I wouldn't either, but this 13,000 something crowd looked much bigger than the announced 13,782 at the freezing opener.
Another person hundreds of miles away watching the game on ESPN tells us how it is.... As someone who was actually in the stadium, I thought the crowd was decent-sized for a weekday game and it EASILY surpassed 6,950 (roughly half of the announced total) fans in the stadium. Enough with the hyperbole. Of course, what else is bigsoccer good for?
I thought it looked like a nice crowd and figured the majority of fans were sitting on the camera side anyway (or off getting buck a brats).
I drove six hours with some friends round trip to the game. I lost my voice and I'm so tired. For once I would just like to go home without hearing columbus attendance smack. I don't know what side they taped on this time but the one side was completely full in the bottom half that I was on. The side that was always full last year wasn't that full. It seemed like they switched the sides from last year where the majority of the people sit on in columbus and did espn switch also to the other side? I figured 14 k in my honest opinion from where I was standing. But everyone else is resident experts on Crew attendance so I will shut up. Yeah there were really 2,000 people there. Never live a day without hearing this shit. I wish all of you would go die in a fire. 24 k seats 13 k in stadium. That's 11,000 empty yellow seats which show up good on television. I don't know what to tell you. But continue to beat us until were dead. There were 12-13 k there, I would bet my life on it. But that wouldn't even be good enough for half of these assholes who have never even been to a MLS game.
Honestly I got home, turned on the DVR and I was absolutly shocked that attendance looked that bad on TV. I actually looked over during the game and thought people on BS are going to like this because the TV side(East Side) looked pretty populated, even though the West side was a little sparce. Then I got home, turned on the recording and it was like, where did all the people go?
I was sitting right there in 105, and the section seemed packed, but every now and then I'd glance up at the big screen and on some of the shots where you could see the stands it just didn't look that crowded. It's really a little frustrating that the Crew FO made an obvious effort to put more fans on the east side of the stadium for once, but it still didn't look that great on tv. The only time those yellow benches look good is when it's a 100% sellout.
Dude, watch the highlights on MLSNet.com The balcony is over half empty. The sidelines had a ton of empty seats. The endzones were VERY sparse There is no way in hell that that stadium had butts in over half of the available seats, no way at all...
Only caaught a glimps on TV and did see a lot of empty seats...which does't mean a lot. Being from Philly have gone to a ton of Phils games (we're the team to beat...just ask Jimmy Rollins) and have seen a half empty Citizen's bank park have announced attendance of 40k...probably more true than not, always a large part of the crowd constantly in the concessions and walking around, the same on a cold April night in Columbus??? I hope all weeknight games get the same percentage as CLB did last night, 13k on 24k seating. Weather looks good this weekend, any predictions on week 3 attendance?
Actually, they would. Looking left and right while standing in a stadium, it always looks like there are far more people there then a straight shot looking at the entire seating area from a distance on camera. Is it easier to count a crowd at a parade from above or while standing in the middle of it? Of course, that does not account for the thousands hanging out in the concourses that only people at the stadium can see. So TV viewers definitely miss those people, and those in the restrooms and those hanging out in their cars...
I don't know why hostility from the crews fans. We all want the best for crews and by extension mls. I watched the whole game and and it was entertaining. But the stadium did look disappointing from my perspective which was the camera's perspective. The crowd looked sparse. May be next time they will point the camera at the full side so it looks good on tv.
Frankly, the most important thing for these Thursday games is not the number, but how it looks on tv and the atmosphere create. Some of you are either new to MLS or you have forgotten the early days. Somewhere around 97 or 98 they tried to do a regular week night game if I remember correctly, and it was a disaster. Sections that were empty in prime spots with a couple of people sitting in a row here and there. Then you would hear an air horn echoing around the empty stadium and it looked absolutely horrible. I forgot this game was on. So I didn't turn it on until the 60th minute. For an MLS weeknight, I thought it looked great. Sure, it would be nice to see a packed house but this was a nice tv crowd. Columbus has neve been what I would call boisterous (unless us Fire fans are there making some noise ), but I also thought the crowd behind the goal did a decent job. I was skeptical when ESPN announced these weeknight games, but at least for the first two weeks they have created a decent tv image.
yeah I bet. That probably includes moving us to St. Louis. I agree with the other people in the stands from where I was sitting it looked packed on our side but when I got home I was like wth? But hey what's new.
It's Columbus, it was a Thursday night, and it's April. Seriously, what the hell were all you smack talkers expecting anyways? It's obvious it wasn't going to sellout, it's obvious there weren't going to be 20,000+ fans. Any number below that and you are going to see empty seats, big deal. There are way more important things in life to worry about what some team in a city you don't even live in averages for attendance.
I thought it was common knowledge that often in Columbus you will see a significant number of fans standing along the railing above the seats. Often times that is the best view of the game. Just because someone isn't in their seat doesn't mean they aren't in the stadium.
once again, you did not see at ANY point in the broadcast the side of the stadium from which the camera was filming. Maybe that's where all the fans were.
I don't see what all the complaining is about almost 14k for a weekday game is actually good. Nobody draws well during the week. LA last year was announcing 17-18k during weeknights. The only weeknight games that will have full stadiums is when Beckham plays. Anyone expecting anything else is going to be very disappointed.
