I just wanted to say that I hope the Fire will start to turn things around and make the Midwest a great place for MLS. On that note, I was sad to see Sarachan's departure. I had the opportunity to interview him last summer during the Wiz-Fire USOC match. He was very kind and considerate, and did everything he could to keep in touch with me after the article was written. Since then, I've been rooting for Chicago quite a bit. I hope that the Fire get things going once again, but I will always miss Dave Sarachan!

Dave Sarachan is a great guy. I don't think anyone here would disagree with you. The reason he was fired, though, was'nt based on that.

There's a reason someone started saying "Nice guys finish last" and lots of folks repeat it (including me).

I'm so sick of reading about how nice he is. He did a poor job and deserved to be fired.

    Chi - ca - go!
A lot of the other MLS teams thought he was a great guy.

    Dallas ... loved him.

New England ... loved that offense of his.

To counter that.. 'Even the loooosers get lucky some time!" Thanks Tom Petty.

Though that didnt apply to Dave except early in the season

Who cares guys!!!!!!!! We didnt hire him to be a great guy and we didnt fire him for being a nice guy.

This siht is irrelevant. There are alot of nice guys in this league.

You want nice, go to visit the retirement homes in Chicago. Lots of nice old useless people their too.

I think the point is that DS was a class act; which he is. Everyone got what they wanted, he's gone, and he was fired like he was working as a dishwasher at some all-night diner, so let it go.
You want to draw and quarter someone?, how about the folks who run this team and don't care squat about the fans in this city. In the end, they're still in charge, and they still make the decisions. Be careful what you wish for.

I'm a nice guy, do you think I should coach the Fire?

Thanks oldguyfc (ironic name!). A lot of you did in fact missed the point. I never mentioned that he was a great coach. I honestly think that he is pretty mediocre. I felt like writing, however, that he was a man of good character. Sorry.

So is my grandfather. Should I go post that on the KC board?

Only if your grandfather was coaching a professional soccer team that was in a city other than New York that is run by grocery clerks from NYC whom send an errand boy to do their dirty work.

    I'll ask again:

How should Dave have been fired?

By the person who took John Guppy's job.

At least that's what I think oldguyfc has been trying to say.

By bringing him into a private office and speaking to him and not having other people in the room and having it leak to every player before DS even had a chance to speak to them as a group.
    Any other questions?

I retract my assumption. Though I do stand by Dave being fired by the guy who took the place of a fired JGupster.

The way Dave told it, he was called into the office at 9:30am and told of the decision.......but I'll make up a version I like anyway:

Gupp: "Dave, I need to see you in my office..."

Dave: "Now?...I was just gonna start practice..."

    Gupp: "Yes now."

Dave: "You need to be more patient."

(they enter Gupp's office, basement of TP in the boiler room)

Gupp: "I suppose you're wondering why I called you here this morning."

    Dave: "Yes."

Gupp: "I have good news and bad news."

Dave: "Can I just have the good news?"

    Gupp: "No." "Dave, you're fired."

    Dave: "What's the good news?"

Gupp: "Oh...well, I got you those Gold Cup Final tickets you wanted."

Dude, I was calling for his head before 2004 was even over....

My point is that being nice has nothing to do with job performance in sports. If ya can't win ior not playing to potential (Guevara with Chivas... everyone had nothing but praise for him as a person..."nice guy".... but it was his professional side they were unhappy with....)

Having said that, if what I am reading in this thread is true, his termination was handled REALLY unprofessionally. Another Guppy screw-up.

No kidding. Well put. OHh Gooosh he is soo nice and cute and cuddly, I want to put him next to my other gnomes in my neighbors yard.

I have never seen the Fire fans become so freaking Magoo over a player/coach who sucked. Good lord.

OH Spare me. he made six figures a year. He will manage.

UHHh DUDE... Dave was RUNNING THIS TEAM. What the hell is this we need to fire the guys running this team. We just did. That was Daves team on the field not John Guppies. Bob Bradley was able to tell MLS to stick it when Campos wasnt performing well, so if Dave didnt have the nut sack to tell someone else yes or no about his decision well that is also his own fault.

You like him so much go visit him in Glenview and rub his balls while he tells you about the glory years in 2003 when he took Bob Bradleys team sprinkled with Damani Ralph to MLS Cup.
