Who do you guys consider your best current player?

From an English point of view, I think Landon Donovan is excellent. I'd like to see him play for a club over here, as from what I've seen of him play, he looks very impressive.

because I haven't seen Landon play at length in a high level period of time, and I know that O'Brien brougt it when he was playing Champion's League

I say a tie between JOB and Donovan.

If Landon can prove he can play this well, or better in one of the Big 4 leagues, he becomes far and away our best player. And thats a when not an if

I have to agree. If you have Fergie's ear, have him drop an 8 figure transfer bid on this guy. He's the real deal.

Seriously? Donovan, probably. Keepers don't really count for such discussions. I like O'Brien a lot, but am not quite as enamored of him as others.

I would agree that Donovan or Mathis are the most spectacular players at the moment....however, the player with the more growing potential is Beasley. If somebody can get him built, while keeping his speed and improving his skill, he will be the best....IMO

Beasley needs to learn how to consistently make good crosses into the box before he can be considered our best player. Right now, it's Donovan without question.

I think there is a tie between O'Brien and Donovan. I would really like to see O'Brien play more midfield in Europe since I think he is better there but sadly that won't happen soon. Donovan has proved through international play that he is top notch. I won't even get into the fact that he is the top MLS player since that doesn't really relfect on how good you are internationally, but Donovan has performed well for the USMNT.

Well that goes without saying. We're talking about mere humans here. Including demi-gods, obviously Freddy tops the list.

Oh mortals, thanks. Well in that case, currently Friedel is playing the best but for field players (yes I know the keeper is also on the field) O'Brien then Reyna then when he learns to finish better, Donovan. Landon could be on top soon and there are others with that potential down the road a bit including Convey. Not for a while though.
We have some fine defensive players who might also deserve mention but I won't. [IMG]

He has performed well internationally. But he only has 5 games were it counted. And he played well the majority of the time. This is why I want to see him play around 50 games with a major European Club. League, Cup, and European Championship.

It's not Donovan without question. He is always great with the US, but not as good with SJ. He's not on my top five players in MLS right now. He's scored, what, two goals? And had three assists? Brad Friedel is probably the best.

I believe it was Kahn who was selected as best player in WC02. He made one mistake and it cost Germany dearly. If that doesn't count, than I don't know what does.

It doesn't count because when people usually ask the question (as above) they generally aren't looking for a keeper as an answer.

Wait a minute. Donovan's only got 2 goals and 3 assists for the first place team after 6 games???

Only Preki has a better G/A per game avg.

too lazy to look up minutes.

Brian McBride. He has to deserve at least a mention. Sure Donnovan has potential to be great, but right now McBride is our best player.

    agree with McBride

While Landon is the eternal 'next,' Brian has already shown what Americans can do accross the pond.

Tony Sanneh has been our best performing player for the national team the last two years. Although I don't think he gets his due and gets discriminated against overseas like many of the U.S. players (excluding keepers). He should and can do far better than Nuremburg. Donovan and Beasley have to be the runners up. If Ray Parlour can start in midfield for Arsenal, I think Landon should be able to as well, if he wants to and all things are fair. Beasley is getting better all the time by improving his shooting and now becoming a scoring threat besides just breaking down defenses with his speed. He could start for a top flite club in England as well. O'Brien is good, but he has an inflated perception because he is the only U.S. player to be playing with a big name club in Ajax. He has been allowed his chance to shine because the Dutch have always had a progressive attitude on a lot of issues (i.e.- blacks, weed, Americans).

On a related note, our trio of Friedel, Keller, and Howard is one of the best in the world.

I vote Mathis, even though he does get criticized a lot.

I would have to say before his injury, Claudio possessed the most quality. His ability to play at both the midfield and right back positions to such a high level in such a huge spotlight as the games against Mexico and Germany gives him the nod.

Currently though I'd have to go with the majority and say Donovan.

Just to be different, I'm gonna say Eddie Pope. Can you imagine our backline in a big game without him? Neither can I.

Man you scooped my thought before I could edit my response. Donovan can be electrifying at times, but Eddie Pope is just so extraordinarily solid back there. I'm not sure why he isn't in Europe, but you NY/NJ fans better appreciate the man in the middle of your D.

Best and only US player I can think of as world class is Brad Friedel.

This is the guy that prevented South Korea from a 3-1 to 4-1 thrashing of the US squad during the WC.

    He's a shot stopping mechanism.
