Copa America 2007 - Construction of the Stadiums Updates

I'll go straight to the point,
there's some people in Venezuela had hate to see people happy over there because they hate the government so much.

I knew things like this were going to happen.

The only thing is that the Vice-president of Conmebol (South American soccer federation) checked that stadium TWO days ago and here's the news about it saying that he approved it and he even said:
"I have no doubt that the stadium will be ready for the inauguration game. We worked for the people in Germany 2006 and this stadium (San Cristobal) has nothing to envy to the best stadiums in the World"

Certainly moving WAY into the future...where the possibilities are endless...but one would think that, if Venezuela has a good Copa America -as a host and as a team- and Brazil was unable to fully prepare a bid for the 2014 WC...then maybe, maaaaybe, Venezuela has a shot with all these nice stadia looking to the future, no?

El vicepresidente de la Confederación Suramericana de Fútbol (CSF-Conmebol), Eugenio Figueredo, solicitó a los medios de comunicación venezolanos a que hablen más de fútbol y dejen a un lado las críticas sobre los estadios.

Figueredo fue claro y preciso. Una vez más ratificó que habrá Copa América en las nueve sedes propuestas por el Comité Organizador Nacional y, además, hizo un llamado público para que la prensa "demuestre al mundo toda su capacidad organizativa y su lado competitivo en el deporte".

El representante de CSF-Conmebol estuvo casi una semana en tierras venezolanas para realizar una nueva inspección en los estadios. Sólo visitó seis de las nueve sedes, pero lo que vio fue suficiente para verificar que el trabajo va por buen camino.

"No reprocho a los periodistas y sé que acá les gusta mucho el beisbol, pero deben dedicarse a hablar de fútbol. Le hago un desafío a la prensa y a la sociedad venezolana para que trabajen por el fútbol", dijo.

Para el segundo al mando en el máximo organismo del balompié suramericano, las críticas de orden político no benefician al certamen. Por lo tanto, sugirió que el trabajo de los medios debe contribuir a que todos los venezolanos respiren y sientan la copa.

"Nosotros jugamos al fútbol. La pasión del fútbol es simbólica. El gol que anula el árbitro o lo que ataja el arquero le gusta al fútbol y quiere fútbol. Nosotros afortunadamente no mezclamos la política con el fútbol ni a favor ni en contra, somos otra cosa", señaló.

Durante la gira constató que en cada una de las sedes se cumple el cronograma general de obras. Sin embargo, el ente continental seguirá observando de cerca los trabajos, sobre todo en Barinas y Barquisimeto, donde reconoció que existen retrasos pero existe confianza de que ambos escenarios estarán listos para jugar.

"He visto comentarios de la prensa en donde dicen que en un estadio no se va a poder jugar, pero del otro lado el estadio está casi terminado. Nosotros como Confederación Suramericana de Fútbol pedimos que se hablen de las cosas positivas porque vinimos a este país a hacer la mejor Copa América de la historia", completó.

Probably would need a few more football only stadiums for that and some time. Definately will be hosting a sub17 or sub 20.

"Se va a jugar la Copa América en todos los estadios presentados por Venezuela, aunque puede haber una modificación posterior en aquellos escenarios que no cumplan los cupos que nosotros requerimos", declaró Eugenio Figueredo, vicepresidente de la Confederación Suramericana de Fútbol para cerrar su gira definitiva por los escenarios de esta cita continental tras una reunión con el Comité Organizador Nacional.

Conclusión: sí van todos los estadios, pero hay cambios en el fixture de cuartos de final.

El calendario de primera ronda permanecerá tal como está, así como las semifinales y la final en el Pachencho Romero.

El estadio La Carolina de Barinas tendrá que ceder su partido de cuartos de final en la cita continental al José Antonio Anzoátegui de Puerto La Cruz, según fuentes cercanas al Comité Organizador Nacional de la cita continental. El proyectado recorte del aforo a 22 mil espectadores a causa de retrasos en las obras y las deudas pendientes en el plan ciudad no garantizaban las condiciones necesarias para la visita de selecciones como Brasil o México, posibles equipos presentes en el juego de segunda ronda asignado a dicha capital llanera.

A la opción de Puerto La Cruz, sin embargo, se suman el Olímpico de la UCV y el Pachencho Romero de Maracaibo como posibles sedes sustitutas.

El Metropolitano de Barquisimeto estaría en una situación similar, con Caracas y Maracaibo, de nuevo, como beneficiarias de un compromiso adicional.

Figueredo, aunque no oficializó el cambio -"no lo tenemos definido todavía", dijo al término de su encuentro con las autoridades, incluyendo al vicepresidente Jorge Rodríguez-, reconoció que esta modificación está sobre la mesa. La decisión final estará en manos del Comité Ejecutivo de Conmebol en su próxima reunión, el próximo 15 de junio en Asunción, Paraguay.

Pero sí habló de La Carolina.

"El que está un poquito más complicado es Barinas por la capacidad que tiene en su entorno y porque los partidos que va a recibir tendrían a Brasil y México. Tenemos que cuidar los escenarios y también a los equipos que participan", manifestó. "Hay que darle seguridad de calidad a las selecciones que vayan clasificando para que tengan los escenarios adecuados", agregó.

Barinas se quedará con un único partido en Copa América, el Estados Unidos-Paraguay del 2 de julio en la primera ronda, correspondiente al Grupo C.

Barquisimeto, en caso de sufrir la misma suerte, conservaría dos choques: Colombia-Estados Unidos y Argentina-Paraguay, ambos el día 5 de julio.

El dirigente de Conmebol restó peso a los cambios que se vienen en el calendario: "Lo importante para Venezuela es que se jugará en los nueve estadios".

I agree with Danilo, Barinas is a dump in the middle of nowhere. If Chavez would have not been born there, that place would have never been considered as a venue.

I don't hate anybody, I´m too old for that. Just think that the guy is a disgrace, a mad combination of authoritarian with populist. And I don't say anymore before the moderators ask me to open a NSR thread.

Don´t want to be repetitive Danilo, but please look at the outside of the stadium in Puerto Ordaz. That is far from finish and will not be on time by any stretch of the imagination.

I think Conmebol is trying to do some damage limitation here. As is too late to change the host nation or cancel the event all together, their main worry now is only what it is going to be seen in the TV box. In the meantime, they are trying to please "the Sabaneitor" having at least one game in each of the nine stadiums. I imagine Chavez made sure they feel very comfortable in Venezuela, if you know what I mean. But it is more than clear for me that nor the stadiums or the infrastructure of the cities are ready to host the event.

Anyway, let's wait until June 15th, when we should have some more news.

 

Before I forget, here is something for the guy who, weeks ago in this forum, dare to compare Austria/Switzerland EURO 2008 with Venezuela's Copa America. Please, note that for a tournament with sixteen participants they are using only eight venues. I hope this helps some people to understand how mad and wasteful of resources is the concept of Copa America in nine venues.

Stadiums taking shape for 2008

With a year to go until the UEFA EURO 2008™ finals kick off, all eight stadiums are almost ready for action with construction work scheduled to be finished in plenty of time.

Euro 2008 SA board chairman Friedrich Stickler said: "Everything is going to plan. The last work on stadiums in Zurich and Klagenfurt should finish in August, the Letzigrund Stadium will be inaugurated on 7 September with an athletics meeting and on the same day the Klagenfurt Stadium opens its doors to the public for the friendly match between Austria and Japan." euro2008.com gives a city-by-city update on all eight venues:

Vienna, Ernst-Happel-Stadion (50,000)
The venue for the UEFA EURO 2008™ final, the media section is being renovated, a portion of which will only be set up from the quarter-finals stage to allow an extra 850 spectators to watch group matches. The extension of the stand will be completed at the start of 2008 and used for the first time for Austria's friendlies against Germany (6 February) and the Netherlands (26 March). Outside the stadium, a temporary media facility is planned, spread out over 2,600 square metres on two levels.

Klagenfurt, Wörthersee Stadion (30,000)
The old stadium was dismantled and construction work on the new one began in February 2006. Work will be finished at the end of August with the first official match, a friendly between Austria and Japan, scheduled for 7 September. Other infrastructure (media centre, corporate hospitality area, volunteers centre) will be completed in spring 2008. Salzburg, Stadion Salzburg Wals-Siezenheim (30,000)
Expansion work commenced in May last year, with the roof raised by ten metres. Work is on schedule for completion in July, with the first match planned for 25 July. A temporary media centre next to the stadium will be completed next spring.

Innsbruck, Stadion Tivoli NEU (30,000)
The roof will be raised in three stages to raise capacity to 30,000. Work is expected to finish by September and on 17 October Austria face Ivory Coast in the first match at the venue. A temporary structure built to house the media will be completed in the spring.

Zurich, Letzigrund Stadion (30,000)
Set to be inaugurated on 7 September with the renowned Weltklasse athletics meeting. There is not yet a firm date for the first football match but it will likely be scheduled for the end of September, a few weeks before the first international between the UEFA EURO 2008™ co-hosts. Further expansion will be carried out in early 2008, to raise the stadium’s capacity to 30,000. The progress can be viewed at: www.letzigrund.info.

Basle, St. Jakob-Park (40,000)
Initial enlargement work for the venue, which hosts the UEFA EURO 2008™ opener, was completed last autumn. On 15 November, 39,000 spectators watched a friendly between Switzerland and Brazil and on 2 June it saw another game, this time against Argentina. The construction work on the adjacent buildings, including a new entrance platform for spectators, is continuing. It should be completed by the start of 2008.

Berne, Stade de Suisse Wankdorf (30,000)
Inaugurated in August 2005 the stadium in Berne has hosted numerous internationals, UEFA Champions League matches as well as concerts by Robbie Williams and Bon Jovi.

Geneva, Stade de Genève (30,000)
Opened in 2003 and has hosted games between Switzerland and Italy, as well as England and Argentina. Improvement work will be carried out in the next few months, including the building of a temporary facility for the media directly next to the stadium.

How difficult can it be to put asphalt on the ground compared to building this stadium?
Besides, this stadium is not new, so it already had a parking lot.
I guess they'll just have to make it bigger.

BTW, the game is going to be played inside, not outside the stadium.

Anzoátegui sede para cuartos

La Confederación Suramericana de Fútbol hizo oficial que la sede de Puerto La Cruz recibirá el partido de cuartos de final que se le quitó a Barinas, y cuyo anuncio fue hecho el viernes pasado, luego de la última inspección de la Conmebol realizada por Eugenio Figueredo, vicepresidente del organismo.

La decisión fue tomada luego del último informe presentado al Comité Ejecutivo de la Conmebol, pero el cambio fue notificado antes de lo previsto, pues antes de partir, Figueredo informó que el viernes 15 se realizaría la samblea para acordar el nuevo destino del choque pautado para el 7 de julio y que enfrentará a las selecciones que clasifiquen como mejor tercero y segundo del Grupo B donde están Brasil, México, Ecuador y Chile.

La razón expuesta por la Conmebol para cambiar el partido de sede se basa en que el aforo del estadio La Carolina de Barinas es insuficiente para albergar un juego de esta fase.

En principio el proyecto de reforma del estadio contemplaba una capacidad de 27 mil espectadores y luego quedó en 22.700 al no poder culminar la tribuna popular, ubicada detrás de una de las porterías, debido a los retrasos en los trabajos de construcción de las tribunas.

Cuando la Conmebol anunció el calendario inicialmente Barinas sólo tenía programado el partido de la ronda eliminatoria, y el de cuartos de final iba a escenificarse en Maracaibo. Posteriormente ante la petición del propio Comité Organizador se accedió a reprogramarlo.

De esta manera, Barinas recibirá únicamente el choque de primera fase entre Estados Unidos-Paraguay, el dos de julio. Mientras que el estadio José Antonio Anzoátegui de Puerto La Cruz albergará la doble jornada del 4 de julio de Brasil-Ecuador y México-Chile, más el encuentro de cuartos de final. MJRP
