As a counterpoint to Keller's recent remarks about MLS, I thought the the breif story on FC Dallas rookie Juan Carlos Toja was worth noting for those who might have missed it. 3rd Degree ran an article on Toja earlier, which gives the background story for those not familiar with it: It appears the story has a happy ending, as a recent update by 3rd Degree confirmed: There have been other players from South American who have said MLS has exceeded their expectations, and comments like this form Toja illustrate the MLS is becoming a viable option for younger players who earlier might have shunned the league as a negative career move. The times, they are a changing. Both stories are worth reading: http://www.3rddegree.net/2007/06/who-is-juan-toja/ http://www.soccer365.com/US_NEWS/MLS/page_95_145078.shtml
it really is a wonderful aspect that has changed, the more and more these players credit the league the more skilled players will come thus continuing to make the league better, its just a great building process for the leagues credibility that seems to be really taking off fast
If TOJA gets called up to the NT that would make this ideal. Glad to see someone like MLS, hopefully more South Americans come up here over the next few years.
At the same token CK Mr goalkeeper thinks MLS is a step down for his old ass. The reason for that is so clear that no one in MLS would want to spend all that money for a aged GK past his prime. I think he talked down about an offer from Iran as well, which makes him a bigger fool then he is.
I love Toja maybe he'll promote the league and get more players in I guess we need more columbians, JPA is doing wonders for mls, now Toja says its great here hey bring the whole colombian national team, cordoba and etc would help the league
He is a great player....although he scored the winning goal against us last week it sure was a joy to watch him live at the park. And who could deny that mullet-esque hair is AWESOME!
The whole article is a great testament to the growing strength and place of the league. Some of those quotes, like the one I'll paste in, must seem like music to MLS' HQ's ears: What an advertisement for the league...amongst all the other great stuff he has to say about it. For my money, though Angel has come on like a speeding locomotive, Toja has been MVP of the first 1/2 of the year. What a great addition to the league. Here's to hopin' he hangs around for another year or two before moving on to (possibly) bigger and better things...
i continue to LOVE this guy! i dont understand why the league isnt marketing him like mad hes one of the most talented players hands down hes young, flashy, exciting to watch, but also really down to earth and unique he's quickly becoming my favorite player in the league if it werent for my hometown hero kenny cooper on the same team, he'd be my favorite fc dallas player
Like I've said before, he's Colombian, what do you expect? Awesome addition for MLS. Great player who gives 110% every game.
Are you kidding? The comparison ESPN2 did with him and Nigel Tufnel was one of the few worthwhile and funny sidebars they have ever done.
Why, oh why do people keep saying he has a freaking mullet? He is not Jeff Agoos... He is not Chad "Crazy Eyes" Deering... He is not achey-breaky! He is King Juan Carlos! (I get credit for crowning him this moniker)
I know people get all excited by these statements but does anyone really think while they are in the league and under contract they are going to say anything but favorable things? Its not exactly an unbiased opinion.
The new Latin blood unleashed in the league has really been great, not just Toja but Gallindo over at Chivas, really entertaining players. The other big thing about Toja, we really need those young Latin players coming in and with the continuing fan problems in the major Argentinian (and Brazil? I don't follow that league...) league MLS can only improve as a safe, viable option for players to get their names on the international market and play in a pretty solid league. This should also improve support for MLS sides from the Latin communities throughout the nation, something that could really catapult our league to new levels. I love it, hopefully we can lock him up for a few years.
The 3rd Degree article says he's on loan. So that's probably why. Why invest the resources marketing a player who may well be gone next year?
Great story! And I love the comments about the quality of Pizza Hut Park and the surrounding complex. There should be no doubt that the focus on infrastructure will pay off for MLS in the near term. Both in profitability and in the quality of players that the league can attract. The difference between MLS and the Mexican League is the number of quality South American players. The US National team just prooved that once again. But I think that more and more South American players are going to look at MLS as a viable option. And when we get to the point where we can compete with Mexican clubs for quality South American talent look out. MLS clubs will become a force in CONCACAF and beyond.
Whaaa? You lost me. How did the USMNT prove that the number of quality SA players in MLS is the difference between MLS and Mexican League??? Also, didn't Meixco just prove that they can kick some pretty good South American butt last night???
The point that I was trying to make is that American players stack up very well with most Mexican players. The South Americans are a step above. And they are primary difference in the two leagues.
