It's a choice this kid made when he decided he wanted to play professional soccer.

There are over 100 kids making that developmental salary in MLS and finding a way to make it work.

Thing is they all have bigger hearts and bigger balls than little Teddy who has decided to run home and have his mom call up Ives to ask him to write the sob story.

    It's pathetic.

Seriously, this guy can't at least go play in Rochester or Virginia Beach or something along those lines? He's got to stick at home, hang out with his college buddies, and wish on a star that he was making bank?

This kid sounds like he needs a reality check. He'd have been in a better position to take the contract with Columbus, wait until the contract is guaranteed, and then demand a move to NY for whatever the Crew could get for him.

I don't see it as the Crew holding this guy for randsome. NY isn't about to offer him any more money, just that he'll be closer to home. He could just as easily go play in USL or find a job in another country. The article talked about him getting a Polish passport to make it easier for him to get on a team over there. I guess it's tough to get into a Div 3 Swedish team. There are US players that go over to Sweden, Denmark, Norway, etc. and haven't seemed to have work permit issues before... and it's not like these are on the talent level of kids that should be playing in the Serie A or Prem.

    Here's the basic fact:
    - The kid isn't THAT talented.
    - He was probably a project that could have ended up being somebody who was serviceable and maybe versatile enough to fill a couple different needs in a pinch.

If the kids going to be homesick all the time, who the hell wants that on a travel team? Grow the hell up. I moved to a town w/ no friends or family, and I'm managing to make it ok.

What does this kid eat? White truffle and gold leaf sandwiches?

There are loads of kids doing this in the MLS, what makes this guy special?

The DP players get more money than that, that's just their "contract" amount. The DP players are the ones that head to camps on behalf of the team, make appearances on behalf of the team -- all while getting paid money to do so in order to make their bottom line better.

Reserve player salaries should be increased at least $7,000 a piece across the board. This would cost MLS $50-60k per team per season, since the GAs wouldn't need to get the raise. I don't see how MLS can have $50 million DPs and expect rookies to move to distance cities for $12,900 a year and then be forced to compete with more experienced players who are paid full-time wages.

You know, they offered the price. He said no. There are what 10 Dev. player spots on every roster, and let's just say 5 of them are GA players for arguments sake. That's still 5 players per team (65 players in the league) that have moved to another state with no friends/family and live off of it. No one says it's easy but if you want to play pro soccer and no foreign leagues are offering you anything, you do what it takes for a year or two to live your dream.

As to raising the offer. Take that up with the Union. They're the ones who negotiatied the DP players salary ranges. Wah wah, cry me a river.

We're offering him the same exact contract NYRB are offering him. The Crew isn't messing with this kid's career/livlihood, they're offering him one. His trusted advisors told him not to take it.

And what's so hard to understand about this kid not being able to live off that much away from home? How about Aaron Chandler is from California and he does it, Gruenebaum(our opening day starter) is from Kansas and he does it, Moss is from New Mexico, he does it. On New York Red Bulls dev roster they have Sinisa Ubiparipovic from Mentor OH that seems to be able to pull it off, they have Blake Camp from Georgia that seems to be able to pull it off. Run down a list of any MLS team and they have a whole lot of Developmental players that didn't grow up in the area that seem to be able to live off that much away from home.

I did. So did a lot of us. We went to college and lived on less than that (even when adjusted for inflation), and some piled up enormous debts that took years to pay off.

Yeah, Ives seems to lack any self consciousness. Sort of like he's the Michael Gary Scott of New Jersey journalism.

This sort of post is what mainstream journalists point to when they say blogs need editing. I disagree as a general matter but you'd think Ives would let someone soundcheck it for him.

You mean a kid from Ohio can go to NY/NJ and afford to live on the same salary this kid is turning down to live in Columbus. Hmmm...and if his soccer career is so important, why can't mommy and daddy help pay his bills? ...oh boy

Oh yeah, it's for school! Last I checked they had this little state school in Columbus that as a resident is likely cheaper than Seton Hall is.

    What a baby

A good point, to a degree and one for which I have small amount of sympathy.

Problem is we don't have a roster spot. And you won't get very far trying for sympathy with these rascals.:D

There should be a league tribunal for these situations.

I mean, who wins? Not the kid becasue he can't play. Not the Bulls because they don't get him. Not us either because the only thing we get is the satisfaction of knowing the bulls haven't got him.

I don't think US soccer can afford to be in this kind of situation yet.

Whoa, there. It is nobody's fault but the kid's himself. He entered the draft knowing he could go anywhere and would likely only get a dev. salary. What Fid says bears repeating about their salary not being their only income.

Honest question. How many of their own draft picks did the RedBulls sign?

    Classic!

I'm just trying to decide who here has a greater sense of entitlement: the kid, the Red Bulls, or this Galarcep guy.

Galarcep. The jackass that keeps on braying.

The Columbus Crew "are at it again"? No, douche, more like YOU are "at it again".

You can tell when he goes into "I'm just making it up" mode when he begins any sentence with "apparently....". That is Ives-speak for "I'm lying"

Nobody is holding a gun to these kid's heads. If they can't live on what they can make as a soccer player then they need to find another line of work.

I speak from experience here: I have a similar problem in that I simply cannot seem to make enough money to pay my bills while being a beachcomber. So I just had to put on long pants and abandon my dream.

HWF has a great idea! We'll just keep drafting this whinyassed loser until he's 40.

I bet no one in the RBFO, really cares if they get this kid of not, thus the lowball offers.

I didnt move to another state, but I also wasnt running home every week for food or money and I lived on my own in columbus on 10,000 last year. Thats for 12 months, this kid's contract is for what? The season? at the most say he's with the team for 9 months. That gives him 3 months of no soccer so he can work to build up a little money. Get a life kid, Id take 12,000 a year to play soccer in Salt Lake City!!!!

I agree. I say we spend our first round on him next year.
