but he has better wheels than I originally thought. And, he certainly has nice skill. Clean feet and thinks the game well and appears to hit a good ball.

Still, I wonder where he ends up lining up for both club and country. Is he fast enough to play wide mid? Is he tactically aware enough to play behind the forwards as an attacking mid? Is he strong enough to bang as a forward in the box?

He clearly has talent, no doubt. But he also has some physical limitations that hamper his options. It will be interesting to see where he ends up and how he does. I'm hoping for the best.

Lee is not slow. Maybe he had jelly legs the other day, but speed is the least of his issues.

    Size, yeah. Speed. No.

I've seen Lee play here in Dallas and I know the only way you can believe his talents is seeing it for yourself. He's not your prototypical soccer player. He still looks like a U17 player. Until people play against him a couple of time, they always will under estimate him at first sight. Lee is F*in confident bordering on cocky. He's no "glad to be here" kind of guy. Any opportunity he has been given, he has taken full advantage. Force his way onto the U20 team. A roster spot onto the Copa team after half a year of down time for shoulder surgery. I can't imagine him to be in top form but he must of impressed BB enough to include him. Hopefully he gets a full run for the Swedan game. I think if you ever give Lee a chance, he will be entrenched on the USMNT roster for a long time.

Which is odd because Colombia is considered a far more athletic side than Paraguay and China and yet, this was true.

He was used as left wing last night and as a right wing by PSV but, to me, he's a withdrawn central forward/central attacking mid ... which the "empty bucket" (or a "barf bucket", as someone called it yesterday on the USMNT N&A boards) doesn't use.

And Bob isn't exactly a tactical genius with his formation choices.

yup.. i remember seeing him with the U20's and speed was never an issue. I too was surprised/taken back by that little 'race' in the Paraguay game.

Anyway, I thought he displayed some ball control that nobody else did last night.

It doesn't matter how much of a tactical genius you are if your guys play like crap. Does saying that make me a fan-boy? For me Nguyen's best position is in the following type of formation:

    -------------Dempsey-------
    -------Nguyen--------Donovan----
    -----Clark-----Bradley-----Feilhaber--
    Bornstein----Boca---Demerit-----Spector

Unfortunately for him that's also where you'd put Beasley and Mapp in the Christmas tree formation. I say bring him to the Azteca for the next friendly. Why the hell not.

When you read statements like this from this poster, just analyze how you think the types of 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 formations Bradley has used with the USMNT compares to the tactical wizardry of the 3-6-1 proposed by our self-proclaimed tactical genius (and he aparently has this ability in gridball as wel, at least accoring to him).

Martin save your crybaby stalker routine for WR or better yet PM SFS I'm sure he really cares what you have to so over and over and over again. No one else cares. Try and stay on topic or go back to MLS General.

    Just on a dare - US in 3-6-1 ==>

    -------------Howard---------------

    Demerit------Onyewu----Bocanegra-

    ----------Clark-------Bradley-------

    --------------Feilhaber-------------

    Dempsey------Donovan----Beasley--

    --------------Altidore----------------

It saves you on fullbacks, though someone like Spector could play in any defensive spot, and gets most of the best players on the pitch.

But, as I've always said, a formation is just a formation.

Tonight, Rongen went to 4-4-1-1 and it worked perfectly.

Of course, he actually had a decent forward and the guy behind him.
