are you serious? he's one of the best players ever for the US and he's disappeared completely. The soccer media hasn't even wondered or reported on what's in his future. Imagine if that happened in other sports. It's very strange.
Yep I'm serious. He's essentially done nothing since 2002. Last time I checked that was 5 years ago. The soccer media. They don't have time for JOB. Beckham is coming.
John O'brien showed so much, wait..........isn't there a thread about this somewhere? Seriously, JOB showed so much in what he gave us that he could steal my car and kill my dog and I might still shake his hand (ok so I don't have a dog...and my car is paid off). STILL....He could've shown years of greatness, but instead we got only a glimpse. JOB - "sit you down, rest you." I would still love to see him latch on to another MLS side, if/when healthy. He should still have alot to offer.......healthy.
Exactly. When he was healthy and fit (basically the 2002 World Cup), he was the best field player ever for the nats.
I agree. It truly is a shame... so much promise and talent and saavy in midfield. Injury cut out his international career much the same way it did Mehmet Scholl for Germany. Mehmet was and still is (retired from Bayern Munich this last spring) a fan favorite all over Germany, which given the rest of the country "love to hate Bayern" attitude, is quite an accomplishment. I miss JOB, but realistically, it was more painful watching him "try" to play for the Nats last June than it was a pleasure. I wish him the best. I am hoping Feilhaber is the second coming of JOB.
I was really quite amazed that Reyna was selected to the all-tournament first team in 2002 and JOB failed to even get an honorable mention. He played every minute of that cup for us. Reyna did'nt play at all in our big upset win against Portugal. But why are you doing this to me again!!! I need to move on!
John O'brien had me at beating Portugal. Didn't he hurt both of his achilles' tendons? Or something horrible like that?
He has had som many strains, sprains, connective tissue injuries, tedon injuries, etc, that I can't help wondering if he has some disorder or the connective tissue that makes him more fragile or that impedes healing... anyway, he was a very good player who probably would have been a great player if not for the unbelievable string of injuries... I can't help but think that he will be of great benefit to US soccer in some capacity in the future... Rand
In all seriousness, not everyone's bodies are capable of sustaining the rigors that professional athletes are forced to go through. It's too bad for JOB because he didn't get the chance to live up to his full potential. Unfortunately, that's just the way things go for some people.
Where is the outrage though - that the soccer public doesn't have a whiff of an official answer and that we're all simply speculating. He is by most accounts one of the top 5 most talented players we've ever produced. Landon raved about his quality - and now he's disappeared so that we are left to speculate. . . In my case, wildly, that he might have psych v. physio problems - and in others that he's had alignment/tendon/ligament etc. damage etc. Why isn't this a Jeff Bradley, Greg Lalas, Grant Whal, Ives Galarcep, Michael Lewis cover story? Imagine if he were Spanish or English - there would be daily stories about his exploits or road to recover or rec league progress. I'm perplexed - there is an incredible story here that nobody is telling.
Pretty funny. Seriously though, we this recent selection that Bradley put out for the Copa America anyone who was born in this country has a chance to make the squad. If he could get his act together, he could contest for a spot in the middle, in time. For crying out loud if Bradley's son can make the squad anyone can.
Calling Beau Dure. Beau Dure. Please pick up the white courtesy phone. There is a hell of a story here that nobody seems to be telling. Where in the world is John O'Brien, what is he doing, and how did he get there?
