Really, that's some serous love there. Don't worry we have been a bit of a cursed team lately but we'll do our best take good care of him.
More back on topic, why are people taking this $2 million figure so seriously? I've yet to see a reliable source verify that number. If someone has, please point it out. If/when the signing becomes official, Goff or one of the connected American reporters will hear the accurate number, until then we should take the 2 million number with a grain of salt.
What he said. I've played with that number just for demonstration purpuses, but salary numbers that come out of foreign sporting papaers are about as reliable as Central Ohio weather.
The last 6 pages of this thread are such a serious mess that I'm tempted to nuke all of it. england66 has had his say - which is fine - and unless he has anything new to add, I'd suggest we all just leave it alone. The Boca-River flamewar appears to have died down on it's own. If this stuff comes back, I'll be closing this thread for renovations, and we'll reopen with a leaner and meaner thread.
Obviously when RedBull said their marketing this year was focused on the grassroots campaign, they weren't lying. This is how they cover the metropolitan new york demographic they're seeking w/ just a few diverse players.
I searched "Crew" and "Guillermo" this morn' and got this article. Just read the headline: AP article
Nothing we didn't alreaady know really deals not done probably won't know till next week. http://www.dispatch.com/dispatch/co...04/12/crew12.ART_ART_04-12-07_E5_PR6C2UO.html
OMG! I saw the headline pop-up in my new tab when I clicked on the link and my heart jumped. You are a mean mean mean mean man. Funny though.
Basically, the article is about a crew abandoning it's ship. The ship was argentinian, and it is an icebreaker. The headline was "Crew Abandons Argentine Icebreaker". Don't worry, it's nothing on Guille!
Here's the headline from yesterday in Argentina. www.infobae.com (You have to search for it...try Guillermo) Confirmado: Guillermo Barros Schelotto se va de Boca or en ingles: Confirmed: GBS to leave Boca
I forgot to include this link, where I found the lead to the spanish story. http://www.goal.com/en-us/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=277863 Here's the lead: “The Big Will” Is Part Of The CrewAccording to reports coming out of Buenos Aires, Boca Juniors idol Guillermo Barros Schelotto has accepted the offer he had on the table by MLS club Columbus Crew. The club’s US$2 million offer appears to have satisfied the player and will be heading north very soon. Argentine daily InfoBAE reports that the player has already obtained a visa and work permit to the US and that this weekend will be his swansong.
http://www.infobae.com/notas/nota.php?IdxSeccion=1&Idx=310566 Another interesting link. It's a profile of the icebreakers new team.
Except all the Boca fans that have never heard of MLS before or seen a game up here are all wondering "Hey, why is everybody sitting around looking bored?"
Can you imagine having to explain where the nickname came from? He's collected more nicknames than Mathis has chins - we have lots to pick from.
3 more links for those of you that can read Spanish. They are from La Nacion, the NY Times of Argentina. I'll give a brief summary of each. if anyone wonders about specific sentences or phrases from the articles, just post them here and I or someone else can translate. http://www.lanacion.com.ar/deportiva/nota.asp?nota_id=899264&origen=acumulado&acumulado_id=131-10 This one mostly points out the differences in the way MSL works and the way most of the other leagues around the world work (the single entity, for example). It also mentions that soccer is not as popular here as the other major sports. It also talks about the lack of history in the league but that it is growing. There are several quotes from Cristian Gomez. http://www.lanacion.com.ar/deportiva/nota.asp?nota_id=899266&origen=acumulado&acumulado_id=131-10 This one gives some brief details about pro soccer in the US, the Crew, and Argentineans playing here now and in the past. http://www.lanacion.com.ar/deportiva/nota.asp?nota_id=899265&origen=acumulado&acumulado_id=131-10 This one is a short interview with Cristian Gomez about the league. He would love to play against Guillermo on the 28th. He thinks the style Guillermo brings from Argentina along with his experience will bring success and make a difference. He also mentions the crowds, including the average attendance and the cheering sections. In DC 2 of the supporters clubs are formed by latinos, but he says there aren't latinos in Ohio.
