good header, but right at Quintero. Crossing is atrocious. Most crosses and corners are either to nobody imparticular or right into a cluster of defenders...plenty to work on during training. They just need to get used to playing with each other and get their chemistry together

    end of game 2-0 silverbacks.

Carolina thuroughly outplayed tonight minus the final 15 minutes of the game. When we had our breaks our shots were either off net, or they were just not good enough to beat Quintero. Players were probably a little fatigued from last night, but our play was sloppy all around.

Main thing is the attack, we need to seriously work on that. one goal in four games is unacceptable:(

    What a disappointing night.

This was my first time using USL live, and, in all honesty, it was terrible. Where do you get a commentator who repeatedly calls the home team the "Silverhawks?" He repeatedly got details of the teams and the season wrong, even after being corrected by his less entertaining partner... On top of that, I think I only really got to see about 2/3 of the game, as we repeatedly lost our feed for lengthy periods of time...

I'm going to try and watch it again later, so that I can have a little better judgement of the team's performance. My impressions from what I did see were that they looked a shadow of the team that played last night. They looked fine up until the pk, but after that they seemed to completely lose the plot. The fluid passing was gone, everything seemed like urgency without purpose. They were lucky not to conced a second goal in the first half after Stokes's terrible back pass.

All night long, the use of dead ball opportunities was terrible. So many wasted corner kicks and free kicks, even the throw-ins were often poor.

The second half substitutions didn't seem to pay off. I was a little amazed when the fourth sub came on - I had no idea that the USL allowed more than three subs! I looked on their site and couldn't find the rule - can anyone point me in the direction of the actual substitution rules for USL-1?

The team looked so great last night, and looked like they were taking big steps forward. I wondered if we would see the same team on the field tonight, for consistency, or if we would see some new players starting, to have somewhat fresher legs... It was the same names out there, but they didn't look like the same players. I wonder how they'll look against Chivas after two days of relative rest...

    Hopefully, much better.

One last thing, on the call for strikers... I think that is one position they are pretty full at. Honestly, there are a number of proven goal scorers on the team, and, hopefully, they just need time to settle in and find each other, and, subsequently, the net. The team certainly can't sign any more, when they have six on the roster already. With a little luck, it will come together soon.

i hope you are right about the strikers. They looked great on Friday, Edozien had 8 shots alone!! Im thinking its just a chemistry thing. I sincerely hope they find each other soon....this makes for 372 minutes of goal less play for the railhawks...:(

Strikers- score goals- make things happen! We have NO PROVEN GOAL SCORERS ON THE FIELD! Connelly is gased after 30 minutes- that position is not filled and someone better step up because we are not going to be able to depend on our defense the whole time- teams at this level will analize and pick apart our defense like they did tonight- going after the weaker players in the back line.

Has to get better and fast

Chris Carrieri is the best American born striker, ever.

Just ask him, he'll tell you.

Yes it was terrible, I echo all of those sentiments about the commentator. Regarding the loss of feed I was going to blame that on the power outages they were mentioning during the match as I've had no problem with the first few weeks of broadcasts (I've watched them all and had no problems). However the same thing has happened with tonights Portland-Seattle game so I'm blaming USL live. This just sucks. Paying to watch games that are going blank is a rip off.

    Carrieri is a midfielder..??

i just want to see some gooooooallllsssss:( man it was a little funny at first but 372 minutes without a goal is really waring on me!:(

i was also getting sick of the atlanta commentators. blatantly biased and would basically repremand our players for complaining when the ref failed to call OBVIOUS fouls. they would say things like "well he needs to just be quiet and play some soccer instead of complaining so much". meanwhile one of the guys is calling us the SilverHawks. That one guy sounded like he didnt even like soccer, or know ANYTHING about it. He kept saying 'penalty-kick' for any free kick. it sounded like he was the guy who wanted to be an american football anouncer but got stuck with soccer!!!

Ha! Remember when he was going to set the MLS on fire? I think he was even quoted as saying he would become the all-time leading goal scorer in MLS. :p

That said, I thought he had one of his best games at midfield against the Islanders. Maybe losing some of that hair has improved his game. The anti-Sampson, if you will.

Me too! I was sitting right behind the bench when Scotty handed Santiago a player pass and I was like WTF? Come to find out you get 5 subs in USL.

    Who knew?

Funny story of the night (yes, there's always a bright side).

After the match, I'm hanging out with the guys as they are waiting on the bus to pick them up. The team is filing out of the makeshift locker rooms (neh, trailers) and Dario is carrying the water bucket. I said, "Hey, don't you rate a little more status on this team that that? Isn't there a rookie that carry the water bucket?" Without missing a beat, Brose says "If I were ten years younger, they wouldn't have let me empty it first."

    :)

So, my comment about "proven goal scorers" was honestly based on my feelings that the Railhawks have an experienced GM and a pretty hard-nosed coach, and I wouldn't think they'd bring people in to play forward if they didn't think they could find the back of the net.

If my memory, and my interpretation of the game formations, is correct, I think we've played 7 or 8 players in (or perhaps around) the forward position. I poked around and tried to find some information, looking at their careers prior to joining the Railhawks.

Starters for each game have been Connally Edozien and McColm Cephas. I oddly couldn't find a whole lot about Connally as far as stats go. He was a successful college player, and has been a pro for several years, playing abroad, in MLS, and in the USL. The only hard stats I found were that he played 9 games for the New England Revolution and scored one goal. Cephas seems to have been a pro for over four years, with 70 professional appearances and 19 goals. Not amazing, but not terrible.

In the first game, Kevin Jeffrey and Joey Worthen subbed in. The information I found for Jeffrey was: 7+ years as a pro, 170 appearances, 61 goals. Not bad at all, as far as stats go. For some reason, we haven't seen him since. Worthen is listed as a midfielder. He seems to have scored 8 goals in 90 appearances as a pro. He didn't look very comfortable in this game, playing toward the middle/front, and has looked much better in subsequent games playing wide.

For the second game, Johnny Steele came on for Cephas, which honestly seemed to confuse things a little. This was somewhat like what happened when Worthen came on the week before - people confused about where they were playing/what to do. To his credit, Steele seems like our best corner kick taker. Mark Jonas made a cameo appearance at the end of the game. I wasn't able to find much statistical info on either of them. However, they are both listed as midfielders on the club roster. Jonas was clearly playing up front, though.

In the third and fourth game, the subs for the forward positions were Anthony Maher and David Sartorio (who is listed as Phillip Long in the box score?) Maher has been a pro for over five years. Wikipedia had no appearance stats prior to his last two teams, for which he had 14 goals in 26 appearances. He looked somewhat dangerous. Sartorio is listed as a mid. I can't say that I saw him do much, but, in part, that's also due to USL live blanking most of his 45 minutes on my screen...

It's worth noting that Chris Carrieri has a background as a forward, and had scored 34 goals in 154 professional appearances prior to joining the Railhawks. The team seems pretty committed to playing him wide on the right, though.

So, the team has a pretty full roster, with four or five guys who I would say are proven forwards. However, they're not always playing wih two recognized forwards on the pitch. I do think it will take more time to gel. Friday was definitely promising.

BTW, the information I found was mostly from quick internet searches ending at wikipedia... if anyone has information to add, I'd love to see it.

A little personal opinion here (not that it matters - the coaches are certainly competent and see much more of the players than I do) - I think Connally has been the most dangerous forward, but the offense hasn't been linking up. When we do seem to have two forwards on the field, they play pretty far apart. I'd like to see them a little closer - to fascilitate quicker interplay when we do penetrate the defense. Also, I'd like to see a bit more of Kevin Jeffrey.

I know exactly how ya feel. The guy with the strong southern accent didnt seem to know very much about the game or the USL IMHO. I paid the 10 bucs for the whole month and I hope that last night's game as not indicative of the USL Live broadcasts. Do the silverbacks get much support in ATL? Seemed like a small crowd

FYI, in regards to the treefire's point about Sartorio v. Long, it was Philip Long that played for the 'Hawks both Friday and Saturday, wearing the number 19, instead of his actual squad number (which I believe will be 13) due to a "wardrobe malfunction" :)

Disappointingly small IMHO for a Saturday evening. The announced attendance was around 1,977 IIRC. My guess is that there were about 1,000 that actually made it through the gates. The stadium is supposed to seat 4K and there is no way half the seats were occupied.

when the Railhawks broadcast was giving me trouble, I switched to the Miami FC game........their stadium looked totally deserted. ATL at least had some folks in the stadium.....Miami was pathetic.

Yeah, I was telling the guy I was with about him. :D And the generally dreadful careers of #1 picks.

But I'll tell ya, Carrieri looked very dangerous wide right the last 20 minutes. As for the finishing, look, Friday night, their keeper was MOTM, hands down. And he had, IIRC, two goalline clearances from field players. It was just one of those nights.

Nice report Jarrett. Good to hear that we are above the league norm for support. Hopefully it'll last beyond the end of the novelty honeymoon.
